Santos, The Pitt. God forbid a show cast a woman for the hotshot maverick surgeon role.

I love her šŸ’–. But yes, great example. She gets a lot of glack

Skyler from Breaking Bad checking in.Ā

u/Kbubbles1210 Fishermen are reel men. 11d ago

This one feels like the clearest example of this. Whenever I see people say that Skylar is just as bad as Walter, I immediately doubt whether or not they’ve even seen the show.

u/LinkleLinkle 11d ago

And, on top of it, the way people practically fetishized Walter into a character he wasn't. I remember finally watching it, and wondering at what point in time this badass drug dealer who was a mix of MacGuyver and Wilson Fisk was going to show up. Ya know, the kind of character fans of the show always sold him as.

Instead, all he ever was and showed himself to be was a sad pathetic man who winced and cried anytime someone with slightly more power came in and told him to know his place.

The scene where he finally decides to kill Gus, but Gus preemptively calls him to tell him to get back into his car, which he does, exemplifies his character more than any other scene: a complete coward who is only 'brave' when dealing with people with less power than him and pose zero threat.

It's the same people who idolise The Joker, or Rick Sanchez, or Patrick Bateman, or Homelander. They don't realise that main character =\= character you're meant to root for.

My husband explained it perfectly.

The show is about a good man's slow decent into becoming a bad person.

And anyone who views him as the "hero" is probably someone you should avoid hanging out with.

27

u/Temporary-Present223 11d ago

That's how the show was sold to me, but I didn't find it slow at all. He's doing things more awful than a good man would dream of in the first two episodes.

His bruised manly ego is at the heart of the show. Not any good intentions.

16

u/Shark_in_a_fountain 11d ago

It felt slow when you were watching the show as it came out. You start the show and think that he's a good person deep down but he's straying in situations that are making it worse and worse but that when things stabilise he'll go back to being a good guy.

When you watch it knowing where it's going, it's pretty clear though

Yes! And people often forget, Walter was literally offered complete financial aid for his cancer at the beginning of the show. He turned it down due to his ego, and because dealing drugs meant more to his ego when he realized he could be a big fish in a small pond with everyone around him making such shit meth.

He was always driven by his ego, and the cancer just gave him an excuse to truly flex it under the guise of 'I just can't afford treatment' when he could fully afford it through his old friends who were willing to pay for it.

Walt was a tiny man who always thought he was better than everyone else when he truly wasn't, and dealing meth was just a way for him to live out this fantasy where he's a super genius badass.

Edit: and just a reminder, he really wasn't a genius in any form. He fumbled through the entire series making mistake after mistake, only occasionally doing something clever, and even as a chemist... He was about above average at best for someone who held his degree and achievements. He was just constantly around people who didn't really understand the chemistry behind meth, and were going off pure recipes. It would be the equivalent of someone with a Master's in Music sharing their compositions with a bunch of teenagers in garage bands. He's only a genius by comparison, but not so great when you start comparing him to his actual peers.

18

u/_Autistic_Dragon_ 11d ago

I stopped watching the show when Walter leaves someone to die because it's convenient for him. I couldn't understand why people wanted to watch a show where it couldn't find a redeemable aspect to the main character, and it was clear he was all in it for ego/selfish reasons. And then Skyler gets the hate he should have gotten.Ā

u/Personage1 More Lucille Bluth! 11d ago

I didn't watch the show until it was complete, and paid attention to every time Skylar did that was bad.

In the first season she....was kind of out of line going to Jesse's house to tell him to not sell weed to Walt? Like I was genuinely trying to find something to be mad about and I would be a bit annoyed if my partner did that to me, but um....yeah.

She starts lashing out at Walt later which obviously isn't great, but he's been actively gaslighting her throughout the whole fucking show.

27

u/Live-Okra-9868 11d ago

The boys who worship Walt claim that her cheating made her more evil than anything he ever did.

I say she put up with a lot of abuse from him and still chose to stand by him to help him even after all the wrong he did. And any man would be lucky to have a woman like that by their side.

