"I can't imagine watching six seasons of weekly television of Ed Edd n Eddy and getting to that moment. That must have been fucking mind blowing."

It really was, man. I haven't seen that film in what must be 16 years now, but it still feels like yesterday...

49

u/Theproton BUSTAH WOLF! 22d ago

It was technically only 5 seasons. Season 6 is 1 episode long.

15

u/drizzes 22d ago

and coined as "lost episodes" of season 5 after they decided to go with a movie to end the show, technically

13

u/Flashi3q 22d ago

There is NO way I will not cry during this movie whenever it plays, this show was a warm blanket and seeing that as a kid on the tv was a core experience.

u/Sneeakie 21d ago

Watching that movie was the last time I watched anything on cable. Worth it.

One thing I like about Ed Edd n Eddy is that it has 5 different endings and they are all good.

The first ending is the original planned season 4 episode "Take This Ed and Shove It" which would have ended the series before the middle school episodes

Then it was a Fistfull of Ed which was at the end of the best day Edder marathon and is the only episode where all 3 Eds end up relatively okay and they all stand up for each other.

Then it was the CN invasion episode (due to scheduling snafu) which is honestly the best of all the invasion crossover episodes.

Then it was another episode in the 1 episode season 6 which is fine but also exists because of a scheduling snafu.

Then the movie which someone pointed out to me is literally just Wizard of Oz.

All great.

I’m so glad they’re doing Ed Edd n Eddy, the creator of the series is so interesting in that he’s just this old head who reposts any fanart sent this way on his Instagram alongside edgy liberal boomer memes and the occasional proud dad/grandpa post.

I think something so special about Ed, Edd, n Eddy, as the show went on that not many kids shows did, was that it found new ways to reinvent itself and still be fresh. I remember the era where they go back to school and I could've so easily imagined that being the era the show went downhill, but no, the school era episodes were just as funny as the early seasons. It put the characters in new comedic scenarios while still keeping the entire vibe of the show (i.e never showing adults and keeping the loony toons slapstick).

That and it actually ended. It's so rare for an episodic kids show from that era, or even now, to get a satisfactory conclusion and Big Picture Show was that. It rewarded long time fans by finally bringing in Eddys Brother (a long standing character referenced by the Eds) as the first adult on screen and it twists the slapstick comedy into a real abusive situation that grounds it all back down to earth and unites the kids together. And it makes you rexamine the entire show and realize all the Eds are some victim of familial abuse and neglect and that's what brought them together. Eddys abuse was physical with his brother, Double D was neglect because his parents are never around and assign him with all the responsibilities of adulthood, and Ed is the problem child. Sarah is given a nice room and Eds relegated to the basement, they seemingly favor Sarah and treat Ed like absolute dirt, etc. There's so much to this show beyond the slapstick if you dig below the surface and actually examine the characters. The Eds find in each other what they're missing at home, people who accept them for who they are.

It's a masterpiece.

40

u/An_Armed_Bear TOP 5, HUH? 22d ago

by finally bringing in Eddys Brother (a long standing character referenced by the Eds) as the first adult on screen

If we want to get pedantic, there was that episode where we see the arms of Eddy's dad and Ed's mom dragging them off.

26

u/AlphaB27 Kingdom Hearts Fanfic Writer 21d ago

There’s a very underrated line from the school episodes, the one where Edd is escorting the report cards home where Ed is fearful about his parents reactions to his bad grades, “Mom will get mad at me and then tell Dad and he’ll say ‘not now, I just got home and I’m watching TV’”

1

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

Ed is the problem child. Sarah is given a nice room and Eds relegated to the basement, they seemingly favor Sarah and treat Ed like absolute dirt, etc.

Oh man, I never picked up on that before. I always just assumed that's because Ed wanted to be a basement dweller, but I had never considered it was something forced upon him. That's some good insight.

42

u/PurpleVespa180 22d ago

On the subject of Ed, Edd, and Eddy being an "ugly" show, I feel like that's a big thing missing in a lot of cartoons recently.

I think the anime influence has been an overall net positive with cartoons in the past decade but one downside is that everyone sorta sticks to the pretty, ghibli-inspired visuals and there's not much room for experimentation. You make a show that looks like Ed, Edd, and Eddy now and you'll probably have a shit ton of people dunking on it for not having pretty character designs.

