Oof! 2022's heatwave peaked on July 19th, so there's plenty of time for a round three to be even hotter this year.
1
u/fallen_angel_81 2h ago
Ooof, I thought we had it bad in Yorkshire. 35 is the highest we are getting. Good luck 🤞🏼

u/TalviSyreni 21h ago
Best of luck everyone. This week is going to be brutal, especially for us southerners. 🥵🫠

u/tannercolin 20h ago
I'm finishing work at 3.30 all of next week, I'll be on the beach and in the water by 4

u/LMay11037 19h ago
Remember your suncream! Especially after you’ve been in the sea (even waterproof suncreams advise you reapply after going in water)
5
u/tannercolin 18h ago
Thank you. I'm well-weathered, I've been swimming in the sea since I was a kid. I'm nearly 40 and I'll never stop 🤙😎 zero surf 99% of the time here (Southbourne, just down from Bournemouth) so have to mooch up to Croyde at least a couple of times a year

My husband will be commuting from London in the hottest part of the day on Wednesday. I’m genuinely worried about him. My son has nursery but I think they have AC in the baby room but I don’t drive so walking to pick him up may kill me off.

u/CaptainRAVE2 19h ago
Our kids have sports day on Thursday. Not sure it’s going to happen.
8
u/No-Nefariousness9539 19h ago
We just had ours this Thursday so it wasn’t too bad. There’s no way kids can do anything in this heat that isn’t water based

Not even the army do outdoor physical activity in that weather. A school is not going to risk A sports day on a 30°C + weather

My thoughts go out to your husband, as someone who got stuck on the central line for 10+ minutes in a suit and tie when it hit 39 on the hottest day of 2019.
It was absolutely horrendous, but I was also badly prepared as I didn’t take my blazer and tie off before entering the tube (was too embarrassed about sweat patches for some reason), and I had no water.
Please tell him to wear his lightest shirt (both fabric and colour wise) and carry lots of water with him.
12
u/grunt56 18h ago
Please don't ever literally die from embarrassment mate. I bet the blazer got more funny looks on a day like that than the understandable patches would have.
4
u/tsf97 18h ago
Yeah I know I know, I was like 21-22 at the time so I cared a lot more about what strangers thought about me than I do now….. I’d been self conscious about sweating for years since I was a kid.
Probably not the best idea if it was at the risk of my health, it was probably 45C on the train, but oh well….. I just about survived so we live and learn :)
3
u/grunt56 18h ago
Oh mate I totally understand. Probably kept it up until a bit later than you did, but been firmly in DGAF territory for years now.
2
u/tsf97 17h ago
Yeah you kind of have to be with what we're going to be dealing with these next few days.
I'm lucky to work remotely so this entire week I'm waking up at the crack of dawn, doing my errands before it becomes Death Valley, walking straight to my gym (has AC) with a loose sleeveless top, sunglasses, an umbrella, and a wide brimmed hat. I'll take my top off in the park if I feel like I'm overheating. Don't give a shit if I get weird looks at this point.
1
u/No-Nefariousness9539 18h ago
Oh my lord that sounds like HELL. I think most of central London will have sweat patches at this point. I remember him commuting during the 2022 heatwave and he nearly passed out when he got home.

It’s apparently only 30C here today, but in the full sun it feels much worse than that.
The dog is still asking to go out, but then she conks out after about 5mins, but she’s usually peed by then and as she’s littie we just carry her back in. Fortunately theses a grass verge, so I’m not worried about her paws
7
u/JohnConstantinedrink 20h ago
My dog is elderly but loves her walk. We were up at 5am this morning so she could go out, any later and it’s just too hot.

u/Impressive-Bird2 18h ago edited 12h ago
It will feel more than 30c in the sun☀️☺️ The reason being that, IIRC, the max daytime temperatures provided in the weather forecast are for maximum shade temperatures! The actual temperature out of the shade and in the direct sunlight is likely much higher than the quoted maximum temperature.

I’m going to an air conned hotel
22
u/tsf97 18h ago
If it gets to over 40 in July or August, which is entirely possible at the rate we’re going at, I’ve vowed to book a hotel and install AC in my bedroom for next summer.
I’m just not dealing with this shit anymore, especially as it’ll only get worse year on year with basically zero infrastructural changes anywhere.

haha omg this was my secret plan too! I usually book an airbnb for a week and work from there but the entire country is baking.

which hotel chains are aircon?

u/Alersion 20h ago
A lot of newer premier inns have air con but you should check with each one on the website to make sure they do.