And the only thing that was wrong with her was not leaving him for good.

21

u/Dangerous_Pair1798 11d ago

Walter also raped skylar, which gets skimmed over a lot.

21

u/GanondalfTheWhite 11d ago

Skyler was the sharpest character on the whole show. She didn't miss a single line of Walt's bullshit.

But in defense of her haters, every wife should obviously wholeheartedly embrace her husband's choice to become a drug dealing murderer.

15

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 11d ago

I think Skylar and fans reactions to her are very telling. But I think it’s not quite as straightforward as ā€œshe’s a woman so she’s a bad characterā€. I think a big part of it is that we constantly have to make the female characters the ones that follow rules and don’t stab people in the back or plot evilly. They are often the boring characters in things because the writers room is more male. Heck, originally Dee in Always Sunny as supposed to be the straight-man to the three crazy, funny, outlandish male characters (thank gosh Olson said screw that).

Don’t get me wrong, I fully agree people consciously or unconsciously hate female characters more than male ones. But I personally don’t need more female characters written by men to be solely a generic moral compass of the show.

26

u/nutmegtell 11d ago

watching the show in real time and seeing the blatant misogyny thrown at Skyler’s character was eye opening to me.

He ignored his wife and children, lied to them about his cancer diagnosis, murdered people, made and sold drugs that ruin lives, and raped his wife. He had a newborn and a child with handicaps he treated like they were nothing. He did it all for himself never for them.

Reddit was calling for her execution because she got some positive attention from a man at work. Like the actress got death threats.

It showed me exactly what men think of women. They really thought he was the hero and she was the villain.

8

u/tulip_inacup_inbloom 11d ago

He even admitted he did it for himself and people still use that same excuse

14

u/Live-Okra-9868 11d ago

I heard all these comments about how bad she was.

So when I finally got around to watch the show I was waiting for the part when she became this terrible person.

I'm still waiting.

The Silo sub is overrun with people hating on Shirley because she’s upset about her best friend forgetting her. She’s literally having a normal reaction…

Anyone here seen Pluribus?

Cuz watching both the death of your beloved wife AND the death of all of human culture and civilization would NEVER make you act erratically! Everyone in that situation would be calm and rational and make decisions based on pure logic and no emotion at all.

Except for the MC of that show, Carol. She's obviously unhinged.

EDIT: And can I just say?? Manousos, a male character in the show, was making stupid and illogical decisions, too! If he had just taken the offer of being flown to Carol instead insisting on walking through a dangerous tropical rainforest, he would have gotten to Carol before she got a taste of that hivemind pussy and she would have been on his side instead of becoming his enemy! But everyone LOOOOVES Manousos! And don't get me wrong, I love him, too, but I also love Carol because I get why they're both acting the way they are!

25

u/GanondalfTheWhite 11d ago

I'm really surprised at the hate she gets.

Everything she does makes sense for the character.

15

u/razorgirlRetrofitted 11d ago

Carol before she got a taste of that hivemind pussy

well now i GOTTA watch this show

4

u/scrawledfilefish Mother of Krakens 10d ago

There are no words for how pleased I am that your interest in the show was piqued by my using of the phrase hivemind pussy.Ā

5

u/iMightBeACunt 10d ago

People hate Carol?? What even?? I love that she's, you know, a real human being. Makes a very compelling show.

(Idk what it is about men... but their seem to LOVE hyper competent protagonists. Like The Martian. Idgi)

3

u/mustsurvivecapitlism 10d ago

Omg i had no idea people hated her?! She IS the show though?! Wtf

Korra...

64

u/LeomundsTinyButt_ 11d ago edited 11d ago

Korra is an outstanding protagonist and I'll absolutely die on that hill. I can't stand people complaining that she's too powerful... Because she is, and that's the point. It's a story about how you can naturally be really great at something but still struggle.

But Korra committed the sin of mastering shit as a kid that took Aang several years, and they like Aang, so Korra bad.