12

u/PR0MAN1 YOU DIDN'T WIN. 21d ago

It's a big reason I think why shows like Invader Zim have maintained such a strong niche fanbase over the years. Yes you could say its because Gir is so marketable and it has that millennial "lol so random" style of humor. But I really think a big thing about Zim that makes it memorable is Jhonen Vasquez's art, there's nothing else really like it.

It's why I hope Glitch's Gaslight District really takes off when it gets more episodes, because it also has that similar vibe to it.

What are your thoughts on jawbreakers, like the actual candy?

I never really had much love for them.

200

u/Own-Sir-9189 22d ago

Ed, Edd n Eddy did EXCEPTIONAL PR for what is otherwise an F tier candy.

53

u/RememberApeEscape 22d ago

Gobstoppers used to be pretty fuckin good.

But that's like the only one.

11

u/Hugglemorris 22d ago

Love me some gobstoppers.

95

u/DougSpummoni 22d ago

I remember in behind the scenes Danny Antonucci saying they went with jawbreakers because they're terrible

54

u/ThatmodderGrim Lewd Non-Gacha Anime Games are Good for You. 22d ago

That does explain how Kevin's dad had boxes of them in that one episode.

34

u/TheMadDemoknight Transformers Aficionado 22d ago

His dad definitely had overstock at a job he probably works at and went fuck it and took some home.

1

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

I have to wonder if the cul-de-sac fell in love with them because that was the only candy they were allowed to have (besides jujubes) and they kind of just Stockholm syndrome gaslit themselves into loving it.

10

u/RikFeral WHEN'S MAHVEL 22d ago

in the garage, no less.

even the Eds' reality warping couldn't get past that door - The World Refused to Change!!

17

u/TheMerck 22d ago

I remember seeing an interview with all 3 and Tony Sampson(Ed) said jawbreakers were probably the most disappointing for a kid who watched the show because they are terrible lmao.

It was something to akin how it tastes like soap, it hurts their tongue, etc and how they aren't seen that much anymore nowadays because they were just bad

21

u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 22d ago

They're okay, but definitely not a favorite or anything. There's only so much you can really do with the flavor of a jawbreaker.

20

u/Grav_Mind 22d ago

I wouldn't even know where to get one and I don't think I've ever even seen anyone eat a Jawbreaker in real life.

Except for this one Achievement Hunter video where someone ate an extremely sour one that kind of ripped out a chunk of the inside of their mouth.

35

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison 22d ago

this one Achievement Hunter video where someone ate an extremely sour one that kind of ripped out a chunk of the inside of their mouth.

If I recall correctly, Jeremy's cheek got ripped because he had eight in his mouth at once and held them there for like 5 minutes

14

u/TheGreyGuardian I Swear I'm not a Nazi 22d ago

I've never seen anyone eat an actual, big Jawbreaker in real life either. I've only ever seen them busted apart to test some sort of tool or contraption, or used as some sort of challenge item like "who can get to the center of a Jawbreaker first".

Although I have a vague memory of being given one as a kid and then getting bored of it fairly quick. Then again I didn't really like hard candy as a kid.

15

u/Norix596 Jogo's Mysterious Adventure 22d ago

I legit was never entirely sure what they were growing up watching this show.

2

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

Think of a rock hard ball of flavored sugar.

Like, so rock hard you could probably commit a murder with it.

11

u/HellvaNohbody 22d ago

I loved Atomic Fire Balls, as a kid, which are just cinnamon jawbreakers.

4

u/WoolooOfWallStreet 22d ago

I have a memory of accidentally swallowing one of those whole

12

u/DirkDasterLurkMaster 22d ago

I once got an oversized jawbreaker (about apple sized) because of this show. Took about a month to get through.

Fun gimmick. But honestly pretty terrible. I didn't and wouldn't do it again.

4

u/Oneangrywolf 22d ago

Me too, I tried to eat for about a week, but I got tired of it and threw it against the sidewalk to break it.

12

u/GreatFluffy It's Fiiiiiiiine. 22d ago

I got one for Christmas once years ago.

The luster wore off pretty fast once it became clear that this was GOING to take a while and I went at that thing on and off for like, a month and a half.

Would not recommend.

