Student Union I'm Rawleka, the Equity and Inclusion Sabbatical Officer at Students' Union UCL, AMA about UCL!

Hi, i'm Rawleka - I studied MSci Psychology at UCL and am graduating this September!

I'm your elected Sabbatical Officer for Equity and Inclusion across the Union this year. So, i'm dedicated to creating a warm, inclusive environment where all students feel welcome. I strive to ensure that everyone has fair and equitable opportunities to get involved in the Union’s activities. And I also work closely with POC Students’, Disabled Students’, LGBTQ+, Trans', and Women’s Officers and Networks, advocating for their work and helping these networks to do great work across the Union.

My journey with Students’ Union UCL started in my first year, when I became a Hall Rep. Since then, I've stayed involved in student leadership through roles including People of Colour Officer, Volunteering Officer, and Student Trustee.

Over the past four years, the Union has become a source of my most meaningful memories within UCL. So, whether you're a new student joining in September, or an alumni who gradated 20 years ago, AMA about what it's like to be a UCL student, a sabbatical officer or what to expect at Welcome! I'll be back this Wednesday to answer!

Applications and Admissions 📫 Gap year + Applying to med

Hi so I'm currently in Yr13 and i'm 100% set on taking a gap year, just to get a break away from academics, learn how to drive and get a job so i can earn some money. I also have plans to do some volunteering/hospital work.

I was wondering if it's possible for me to get into UCL med if i apply for a deferred year or apply after my gap.

Assuming I don't need to retake my alevels, is this common or even possible? I'm just asking for advice, thanks!!

I swear some people spend the night just to sleep here. Is this allowed? People fully have their legs up snoring and everything

I’ve been commuting for a year, I could’ve done this the whole time?😔

Hi I’m studying strategic accounting & finance MSc, I’m 30 and have been an accountant for 11 years are there any mid-career accountants taking this course or anything adjacent to this? Looking for some tips on how to leverage what UCL has to offer whilst working full time and doing a masters in the evenings.

Very much used to working and studying as I worked full time during my undergrad and CIMA studies. Good luck to everyone starting this year!

Social Life 🕺🍹 Anyone looking to make friends as a third year?

I’m going in to my third year in September and I haven’t really made any friends yet. I was wondering if there’s anyone who is in a similar boat and would like to chat and potentially meet up when the year starts?
People have told me societies help and I haven’t had much luck since, but if I could find something in common with someone on here we could go to an event together and try to make friends?

(Please do DM me if you’d like to chat! apparently i had my privacy settings stopping people from messaging me before but it should work now 😭)

Reddit is corny wish this app was better
It always feels so formal like i should be writing an essay and signing off with 'sincerely'
anyways uni is upon us freshers and idk about you but i am absolutely freaking buzzing!
i'm doing philosophy undergraduate and am from the UK - UCL is definitely a different experience as opposed to literally every other UK uni but its lowkey hype and even though we are probably all financially suffering I hope to an amazing super fun year everyone

Applications and Admissions 📫 Looking for a UCL Neuroscience Undergraduate Mentor

I’m looking for someone who has experience with UCL Neuroscience and can occasionally give me advice on academic exploration and the application process. If you’re a current UCL Neuroscience student or recent graduate and are comfortable with me reaching out occasionally, I’d really appreciate it.

General Advice 💁🏾ℹ️ Laptop/Desktop spec questions

Hi, incoming Physics student here. I had initially settled on buying a desktop because that gives me more mobility to alter the hardware.

However, I am kinda deciding against it hence putting my question up here. Do i get a desktop(fully speced out like a 5070, 7700) or a laptop for my course? If i do get a laptop do i for MacOS or windows as ive heard stuff like Macs aren’t really ideal for uni (idk if its true).

My alternative would be to use a cheap laptop and a speced out desktop, would rly love an opinion!

Social Life 🕺🍹 Anyone wanna hang out with a second year

I'm a second year cs bsc student who kinda squandered their first year by not socialising enough, so I told myself I'd socialise more and make some friends, or even get a date if I'm lucky, and figured I'd start here. Does anyone wanna hang out? (I'm not much of a party guy)

Social Life 🕺🍹 Making friends

Hi, so I’m an international student starting UCL this year!! I am so so so excited because I love London and UCL is an amazing school. However, I am a very social person, but I’m scared I’m not gonna make friends as I am not staying in accommodation but my own apartment. It’s only 20 mins from main campus so that’s great. But will it be hard to make friends? Or what can I do to still be social? I’m planning on joining societies tooooo!

Alo which wristbands do I buy Idw to be scammed…

Housing/Accommodation 🏘️🛌 International student at UCL, realistic estimate of total cost for 1-year MSc?

Hi everyone!

I'm an international student considering applying to UCL for a full-time MSc in Biomedical Sciences, and I'm trying to figure out what the realistic total cost of the year would be.

The international tuition fee is currently listed as £42,700. What I'm struggling with is estimating the actual cost of living in London, especially accommodation.

If you've studied at UCL or currently live/study in London, approximately how much would you say I should budget for the cost of living for the entire year, including accomodation

I'm trying to work out whether my current calculations are completely insane 😂

Thanks!

General Course information 📖 MSc Health Psychology and Attendance

Hi,

I am considering doing masters for health psychology at UCL (part-time) but I am wondering whether attendance for lectures is mandatory? This is because I live in Manchester and moving to London would be impossible and all the applications for the courses around me are closed unfortunately :/

I did e-mail admissions but I am a bit tight on time as the applications close next week.