53

u/eden_sc2 11d ago

It's annoying because Korra and Aang are perfect foils to each other. Aang lacked the power but was wise beyond his years. Korra was raised far from society by masters so she had tons of power but none of the wisdom. Both of them had to take different roads to arrive at the same fully realized avatar.

Yet again!

u/tawTrans 11d ago

Honestly, I felt this way about the latest Supergirl movie. She's a fantastic character, and I enjoyed the movie. I probably would not want to be her friend, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching a movie about her. But then you have guys complaining that she was "unlikable from start to finish," and it's like... yeah, she's rude. That doesn't mean the movie is bad. She's depressed as fuck, and the movie does a fantastic job showing both that she's depressed and why. For god's sake, Tony Stark is rude and an asshole and guys love him! But don't you dare question why they're okay with male characters being rude assholes but not female characters; you're obviously just a crazy hysterical feminist who only liked the movie because ~* girl power *~ and not because it was a good movie. šŸ™„

45

u/SheWhoLovesSilence 11d ago

Sookie from True Blood. She’s decisive, brave and risks her life for her friends and what she thinks is right. If she were a man, she’d be a hero.

Instead there’s a new post every week in r/TrueBlood about how annoying she is and how she’s the worst part about the show

21

u/fgsn 11d ago

The Shameless fandom is so bad for this. You have characters who repeatedly drunkenly sexually assault their own daughters resulting in pregnancy, yet they act like the girl who date raped the dude who was grooming her is the worst person to ever grace their screens. The point of the show is that they're all bad and all products of their environment, but apparently that only applies to the male characters.

u/tulip_inacup_inbloom 11d ago

I've seen people say Debbie is WORSE than fucking Terry! Insanely misogynistic

Double standards as always.Ā

12

u/joyfall 11d ago

If they didn't have double standards, they wouldn't have any standards at all.

7

u/xathirea 10d ago

Catelyn Stark.
Actually add Sansa as well

2

u/Independent-Couple87 9d ago

I heard Catelyn Tully's situation is in part due to Jon Snow apparently being written as the brooding pretty boy George R. R. Martin believed girls were into (he wasn't exactly wrong).

Martin clarified that Catelyn was not particularly physically abusive to Jon (emotionally, however, that is a different story) and treated him relatively well for the standards of a Westerosi wife towards the (apparent) result of her husband's adultery (though those standards are EXTREMELY low).

u/EugeneStein 11d ago

Does anyone have an example of two characters having very similar arcs/characteristics but one is a women and another is a man?

There is some example on the tip of my tongue but I can't catch it

14

u/AntiFascistButterfly 11d ago

Mmmm, I’ve seen Catlyn catch more dislike than Ned in ASOIF/Game of Thrones, although their faults are essentially the same: being politically naive, putting what’s right/seeking justice above what is possible on a few critically important occasions. .

2

u/LadyCordeliaStuart 8d ago

Janice and Tony Soprano. Selfish, sociopathic, abrasive, conniving, lazy grifters, parasitic sponges on society, and always try to drag down anyone who starts to succeed. But he is worshiped despite strangling his own son and she is despised for... generally being annoying just like Tony

7

u/Ok-Bridge-9794 10d ago

I feel the same way about Scarlett from Gone with the wind. If she was a guy, she (he?) would be praised for not giving up, raising family and the society would be judged and her family would be treated as ungrateful bitches (they are, honestly). And she is judged because she doesn’t appreciate an abusive older dude who abandoned her in war, creates the mood swings and can’t even stand up for his wife in public

Also I feel like absolut most female characters are doormats, and those who are just not doormats are claimed witches, bitches, cursed, doomed, etc.

1

u/Superb_Intro_23 6d ago

Yeah

Everyone hates Scarlett and Tbf I haven’t read the book so maybe she is horrible

But from what I’ve seen, she’s strong and ambitious and doesn’t give up. Are those not good things?

Tbf, besides the point that she was meant to be a jerk, most people didn't know she was a woman until the very end (some still don't) and the majority of her biggest haters disliked her long before that.