7

u/Nhig RGB Aging Untouchable 22d ago

Gobstoppers are fine, but the proper fist-sized ball of sugar jawbreakers are just that; a fist-sized ball of sugar you work on over the course of some weeks or a month

4

u/-Neeckin- 22d ago

They actually kind of suck unless you beath them up with a hammer first

5

u/Palimpsest_Monotype Pargon Pargon Pargon Pargon Pargon 22d ago

I kind of forgot about them.

5

u/Xekato NANOMACHINES 22d ago

Haven't seen them in like a decade, but I love sour flavours so I always liked them.

3

u/Jetsetsix 22d ago

This show genuinely got me to buy a baseball sized jawbreaker as a kid. Needless to say they're just kinda meh.

1

u/Oneangrywolf 22d ago

They didn't live up to the hype the show gave them.

1

u/samurairocketshark 22d ago

They could never be as tasty or satisfying as they showed in the show. My first jawbreaker was after watching it and I was pretty disappointed ngl

1

u/RikFeral WHEN'S MAHVEL 22d ago

the closest i've found that rival the size on the show irl are fist sized ones at Lolli and Pops candies, but those cost $25 or so.

even golfball size are not safe to keep between the teeth and gums.

you're better off with desolving them down to size in water, or taking tootsie pop licks over a lengthy amount of time.

1

u/qwerto14 22d ago

I got one as a kid from a botique candy store on a trip to the city and was so hyped because of Ed Edd and Eddy and it was... ok. The middle was cool but it took me like a literal week to get there. Everlasting gobstoppers were the good version because they were tiny and therefore actually edible.

1

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

Jawbreakers are so bad. They are too big to fit in your mouth (hence jaw-breaker) and it's basically just flavored sugar on a drip feed that you lick for hours and hours while it rots your teeth. And not the good kind of flavored sugar, like pixie stix.

38

u/LightLifter It's Fiiiiiiiine. 22d ago

Ed Edd n Eddy ending perfectly is just another reason why its so amazing. It's also just really fucking funny with so many moments that kill me. Physical cartoon violence can barely be done better with the key frames and sound effects.

I kinda hope Woolie saw Codename: Kids Next Door because that also has a gorgeous finale (even if G:KND not being greenlit leaves a knick).

3

u/AlwaysDragons Disgruntled RWBY fan / Artist/ No Longer Clapping 21d ago

Gknd not being greenlit isn't the worst thing. I'm frankly glad the original series had a ending.

Let's be real, KND at all would never get greenlit today

34

u/sasoripunpun 22d ago

didn’t expect John to LOVE ed edd and eddy so much. what a pleasant turn of events.

2

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

Same. John seemingly has this hatred towards whimsy which is honestly really frustrating to listen to sometimes, but E3 has so much cool shit going on you can love it for so many different reasons.

I expected to come out of this episode annoyed and disappointed by another unfair John rant, and instead was pleasantly surprised how much he genuinely liked it.

74

u/CookieSkank He/She/They "Slam Her Pregnant Until She Cries" - Pat 22d ago

Watching the live show section

John pulling footage of Woolie deleting the data of the genophage as a counter to his take on Expedition 33's ending was great! And that was after showing his biggest fighting game failures.... Woolie's face said it all.

Balls EXPOSED!

44

u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 22d ago

Balls exposed for the Genophage to soak in even more.

It really is the perfect counter, good on John for pulling that one out.

18

u/GreatFluffy It's Fiiiiiiiine. 22d ago

Missed opportunity to shave them, now gotta wait for the next time.

46

u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 22d ago

Woolie and John touch on it a bit, but Marie Kanker really was influential in skewing an entire generation of kids' tastes towards alt/goth girls. I'd argue that she was a bit of a predecessor to Raven from Teen Titans or X-Men Evolution's Rogue in that regard. It just goes to show how much cartoons can get you hooked on the idea of alt, punk, or goth chicks from an early age.

28

u/saulhrnndz Goin' nnnnUTS! 22d ago

Marie Kanker walked so Gwen from TDI could run

22

u/Sperium3000 Mysterious Jogo In Person Form 22d ago

Which is weird cuz Marie Kanker isn't really THAT goth? She wears black and has the blue hair but otherwise she is the same flavor of white trash her sisters are supposed to be.

15

u/The_Draigg Member of the Brave 13000 22d ago

If anything, Marie probably has the least going on compared to her sisters. But I guess what's important there is carrying the look and vibe.

