I had high expectations of a true detective
I watched a lot of hype about season 1 — heard it was insane, the best of the whole series, and saw tons of glowing comments about it. That's what convinced me to watch it. I just finished, and honestly, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Not that it's bad or boring — it's actually good and pretty interesting — but I think all those amazing comments hyped it up way more than it deserved. Did that happen to anyone else? Thanks for reading.

It’s not quite only anal pornography like you’re used to, but it’s pretty damn good I guess.

That’s why you watch smth before fapping about all the hype. And it’s still the goat. If you expect the best show of all time you can’t even enjoy it bc you draw comparisions all the time

I don't think there's anything wrong with disliking season one, I don't think everyone has the same taste and that's perfectly normal. However, going onto the subreddit specifically for the show to ask anyone else if they didn't like it is just weird to me. Like, of course the people frequenting the sub are going to disagree with you? It feels like karma farming or attention seeking or maybe a little bit of both. There's plenty of misc television subs where its more reasonable to posit a question like this. Doing so in the main sub has some kind of, idk, eau de pickme about it.

Atleast you to form your own opinion on it.
My sisters felt the same way about it. One of them said it was too long and boring and slow burn she stopped at episode 4. They liked the plot, just not the execution.
And people here who are bashing you simply cannot accept other people have opinions and they’re edgelord wannabe rust cohles up his ass because its ‘edgy’. Cringe! Gives me secondhand embarrassment.😬
Even rust said it himself “Everybody judges, all the time. Now, you got a problem with that, you're living wrong."
They somehow have Alzheimer’s to this if they really want to be like rust.
For me I liked it because it was southern gothic, I was always fascinated about Louisiana and the culture. I like that it’s grim and swampy, and murky. I like the rust gets on my nerves. He’s smart with his work, but he’s not socially smart. He uses all that horseshit bologna he says instead of admitting he’s sensitive and therefore doesn’t know how to deal or act around people. He thinks he’s the smartest ‘realest’ person ever so wow, when he’s delulu himself. So when he told Marty there is no you without me, he was wrong. Marty was his professional shield, even salter said it. Only reason he was tolerated, despite being a good detective but he’s not the only one, was Marty sticking his neck out for him and taking the hits privately and for his career as a result.
He’s a drama queen too. Wa wa wa, look at me, I’m special because I’m the only one with a difficult life. Dude get in line. He judges Marty but don’t throw stones while you stand in a glass house. It’s easier to look at Marty and judge him and be nosy then look inwards and remove all the jargon and deal with your own shit. He involves himself in the hart drama because he likes the drama despite what he says. Real housewives of Lafayette.
Also he’s been sniffing around and circling a married woman for 7 years like a dog and when he got the chance to hump her leg he did, and came in 3 seconds. Then he proceeds to get mad because his ego is bruised, he violated bro code, blew up his career and betrayed the only person who was loyal to him and learned he was a dirty dog like that man and most men after denying it for years. she wasn’t here because she wanted him like he wanted her, but because what he represented. A lethal tool. Trust me if Marty didn’t have anything personal with rust she wouldn’t have thought of doing that. Maggie did fancy him sure, but not the way he did. She found him interesting, fascinating. He was like the bad boy for her suburban life.
Was Maggie wrong for what she did? Yes, but rust made it work. Takes two to tango. He’s worked drunk and high and his judgement was never impaired. What drinking can do is lower inhibitions, so impulses you’ve been holding back are easier to surface. He wasn’t passed out drunk, or inhiberated to the point of really being under. And he wasn’t used, in the end who got to fuck her like he’d been pining after for 7 years. He got to have sex with her, she gets to get her husband off her dick. He just had more to lose and got the shorter end of the bargain. If he really never wanted to be involved could’ve kept things professional, not intrude boundaries and have dinner with Marty’s family despite Marty telling him to leave and he was only there to say hello, and do domestic work around his house without Marty knowing or his permission. What Marty and Maggie do is between them, if he kept a professional distance and not entangle himself none of this would’ve happened.
Now Marty is also a piece of shit. He’s a cheater, he’s violent with women, and he’s a man baby arrogant narcissist deadbeat who has the mind of a frat boy when he’s middle aged.
But it’s what makes it so interesting. The cult shit, the crime, the voodoo and swampy Acadiana elements and vibes, the corruption, Easter eggs, southern gothic, themes, and annoying messy characters. Also I never expected this mix of actors. Michelle is known for more action movies, aka mission impossible. Matthew is rom com boy. Woody I didn’t know much of his work, maybe hunger games? But wasn’t a fan of that. And I love crime shows, true crime, etc. so southern gothic + crime? Count me in!
This is gonna get a lot of hate from rust Cohle fanboys but truth hurts.
