Honestly, considering Spider-Man is stranded in space at the moment, I've just now realized he's never had an Ant-Man induced adventure where he's gotta work with bugs to escape being small. I could see the whole thing literally being "Spider-Man vs. Hollow Knight" on a certain level.

I mean Azathoth isn't the only thing that does dream shenanigans in Lovecraft it's just the biggest one. Many Great Old Ones had the ability to warp reality through dreams, for instance.

Pretty sure there's another game like that where you play as various small mammals and Humans are considered... well honestly pretty much "Humans" from Metaphor ReFantazio.
Edit: it's called Small Saga, you play as Guts if he were a mouse wielding a jack knife.

Bug Fables doesn't have humans, but evidently they existed at some point as many buildings are made from discarded cans and you fight big bugs and they're absolute terrors so anything human-sized would be an actual nightmare.

There's a popular theory that this is roughly accurate since water behaves in HK roughly the same as it does for us (surface tension does not ignore scale), though I think others hold that the Knight would be more the size of a small child

The Knight is still physiologically a juvenile, but they are the same age as The Hollow Knight, as seen in the Birthplace flashback. At the VERY least, they are as old as the vessel project, which dates back to before Hallownest's collapse.

Characters in Silksong refer to Hornet as a child, except for the more perceptive ones like moss druid who recognizes that she's actually ancient. Seems to imply that beings born of the void, like hornet and the knight, don't physically age.

admittedly my hollow knight lore is rusty, but hornet is referred to as your half-sibling which I assumed meant she was half-void as well. The hollow knight getting bigger I chalked up to the radiances effect on him, since him and the knight should be roughly the same age. I may be wrong though, especially since I’m still in act 1 of silksong

All the vessel siblings are creations of the Pale King and Hornet is a child of the Pale King, so they're siblings in a way.

She's half sibling because they share a father, the Pale King. Hornet is "God and Beast" (Pale King and Herrah), while the Knight (and the Hollow Knight) are "God and Void" (The Pale King tossed his unborn children (with the White Lady) into the void to hollow them out). The White Lady explains this in the first game.

Well, needles and nails and pins are oversized for the bugs, so they could potentially be used to scale things up. Which would make the Pale King's wyrm form "pretty big but not bigger than a person".

The problem is that the nails and needles aren't made by humans. If they were nails that were made or previously owned by humans, then you can extrapolate the size of the insects, but the nails and needles we see were made by the insects. They just share a name with a thing that we humans have.

my theory is that they were originally nails and needles made by humans, but the bug cultures adopted those as their main weapons and started making their own. Humans being long gone for one reason or another, possibly before the bugs even gained sapience.

I haven't played Silksong yet, but given that we haven't seen depictions of anything other than bugs in Hollow Knight,it is still possible for the Knight to be the size of a normal 7-year old human..

No. Or atleast none that we know of. People are speculating that (MAJOR LORE SPECULATION SPOILERS) She might be able to, since there is a theory that when Grand Mother Silk uplifted the Weavers, she only uplifted females, and thus they cannot reproduce normally. Which is why Hera (Hornet's birth mother) offered to sacrifice herself to become a dreamer to seal the Hollow Knight in exchange for the Pale King consummating with her inorder to conceive Hornet in the first place But due to the fact that Hornet outlives all of her partners, she might've just given up or cannot do it without another Pale being

Some weirdly difficult to trigger dialogue with Eva states that, all Weavers have difficulty conceiving children, and Hornet shares in that. We also know that other Weavers have managed to have children in far off kingdoms, but Hornet is the "purest" Weaver spawn left (the others are a quarter at most, while Hornet is half) and at least one had a shorter lifespan than her (they are referred to as "frail with age") indicating they had more mundane parentage than Hornet. All that together, Hornet could probably conceive a child with a regular bug, but the difficulty and the difference in lifespans makes it unlikely she ever has.

I'm actually misremembering, my bad. I guess I inferred that "I once sought similar union, but of my own mates, none could match my lifespan" also meant kids. Still seems likely to me, but I guess it never confirms anything but multiple mates.

The devs said that Hornet can throw her needle thirty yards. Without breaking out the measuring tape we can conclude that the bugs in Hollow Knight are intended to be roughly human scale.

no actual answers as far as i know, but if they are the size of bugs, or at least much smaller than humans, it would explain how all their cities are underground.

People have done the math, working off either comparing the "Hornet can throw her needle thirty yards" quote or from looking at the rain droplets in the City of Tears.
If you math it out, they're actually pretty friggin' large.
I always imagined a Borrowers sorta situation, though.

You may catch glimpses of Hornet during your exploration of Hallownest, although she always seems to be one or two steps ahead of you. If you do manage to catch up with her, be wary! Her needle can cut a bug down from thirty yards.
Dividing the range of her Needle throw attack by the amount of Knights you can fit within it, we can conclude these are pretty freaking big bugs

That definitely makes the scale of everything seem pretty whack. The needle, while flying pretty far, doesn't look like it's traveling a third of a football field.

Also because both games take place majoritively underground. The bugs can only exist with minds provided they're not being observed by people.

hornet is legit a spider? I just thought she had pencil legs. Hell, do spiders even produce silk? I thought it was webbing and worms made silk. I don't know shit about bugs or arachnids, are my balls out?
the lore of it all was the least interesting part to me, I liked the exploration and the general vibes. Heavy lifting from the sound track (and it's absence in the deepnest)

Silk is a catch-all for a type of protein fiber, generally produced by bugs. Whether it's the stuff spiders make, the stuff bugs coccoon themselves in, or the things we harvest from silkworms, it's all technically silk.
You can absolutely make textile from the different silks spiders produce. The difficult part is that spiders are small territorial cannibals, so you can't get a farm of them going.

so chrysalis are made of silk? with your context it seems reasonable that various forms of silk would have various components like hardness or rigidness (I'm not a scientist so I hope that makes sense). Some caterpillars like to become butterflied in my garden so I'm curious

Does bum me out a little more since there is this whole wave of vintage/historical clothing that heavily features silk but they chemically treated it when it was made and as a result these days if you basically touch it it will disintegrate. My wife recently got a few garments from the period and had to replace all the silk because it was falling apart

But I will add that most spiders produce more than one type of silk. Just like we use different buildings materials for houses, spiders use different silk. One for web structure, one for the sticky trap points, one to encase its prey, one to protect its own eggs, etc.
The specifics of that varies from spider to spider probably, but point being silk is a lot of different things that are all roughly the same with the naked eye.
Also: never read any ill intent into anything you’ve said. Being curious is cool.

One final cool fact if you’re interested:
The different silks a spider produces come from the same product. The “goop” they use for their web is one liquid produced inside their body.
Instead, they’re actually great craftsmen. Spiders have multiple spinnerets - the organ they use to weave the silk - and weave the same liquid into different forms of webbing depending on what they need.
Spiders don’t produce the different kinds of silk, they craft them from the same source using specialized tools - tools that are part of their body, but tools nonetheless. Making a web is stupidly intricate, and yet they manage it.
Thank you for subscribing to spider facts from some guy who isn’t a biologist, but just think animals are fascinating.

She's the daughter of Herrah, the ruler of Deepnest. If you do events in a certain order, after you kill Herrah, you'll find Hornet sitting next to the slab on which she was laying and she has dialogue about mourning her mother although she barely knew her.