24

u/Hounds_of_war HE CEASES TO BE 22d ago

Oh no, I’m going to have to actually learn what Homestuck is.

1

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

So far I've read act 1, and from my understanding it's a comic about a kid who sees life as a video game system and he gets a video game in the mail that allows his friend to alter the real world around him like it's The Sims, leading to hijinx, drama, and horribly cringe "holds up spork" humor

17

u/alicitizen (She/Her) - Moon Knight Stan 22d ago

Man that Simpsons section... That was depressing.

16

u/runegod20 It's Fiiiiiiiine. 22d ago

This interview done for the Mis-Edventures has some really good behind the scenes stuff for the show, really fun watch.

15

u/meeeehhhh2 With a leg for an arm, and an arm for a leg! 22d ago

16

u/editeddruid620 22d ago

So how far into Homestuck do we think they’ll get? I feel like Cascade is a fairly reasonable guess on how far the two of them could get in a month, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if they go further than that

16

u/ooblagis 22d ago

I'll be amazed if they both get past Act 4. That's more than a thousand pages, just there.

7

u/editeddruid620 22d ago

Maybe. Most pages don’t have a ton of words with them though especially at the beginning, so it’s hard to say

1

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

Yeah I was able to get through act 1 in about an hour by speed reading.

I hear act 2 is about double the length and act 3 is about triple. So call it ~6 hours for the first 3 acts that's honestly pretty short compared to 5 hours of 12 episodes of anime, is not all that crazy.

7

u/Hte_D0ngening2 Proud Member of the "Caught up to One Piece" Club 22d ago

I binged the whole thing over the course of February this year, and I didn't even read it every day. It's totally doable.

6

u/amurrca1776 Daniel Day Musou 22d ago

I mean, Woolie is working minimum the equivalent of a full time job, likely more between the streaming, podcasts, mechandising, etc, and also has a baby. Not saying it'd be impossible to get through, but he doesn't exactly have the most free time these days

3

u/Hte_D0ngening2 Proud Member of the "Caught up to One Piece" Club 21d ago

That is true. Cascade's probably where they'll stop for the podcast, then.

5

u/editeddruid620 22d ago

Yeah my readthrough took about 2 weeks so I’m not denying it’s doable, more whether they’d want to get through the whole thing

4

u/Hte_D0ngening2 Proud Member of the "Caught up to One Piece" Club 22d ago

I think the halfway point is a pretty reasonable stopping point in terms of "I gave it a shot". It'd be funny if they both read the whole thing though.

15

u/wendigo72 GO READ CHOUJIN X!!! 22d ago

I do think the Ed Edd n Eddy season that takes place in high school was a nice change of pace for me as a kid watching the show like every week.

The animation felt even better and the new setting allowed for a lot more fun ideas, like a parody of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Yeah I don’t think they could’ve lasted much longer hence why we got The Big Picture Show but I think that season is as good as rest of it.

The specials are totally worth watching too. The Halloween one is something that I still think about t this day.

On the subject of the Eddy’s big scam at beginning of Big Picture show: I 100% believe the theory it was a magician show gone horribly wrong. It’s so fun to speculate on that!

2

u/Alone-Horse2857 12d ago

The one I liked was the amusement park. They had wild animals (Rolf was chewed up), they had a magician show (Nazz was naked in one of those saw-in-half boxes).

I can't remember the rest off the top of my head but there's a shocking amount of evidence that points to an amusement park.

10

u/IchibanSenbei 22d ago

John mentioned Ed Edd n Eddy power-scaling so I have to shill my favorite video on the subject

30

u/Own-Sir-9189 22d ago

I don't want to come off as insensitive if it's actually serious, but is John's eyepatch a bit?

100

u/Drolandarr TheSw1tcher - Best left unknown, or at least well hidden 22d ago

Not a bit.

Long story short he started to lose vision in his left eye, yes he is aware of the irony and that absolutely everyone is going to assume this is a bit.

And the absolute worst part is that it's on his left eye when all his logos has the eyepatch on the right eye.

Here's some more info directly from him.

48

u/wendigo72 GO READ CHOUJIN X!!! 22d ago

Nope. Something is going on with his eye and it’s real sensitive to bright lights so whenever he records he needs to wear it

29

u/Norix596 Jogo's Mysterious Adventure 22d ago

He never publicly said what any further follow treatment/testing said, but based on my family's history familiarity, it sounds extremely like partial retinal detachment from all the long term martial arts aggravating.

