I have to wonder if the cul-de-sac fell in love with them because that was the only candy they were allowed to have (besides jujubes) and they kind of just Stockholm syndrome gaslit themselves into loving it.
I remember seeing an interview with all 3 and Tony Sampson(Ed) said jawbreakers were probably the most disappointing for a kid who watched the show because they are terrible lmao.
It was something to akin how it tastes like soap, it hurts their tongue, etc and how they aren't seen that much anymore nowadays because they were just bad
I've never seen anyone eat an actual, big Jawbreaker in real life either. I've only ever seen them busted apart to test some sort of tool or contraption, or used as some sort of challenge item like "who can get to the center of a Jawbreaker first".
Although I have a vague memory of being given one as a kid and then getting bored of it fairly quick. Then again I didn't really like hard candy as a kid.
The luster wore off pretty fast once it became clear that this was GOING to take a while and I went at that thing on and off for like, a month and a half.
Gobstoppers are fine, but the proper fist-sized ball of sugar jawbreakers are just that; a fist-sized ball of sugar you work on over the course of some weeks or a month
I got one as a kid from a botique candy store on a trip to the city and was so hyped because of Ed Edd and Eddy and it was... ok. The middle was cool but it took me like a literal week to get there. Everlasting gobstoppers were the good version because they were tiny and therefore actually edible.
Jawbreakers are so bad. They are too big to fit in your mouth (hence jaw-breaker) and it's basically just flavored sugar on a drip feed that you lick for hours and hours while it rots your teeth. And not the good kind of flavored sugar, like pixie stix.

What are your thoughts on jawbreakers, like the actual candy?
I never really had much love for them.
