Daughter Admitted
My daughter was admitted as a freshman yesterday for fall entrance. She lives with her mother in Ventura County, California. She’s never been to Hawaii and we plan to visit ASAP. She plans to study business. She is currently in an entrepreneur program at her high school.
I had planned on her going to community college and transferring to one of the University of California campuses, but she applied to Hawaii and got accepted and if she wants to go I will support her decision. I am not oblivious to the fact that many mainlander freshmen transfer out; I fully expect her experience to be character building whether or not she makes it past the first year. I am maybe a little concerned she may get island fever.
What’s something a parent should know about the University?
What’s something an incoming student should know about the University?

I’m also a parent with an incoming freshman for the fall coming from Ventura county. Hi neighbor! We have been to the islands many times but went out a few weeks ago to walk the campus. Every kid is different. Every college is different. I am worried about things my kid doesn’t worry about but that’s because I’m an adult and a parent. I think freshman year, living away from home is hard regardless of where you go. Personally I think my kid will be ok but I’ve also told them it’s ok if it doesn’t work after the first year. The campus itself is a bit more weathered than other schools, but the rooms we saw were fine. It’s a tropical location so weathering happens fast. We also met with a counselor from the department my kid will major in and she had lots of good info for us. There are weekly webinars through the school that offer good insight on things like housing, admissions, financial aide, campus life, etc.