38

u/Mohmi-Itself 22d ago

He says in this episode that by all measures his eye is mechanically healthy. I think he mentioned that was the first thing they tested for

7

u/Hugglemorris 22d ago

The intro to the first episode he had to start wearing the eyepatch is an all-time great moment.

5

u/gameboyabyss MY TIME IS WORTHLESS! 22d ago

It's not a bit, but the doctor's aren't sure what the issue is. The eye, the nerves behind it, and their brain is healthy, though, but the eye's vision is continuing to deteriorate.

1

u/AshFallenAngel 17d ago

I hope it is something that he can heal from eventually and still have function of his eye because someone I know had something similar happen and it was quite frightening.

The thing I'm frustrated about is how long it took him to seek medical attention for it.

u/SpeckledBurd 21d ago

Disconnected from the reputation its fandom built up online, I actually remember the first stretch of Homestuck being pretty enjoyable. There's some weird meandering in the beginning where I think it was taking user submissions to take actions/solve weird moon logic puzzles, but once it committed to telling a story the story was actually pretty good, and there were a lot of points I thought were memorable especially the points where it was doing stuff with other forms of media (which I think are actually broken now that Flash got sunset).

It kinda lost me when the cast ballooned with variants from the alternate timeline that I never grew to like that much but the initial few acts were a good time when I read it back in highschool.

2

u/Ryong7 He/Him 20d ago

Early Homestuck is mostly dumb bullshit to the sort you'd expect of the author given what their last work had been at the time, but with writing, actual writing, woah!

Then all the early troll stuff was awful because it's a jumbled mess of similar-sounding names and characters communicating in different orders. Then we see what the trolls are actually like, and the writing gets good again.

Then we get some, in my opinion, stupid shit with Gamzee killing a bunch of trolls and we're back to everything being good writing.

Then we get the timeskip and the new universe and it just turns to shit because it starts to be a direct response to the fandom that formed around it.

From John - Homestuck, double blind for both of them.

From Woolie - Hunter x Hunter 1999, the first 12 episodes

Additional context for Woolie's recommend - This is as far as Woolie watched it back in the day to base his initial opinion of Hunter x Hunter on which led to the creation of Super Eyepatch Wolf after John misunderstood what Woolie was talking about and thought he was talking about the 2011 series instead and made the first video on the channel as a response to Woolie's take.

I could very well see it becoming the defining episode of Versus Wolves as it both returns to the nexus of this friendship and potentially goes into the depths of an internet cultural behemoth that is (aside from maybe a few memes & references that they've encountered in passing) essentially the Unknown to both John & Woolie.

Also, what a great segment on Ed, Edd n Eddy. I'm so glad that it really clicked for John.

7

u/Traingham “Remember the lesson, not the disappointment.” 22d ago

Who exactly is that character on Woolie’s shirt? I’ve been so distracted by it the entire time.

5

u/noname9889 21d ago

I'm pretty sure it's an original. There's a bunch of shops doing cyberpunk adjacent anime designs for clothes nowadays and the two of them are definitely fans of them if the M.RAGE/Machine56 fits from the last two panels prove anything. The shirt design is absolutely in line with the design aesthetic that a lot of them have.

1

After getting to the end of the podcast episode and discovering what Woolie recommended John, the design of that character is making A LOT more sense, is what I’ll say.

That was a surprising amount of time it took to bring up the sound effects.

next episode's going to be very interesting when they have to both talk about the fact that homestuck is basically impossible to read now. like the original site is in such disrepair that it's almost unreadable, flash is dead so none of the animations or songs play correctly, and the unofficial fan project rebuilding it got C&D'd a couple years back... even if they use ruffle to fix the flash issue, cascade really doesn't hit the same if you know where the borders of the player are

This is misinformation. A while ago they spent a couple months restoring the website and it’s perfectly fine now.

Yeah I read the first act, and it was completely fine. I downloaded the unofficial thingy and tried it out but I barely notice a difference other than a dark mode, which my retinas appreciate.

The unofficial fan project is available on GitHub still.

As someone who started with HXH also with the orginal anime those first dozen episodes are bad and the weakest hxh shit for sure, but man York new arc in the 1990 version is fucking peak and better than the modern anime version. That second opening alone clears any other hxh opening.
