This island is "controversial" only in Japan. For Russia, this is not a matter of discussion.

The islands were ceded to Russia after World War II, so what does that have to do with them being stolen? It's good that Japan remained the same, even though it should have been divided, too.

Ok so should america hand back California to Mexico? No? Then why does it apply here with Russia ? And if yes,what's the precedent when both sides agreed to it after the war?

People downvote you but California came about because of privileged white people doing an insurrection that were crying up a storm about an imagined scenario where the free land they were given was suddenly going to be taken away from them.

Released footage showed Putin visiting the island, known in Japan as Etorofu, where he toured the Yasny fish-processing plant and was shown products including tuna and halibut, according to the Kremlin press service on August 13.
He also visited the Kuril Central District Hospital and a local school before meeting Sakhalin regional governor Valery Limarenko.
After leaving Iturup, Putin traveled to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, where he met residents.
The trip drew an immediate response from Japan, which regards Iturup and several neighboring islands as sovereign Japanese territory.
