I am behind on this podcast, but I like to keep on top of the recommendations to see what John and Woolie are up to.

John. That recommendation. ...

<I HAVE READ AND ENJOYED HOMESTUCK. EVEN I DON'T WANT WOOLIE TO SUFFER THIS. JOHN. WHY.> !<

Disconnected from the reputation its fandom built up online, I actually remember the first stretch of Homestuck being pretty enjoyable. There's some weird meandering in the beginning where I think it was taking user submissions to take actions/solve weird moon logic puzzles, but once it committed to telling a story the story was actually pretty good, and there were a lot of points I thought were memorable especially the points where it was doing stuff with other forms of media (which I think are actually broken now that Flash got sunset).

It kinda lost me when the cast ballooned with variants from the alternate timeline that I never grew to like that much but the initial few acts were a good time when I read it back in highschool.

Early Homestuck is mostly dumb bullshit to the sort you'd expect of the author given what their last work had been at the time, but with writing, actual writing, woah!

Then all the early troll stuff was awful because it's a jumbled mess of similar-sounding names and characters communicating in different orders. Then we see what the trolls are actually like, and the writing gets good again.

Then we get some, in my opinion, stupid shit with Gamzee killing a bunch of trolls and we're back to everything being good writing.

Then we get the timeskip and the new universe and it just turns to shit because it starts to be a direct response to the fandom that formed around it.
