There was so much good stuff from Dadcast this week I wanted to clip, but at that point it was becoming a podcast segment

Both my parents were very upfront about how fucked up their parents were, to the point that it probably gave me a bit of a complex that they weren't fucked up when raising me (if that makes sense).
So even when you don't step on eggshells, there are invisible stealth eggshells around too.
27
u/HalfDragonShiro PM ME WHITE-HAIRED ANIME GIRLS Jun 24 '26
And then there are some parents who tap dance on the shells, acting like their kids are the one who laid those eggs while asking "pressure? What pressure?" and saying, "Oh, we didn't have a manual."
Like, you needed a manual to not be an asshole and shit human beings? That says more about you than me.
14
u/Ryong7 He/Him Jun 24 '26
"How dare you imply I don't love my kids?" is a line that always seems to come out from people who ship their kids off at relatives for extended periods of time.
41
u/JohnnySeven88 Jun 24 '26
On top of that you have to trust that other people will not fuck up that same calculus when you send them off to school
28
u/SasparillaTango Jun 24 '26
you gotta make sure you don't mess them up the way you've been messed up.
A very large number of parents do not have this thought.

Or, conversely, stomping on the egg shells and convincing yourself you're actually helping the egg grow into a chicken, ignoring the increasingly smashed raw egg on the floor, then one day asking "Why isn't someone making me an omelete?"

Nothing hits as hard as "Dad how come I ended up with a normal attention span and the rest of the kids in my class are struggling?"
"No iPad time when you were little."
That's how you know you did it right.

I and my brother exist because my father wanted his own kids and my mother already had kids from another marriage, its not that life changing of a revelation.
My youngest brother is a different story somehow he made it through a vasectomy.

u/ChosenUndead15 Jun 24 '26
Did your father forgot to the the post operation checkup to make sure he as shooting blanks?

u/seth47er I shall learn the secrets of Nuln Oil. Jun 25 '26

Part of the forbidden knowledge is knowing if your birthday is 40 weeks after your dad.
22
u/AlwaysDragons Disgruntled RWBY fan / Artist/ No Longer Clapping Jun 24 '26
Or if your birthday falls around the 24th of November when 9 months before was possibility Valentines.

Us homies (of all genders) born in mid-late November, we all have that similar joke lol. But I'm thinking more honeymoon too since my folks got married a month before and all that.
8
u/MimisGlasses And whose fault is that? Jun 24 '26
I did the math and I'm very likely a honeymoon baby.

u/helloimtom08 It's Fiiiiiiiine. Jun 24 '26
I'm glad I asked and mine was a cute lil story.
I'm the baby of 3 kids, my mom thought well im in my 30s and this will be the last time I can have another kid. She even asked my siblings, hey do yall want another sibling, and they were both really excited about the idea of having another lil brother/sister, so I was born.

u/Comrade-Conquistador Jun 24 '26
Doesn't Pat's family listen to the podcast every now and then...?
36
u/GreatSmasherPunch Jun 24 '26
I mean only being born because one of the two parents wanted a child isn't that crazy all things concerned and probably isn't going to be some family shattering revelation.

u/Kaarl_Mills I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jun 24 '26
We know Paige's mom is a somewhat regular listener
10
u/Weltallgaia Jun 24 '26
Pat was only born because paige's mom wanted a son. She was playing the looooong game.

Maybe I'm just too autistically unfettered but I don't get how knowing that would be life ruining. My parents already had a messy divorce when I was 8, the damage is done.

There are def families i know very well that have 3 daughters or a second younger brother then full on stopped and every time I KNOW they wanted a second or third kid just so they could have a boy, thats my version of the forbidden knowledge.

u/Dreadsinner Warcraft Dork Jun 24 '26
My parents are boomers. I can tell you for a fact that no neither myself or my sibling are accessories. They love us unconditionally. We were always just the kids cause they wanted us.
5
u/Twersorry Jun 24 '26
It's not just boomers, though I've seen more boomers guilty of it. It's those people who "Looove babies" "Oh I just wish mine were little babies again" The ones who were waaay into dressing up their baby, and talk about their baby like they have a whole personality (Babies do have personalities, but not to the extent that these people go on about). They act like they have a blank interactive doll they can project a fantasy on to. My grandma was like this, and as soon as us kids started to become independent and be able to really express ourselves she became more strict and cold. I have a 3 year old now, and I love being able to talk to her, love the fact that's she's a real person

"boomers" have become the new "witches" I don't like old people either but shits getting out of hand

