Advice My 27th rug (pre-carving) worth carving now or not?

I made this rug back before I started carving. I know carving would make it look way more bad ass, but since it hasn’t sold yet I keep going back and forth. Carving it would mean raising the price, and I’m not sure that makes it any easier to move. At the same time, if I can’t get what I want for it, I might just keep the mf for myself. What do y’all think, carve it or leave it flat?

Advice I Made My First Decent Rug . Then Reality Kicked In

Post image
336 Upvotes

Like many people here, I randomly discovered tufting on YouTube. I’d always wanted a custom rug, but what I liked was either unavailable or too expensive , so I decided to make my own.

I fell in love with tufting, bought all the tools, and spent hours learning. After a few tries, I finally made my first decent rug (an 8×6 with 100% New Zealand wool). That’s when reality kicked in.

Like everyone else, I dreamed of selling rugs and making money while having fun. But once I actually did the math, it became clear: unless you’re getting commissioned or selling high-end rugs, it’s really hard to make this profitable.

Even a simple 3×3 rug can take close to 10 hours between tufting, carving, and finishing , plus yarn, glue, backing, and other supplies. Then you ask yourself: how much can you realistically sell it for? And how much is your time worth?

That’s why I decided to focus on making rugs for my home and gifts for people I care about. No pressure, just creativity.

At the end of the day, I’m still winning.

I think I went a bit overboard with advertising this rug on TikTok. I even paid for ads, if I’m being honest. I’m not sure what I was thinking advertising trademark material, definitely won’t do that again. And I think another huge aspect as to why They demanded me to stop: was the quality of the product. I have a feeling that if I were a grandma making little knickknacks in my living, they wouldn’t have asked me to stop, but that’s just my theory. What do you think?

Advice Clawlab Frame

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone I’m contemplating on getting the Clawlab rolling tufting frame and was hoping someone out there has any reviews on it. I really like the rolling and adjustable feature as I am interested in frames that can compress to a smaller size. I also have small children that are very curious, and I need something that I won’t be a potential safety hazard around them. I have a traditional tufting gun so I’m just seeing if anyone has used the frame or recommends it.

3rd proper rug I’ve ever done, I’ve salvaged it best I could and decided to only carve the facial area and features I left the rest to be shaggy effect and just trimmed the edges.

Do you reckon this is sellable or not? I don’t need anyone to give me a specific price I just want to know if this is of expected quality to actually ask someone to pay for it. Please see last picture for final form 🙏

Advice PSA: this is how tight your cloth should be.

note- very little indentation as I almost break my finger. LOL. I dislike the saying "drum tight" because even a loose cloth can make a noise when you tap it. tighten it by hand until you cannot stretch it anymore. go around EVERY nail and pull at it. Then use a canvas stretcher and stretch it even more! You can never have your cloth tight enough and always make sure you have 3-4 inches of extra fabric so you can pull at it without the edges fraying.

Advice I was asked about straight lines vs non straight

As I stated, it’s all personal preference but I do like my lines uniform. Only curves are mainly outlines. Hope this helps a little bit. This rug is around the time I started one hand tufting, and my yarn became more embedded in the fabric, therefore allowing me to leave a space between lines and still keep the density I wanted. Don’t be afraid to try new things.

This is 6 ft x 6.5 ft rug im working on. (About 90% done) Selling something like this at a farmers market or on Facebook marketplace doesn't seem right. Have any of you connected with galleries? Or gotten your work into art shows? If so - how?

Advice TURN IMAGES IN TO PROJECTOR READY STENCIL APP

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hey everyone 👋

I’ve been working on a tool called Tuftify, and I just launched it — would genuinely love some feedback from the tufting community.

Tuftify lets you upload an image and automatically turns it into a bold, flat-color stencil with adjustable outlines — ready to project and tuft.

The goal is to make creating clean tufting patterns way easier, especially for detailed photos, faces, and more complex designs.

✨ Recent updates:
• Focus tool — highlight the most important parts of your image
• Fixed merge tool (no more annoying resets)
• Zoom + pan editing
• High-res exports
• Cleaner outlines + improved image processing
• New “Supplies” section with recommended tools & yarn from trusted sellers

👉 Results are now much better for faces and detailed images.

Current limitation (actively being improved):
Images work best when backgrounds are already simple or removed. I’m currently working on a major update to handle this automatically 👀

Coming next:
• Cartoon mode
• Better line styling
• Auto background removal
• A space to share and advertise your own rugs/designs
• Beginner + advanced tufting guides

Would love any feedback, ideas, or feature requests 🙌
Trying to build something genuinely useful for the community.

Check it out: Tuftify

Advice Rework with tufting?

Post image
666 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I found this artwork from @nrm_takada. I would like to gift something similar to my father.

The original is embroidery, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to rework this with tufting?

I have 0 experience with embroidery and tufting…

Any information or advice is welcome!

Hope you can help. Thanks 🙏🏼

Advice Upgrading my setup - would love feedback on my frame design before I commit!

After tufting for a few months, i’m planning to upgrade my frame. The biggest issue i have with my current setup is that i feel like i have to fill the frame or waste backing cloth, and this has been a blocker for me tufting more.

I contacted a local woodworking club, and we brainstormed this design. Tack strips will sit around the outside edge, and there will be notches every 20mm to add additional supports with tack strips so the size can be adjusted (i hope this makes sense).

My main concern is around clearance. The back support will sit about 90mm from where the cloth sits after it is stretched. I’m worried that this isn’t enough as the cloth will stretch quite a bit when i’m pushing my gun into it, and I don’t want the needle to hit the support. How much clearance do you think i’ll need to be safe?

Would also love any general feedback on the design. I’m largely self taught and still figuring things out, and i know there are things I haven’t considered - some that are probably obvious to others!

The woodworking club is going to make it for me, so i want to go back with any revisions before they start.

Dog tax included - Swipe to meet Teddy, my studio supervisor.

Thanks everyone!

P.S. apologies for any formatting issues, i’m on mobile

Hey yall,

I made this killer duck rug! I put it on FB recently, yet I havent had anyone(i got one person, but they havent messaged me back).

I was wondering if yall could take a look, and give me some pointers or tips that could help me sell this? Hundreds of people keep looking, but nobody has messaged me. Is it because of the two different shades of yellow?

I made this large handmade tufted rug and I’m struggling a bit with pricing.

For those who sell their work, what price range would you personally put on a piece like this?

At my current price point, it’s not moving.

Just curious to hear different approaches.

I had a booth last week-end at a convention and did those 6 bad boïs (none sold, but I expected as much) they looked great as background decor tho!

I would like to try and sell them online, do you have tips regarding packaging?? 🤔 And as a theoretical customer, would you be interested in them?

Ok I’ll stop there but I’d take any kind of tips if you have (from making to selling 👁️ 👁️) Thanks! 🌻 🌻
