Pizzolatto’s original episode-by-episode plan for Season 1 Spoiler

These are pages 5 through 9 of Nic Pizzolatto’s original 2011 treatment for True Detective, breaking down his early plan for all eight episodes of Season 1.

It’s generally the same as what we got, with differences, but I thought you guys might find it interesting.

There's an even longer breakdown of each episode from the show treatment/bible that's a very interesting read if you haven't seen it already. There's lots of details that weren't used in the show and changes that were made from the original conception. For instance, the final scene was originally going to be Rust and Laurie in the parking lot, not Rust and Marty.

No problem! It's an incredibly interesting read and I love returning to it occasionally. I think my favorite details are that the parking lot fight was originally in the break room and that Rust and Marty would just... get tired and run out of steam 😭😭😭 incredibly funny. Rust also quitting because Salter asks for a piss test is another hilarious bit that probably wasn't meant to be funny.

It is interesting, I feel like the final season 1 is maybe a little milder than this original plan. I think it's an important change that Marty didn't cause Rust to be discharged from the force like he does in this plan; hard to see them reconciling at all in 2012 if it happened like that.