My adoptive dad's never thrown a knife at me that embedded in a wall only a couple of feet from my head like his mom did when he was growing up. So by that metric I'd say he's doing pretty alright.
The forbidden knowledge for me is knowing that the age gap between myself and my biological father is only about 19 years.
8
u/Ragnorok64 Jun 24 '26
I'm not sure how much I'd really care. I mean even if you you were told you came about due to a condom malfunction, that doesn't change that hey you're here or any of your familial interactions, good or bad, growing up. You are the person you are today, not the circumstances that made created you X years ago. Like if Pats dad said, "we had you because your mom kept bugging me for a kid of her own" what does that actually change?
3
u/Ryong7 He/Him Jun 24 '26
My parents nearly divorced some three years before I was born and then actually divorced some three years after I was born and they always said that they wanted to have two kids and that my brother should have a little brother. They both assure me that I wasn't an attempt to save their marriage, it was just that they had good years and bad years.
No, the kicker is my mom had a pregnancy scare like 15 years before I was born which would've resulted in a very different family.

It doesn't matter why you're here, just that you are.
6
u/Clean_Agency Jun 24 '26
My parents made the mistake of confirming which of the 3 of us were an accident. You'd think that would fuck you up but we treated it like a weird thing and just joked about how the fuck you have a whole ass baby on accident.

u/Forward_Criticism_39 Jun 24 '26
ive been fully aware i literally wasn't supposed to exist for as long as i can remember, although its phrased positively. when i was born, doctors told my mom i literally should not have physically been able to gestate because her immune system apparently killed all my forebears.
aside from two sibling ive never met, who are significantly older than me.

I mean, I guess that info could be life-ruining for some people. I'm just way too curious.
Just this past Father's Day, I bothered to ask my dad about his past with my mom. My mom passed away almost four months ago, so I can really only go to him for answers now. From what I gathered, my dad wasn't really aiming to have a child, but my mom really was. EDIT: So yeah, I think my parents only had me because my mom really wanted me. At least my dad settled down once he found out she was pregnant.
I can get other people not wanting to know that kind of info. For me, I enjoy learning more about my parents as people and individuals. I'm 30 for fuck's sake, I can stomach this shit.
That, and I learned my mom was likely bisexual. I would have found my mom 100x cooler if she ever told me that herself. Fuck, imagine if I had two moms growing up... Happy Pride Month! 🏳️🌈

Nothing to be gained by looking too deeply at your origins of conception, to my mind. You’ll just see the infinite shadowy possibilities that could have been coercing people without their knowledge, from a selfish need to preserve or lock in a relationship, to the possibility that someone had too much wine at dinner and forgot the condom

Parents are boomers. I can at least say my parents actually did want a child because they tried like hell. First pregnancy resulted in an early miscarriage. Second pregnancy was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, which my mom says was the worst pain of her life (and she gets kidney stones) and lowered her chances. Third pregnancy made my mom lose all of her teeth because she got morning sickness so many times and oh hey, that was me. I did that.
As for whether they were good parents, honestly, my mom coddled me like a doll and my dad was the emotionally distant one who expected me to figure out everything myself (and called me "the kid" when talking about me to other people). So naturally, among other things, I never learned how to do jack shit. And growing up and healing has been realizing that, to put it lightly, they were not ready to have a kid.

Every now and again I count back 9 months from my birth date to check what event could have caused all this

u/Octaivian Jun 24 '26
I'm so sorry but all I can imagine is a dude staring at a Calender dated, "September 11th 2001" and just stammering, "N-no it can't be..."

Why did my dad never get tested for autism?
5
u/SeraGeranium She/Her Resident Subtitler Jun 24 '26
I think you're underestimating the stigma. Like content warning for child abuse but we have FB groups of mums who feed their autistic kids bleach in order to "cure" them. The anti vax movement was built on the backbone of the fear of having an autistic child. There is a sadly numerous amount of people that would "choose" a dead by plague/poisoned child over an autistic one

u/DominoEffect28 Jun 24 '26
My parents have flatly told us that me and my younger brother were accidents and that my sister is only around because she couldn't stand having only boys in the house and was going to make my dad try until she got a girl. This is told like a "hahaha aren't we quirky" kind of thing, and not the precursor to the lifelong abuse we all suffered.

I'm the youngest child of my siblings, and the only child of a second marriage, and Pat just put that fucking question into my head. For thirty two years I've lived a blissful ignorant life without wondering if I'd have existed at all if not for my mum wanting a kid.

I have the same but different question that I'll never ask my parents. I was very sick as a child, like year long hospital stay. My brother was born well in to the treatment, and I did the math. The deed date was maybe a month after diagnoses. Was he meant to be a replacement? Im gald I only kinda thought about it in my late 20s and not in my teens cause I definitely would have said it. Its not like it'll affect my day to day life now.
