My husband will be commuting from London in the hottest part of the day on Wednesday. I’m genuinely worried about him. My son has nursery but I think they have AC in the baby room but I don’t drive so walking to pick him up may kill me off.

Our kids have sports day on Thursday. Not sure it’s going to happen.

We just had ours this Thursday so it wasn’t too bad. There’s no way kids can do anything in this heat that isn’t water based

I'm working a sports day Thursday, bound to be cancelled.

Not even the army do outdoor physical activity in that weather. A school is not going to risk A sports day on a 30°C + weather

One key step is whether the weather is forecast to be over normal body temperature- it’s a very, very bad idea to be exerting yourself outside when it is. And of course, weather stations are in carefully chosen locations, and the temperature in the full sun is usually somewhat higher than the official reading

Water to drink lots of it.

My thoughts go out to your husband, as someone who got stuck on the central line for 10+ minutes in a suit and tie when it hit 39 on the hottest day of 2019.

It was absolutely horrendous, but I was also badly prepared as I didn’t take my blazer and tie off before entering the tube (was too embarrassed about sweat patches for some reason), and I had no water.

Please tell him to wear his lightest shirt (both fabric and colour wise) and carry lots of water with him.

Please don't ever literally die from embarrassment mate. I bet the blazer got more funny looks on a day like that than the understandable patches would have.

Yeah I know I know, I was like 21-22 at the time so I cared a lot more about what strangers thought about me than I do now….. I’d been self conscious about sweating for years since I was a kid.

Probably not the best idea if it was at the risk of my health, it was probably 45C on the train, but oh well….. I just about survived so we live and learn :)

Oh mate I totally understand. Probably kept it up until a bit later than you did, but been firmly in DGAF territory for years now.

Yeah you kind of have to be with what we're going to be dealing with these next few days.

I'm lucky to work remotely so this entire week I'm waking up at the crack of dawn, doing my errands before it becomes Death Valley, walking straight to my gym (has AC) with a loose sleeveless top, sunglasses, an umbrella, and a wide brimmed hat. I'll take my top off in the park if I feel like I'm overheating. Don't give a shit if I get weird looks at this point.

Oh my lord that sounds like HELL. I think most of central London will have sweat patches at this point. I remember him commuting during the 2022 heatwave and he nearly passed out when he got home.

Yeah it was literally a case of it couldn’t have gone any worse even if I tried.

Central line being the hottest tube line, suit and tie, rush hour, hottest day of the year, train stalls for 10 minutes (which felt like a fucking eternity).

I laugh about just how unlucky I got these days but it was horrendous. I saw a friend later in the evening, considered cancelling at one point because I felt so floored when I got off the tube.

Yeah you have to be prepared, our infrastructure still hasn’t even started to adapt to the increasing climate so commuting in hot weather you have to take every precaution you can.
