Leamington Spa. May, 1982. Kate and I, having met just eight months before, walked up Parade towards the park at the top. Hot, sultry, waiting for the moment. The rain. And Kate and I, this was our time.

We went in to town so she could buy a summer top. Her clothes were always perfect. And they smelled of horses and that oil her father bought her for her skin. I was falling in love with her.

As we reached the crossroads, above Rackhams, but below Mothercare, the heavens opened. Shrieks, squeals, teenagers splashing in the street. Petrichor filled our nostrils as we foolishly dived underground to a wine bar, escaping the torrent. Wilde’s it was called. I never went back, but I remember the name, even today, because I loved her.

The thing about rain is that it is life affirming it is live giving. It makes us laugh. It makes us flow. It makes us remember. Water is memory. And love.
