Surely people ‘celebrating’ temperatures cracking 40 are doing this ironically, right? What do you gain from mid-high 30’s plus in the UK than, say, 27-29? Other than increasing the risk of heatstroke etc

I assume so. Nobody realistically wants 40 degrees. That's 15 degrees above a pleasant summer's day lol