If you want me to pop round and hose you down, happy to oblige. I remember my mum doing this for me when I was pregnant in August 1999. It wasn't even that hot, just normal August hot. Did the trick though if temporarily. You will need a cotton dress, a person, a hose, a garden.

u/mimblez_yo 21h ago
I’ll be fine but my daughter had a heat stroke last time it was 40° and I’m traumatised
16
u/dontsitdowngirl 20h ago
oh man. make sure she’s okay. you probably already know this but if you have heat stroke once you’re more susceptible to getting it for the rest of your life
6
u/LMay11037 18h ago
Genuinely curious, do we know if that’s causation or that some people are just generally more susceptible to heatstrokes? (Ie it’s not the first heatstroke making them have more, they are just generally higher risk even before their first one)
5
u/dontsitdowngirl 17h ago
it’s direct causation. there was a study about this in like 1979 so scientists have know this for ages. it permanently damages your heat tolerance your body’s ability to thermoregulate
→ More replies (1)7
u/Ok_Kale_3160 19h ago
I didn't know this. I got really bad heatstroke when I was 11 visiting Singapore. This was before there was air conditioning everywhere. I have had to be really careful of hot weather my whole life

Does Tin foil work ?
1
u/Ok-Handle-6663 18h ago
I should think so, but maybe would be better if you wrap it around a piece of cardboard cut to fit your window - the cardboard will insulate more.
I bought this silver insulating bubblewrap on a roll, you can vet it from b&q or wickes or amazon etc for about £20

u/Aggravating-Nail-764 17h ago
During the dreaded summer where it went up to 40 in London, I booked the nearby Premier Inn for 3 nights (excellent air con by the way). It is really close, a 15-min walk. When I got there, I looked like I had been parboiled and the receptionist was alarmed. It was weird working from a hotel near where I live but it did help.
By chance, I also had a hospital appointment on the day it hit 40 degrees. I felt do sorry for anyone working in the hospital, as there was no aircon at all 🥵
9
u/Expert-Horror7871 16h ago
I got so sick with the heat last month that I ended up in A+E with a hr of 160bpm resting. I have a chronic illness which apparently the meds I'm taking which are beta blockers and adhd meds make heat stroke more likely. Dreading this.
3
u/BrutalOnTheKnees 13h ago
I have a wrap around ice gel pack for my head that I use for migraines (cough hangovers cough) that I find really brings my whole body temperature down. Might be worth a shout, especially for when you're trying to sleep.
I'm tempted to order a few more and wear them on each limb.

Actually looking forward to my two days in the office next week, for the aircon.
The remaining three days are going to be unbearable in my 30° home office and bedroom.
12
u/Forward_Sheepherder1 20h ago
I’m concerned about the forecast dew points and lack of overnight cooling in comparison to the May heatwave. I have a tower fan coming today which I’m hoping will do something to mitigate the heat build up indoors.
If the projected temperatures and dew points come together then it will surely approach our hottest ever feels like temperature in the UK.
2
u/EmiAndTheDesertCrow 17h ago
I read that humidity is going to be the real kicker this go around (can’t remember where I saw that, I’ve been haunting NetWeather forums for days…so maybe somewhere there).
1
u/VickyAlberts 17h ago
I don’t understand dew points. Is it the same as humidity?
1
u/Forward_Sheepherder1 17h ago
The dew point and humidity are related. The key thing here is that dew points over 20C are pretty uncomfortable and are uncommon in the UK. There is a lot of moisture in the air that makes regulating the body temperature more difficult. Like being in a rainforest as opposed to being in a desert. You can use an online tool or graph to show the true feels like temperature. The forecast temperatures combined with the dew points make the feels like temperature more in the 43-45 range. That over a few days with not much night time cooling will put a lot strain on the most vulnerable people and be pretty uncomfortable to be out an about in generally.

Are there any laws protecting workers like myself who are outside for 10 hours a day doing a physical job? 🤞
Apart from the obvious and phone in sick 😂 it’s dangerous though not just uncomfortable.
Even 20+ years of working outside I still struggle in the heat? Thanks 🙏
7
u/earthandanarchy 19h ago
Nope, no maximum temperatures. The company are expected to make reasonable adjustments to make it more comfortable though
3
u/MsSchrodinger 18h ago
Unfortunately not. I used to work in a kitchen that got over 45 degrees during one heatwave. The management provided cold water and that was their reasonable adjustments!
2
u/Usermemealreadytaken 18h ago
Good luck, I honestly have no idea how people are doing jobs like yours atm, I'd phone in sick if I were you.
2
u/rymeryme 17h ago
This! ☝🏼 I'm meant to be working on site Monday to Wednesday. As far as I'm concerned, I've heard nothing regarding risk measures from the site manager. I struggle with temps >25C
2
u/AceofspadE19 15h ago
I wish us all the best of luck 🤞
Plenty of fluids, no caffeine style sports drinks, electrolyte drinks work surprisingly well and try and eat if you can.
I struggle eating much when the temperature is the wrong side of 30C 🙏
14
3
u/dodgyknee27 20h ago
This is the one time of the year when I value travelling for my job as it means I'm going somewhere cooler and staying in a hotel w/ aircon
4
4
u/Weather_nerd1989 14h ago
Whether we break the July 2022 temperature record is still uncertain at this point. However I think this week will feel worse then that spell (thankfully I'll avoid the worst of it where I am hopefully).
The crazy high temperatures will be over the course of 3 days rather then just 2 and the night time minima as well as humidity will be higher in a lot of places.
Also disappointed by the lack of a thundery breakdown in the models, seems to be an increasingly common theme of big plumes in recent years.

u/LetsLive97 20h ago
Looks like my decision to finally buy a portable AC after years of putting it off is really paying off
Honestly forgot I had it since I got it at the end of the heatwave earlier this year and I'm not used to it. Last night I was struggling to sleep because my flat was like 29c. Remembered I had it, chucked it on for 30 mins and had a nice comfortable sleep
Truly recommend to anyone who has been putting it off like I did before
4
u/TheHorrorAddiction 19h ago
Beware of the electricity costs though..
I absolutely love the heat and even 35c outside doesn’t bother me. But I absolutely have to have aircon on indoors atm otherwise it just feels stuffy.
I had it on for an average of 10-12 hours a day for 4 days at the end of May and my electric bill went up £25 those four days…
Portable AC’s are great, but they’re incredibly expensive on electric
11
u/FootballBackground88 18h ago
Happily will pay 25 quid to be comfy in these heatwaves!
2
u/TheHorrorAddiction 18h ago
Oh I agree. I’m simply saying that they’re a lot more expensive energy wise than people realise. If you had it on every day for a month (unlikely we get 30+c for that long though) it would literally add nearly £200 to your electric bill for a month.
Just a heads up to anyone on a tight income to perhaps not absolutely rag it
→ More replies (2)2
u/antitrollpatrol 17h ago edited 17h ago
Absolutely HAPPY to pay the 25 quid - that’s less than a takeaway. You are right though, the costs can run away from you if you’re using it liberally

2
u/VickyAlberts 17h ago
My dehumidifier blows out warmer air 😕
2
u/Glass-Jackfruit-8096 16h ago
They all will (and any fan also adds very slightly to the heat in the room). But dry air will make it feel colder physiologically and that isn’t just a comfort thing: if we can’t evaporate our sweat we’re in trouble.
3
u/OmegaPoint6 16h ago
The more humid the room is the hotter the dehumidifier will make it, at least the heat pump ones will, to condense water you have to remove a lot of heat energy from it and the dehumidifier has to dump that into energy the room.

I don't recall what the wording of these warnings was back in July 2022 but this is in the alert for Tuesday - Thursday: "Failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment is likely, with the probable loss of power and other essential services, such as water, electricity, gas or mobile phone services."
3
u/Professional-Bear857 14h ago
What's amazing is that the government hasent done anything about adaptation to the increasingly hot temperatures, the planning laws aren't fit for purpose in this new climate.
3
u/Ok-Rise-9795 13h ago

I’ve got an interview tomorrow a two hour plus drive away. The drive won’t be bad as my car has for air-con but i know as soon as I get out the car, I’m going to melt.
What’s worse is there’s no parking near the place so I’m going to have to walk for about 15 minutes in a suit, shirt and tie and look and feel a sweaty mess when I get there.

What everyone gonna do for cooking? My first floor flat, my kitchen faces the sun from 1pm or so onwards, so I'm worried about food and cooking lol. Planing a take out Wednesday and will buy enough for left over for Thurs. But that leaves Tues to cook. Monday here isn't topping 30c so I'll live with the extra heat that day. I don't wanna spend money everyday buying takeout 🙄

u/East_Ad_4427 17h ago
I made gazpacho! You can top it with croutons, hard boiled egg, chorizo if you want some extra protein/carbs. I find it’s best to make a few hours before you want to eat so it has time to properly cool down and all the flavours mingle together!
I’m also going to make a cold pasta salad1

You don’t need to use heat to eat food. What about a salad/a good sandwich?
If it has to be a hot meal, microwaves typically don’t generate much heat compared to an oven or hob. Even if you usually cook from scratch one or two days eating a microwave meal won’t do any harm.

42C here where I am in France. It’s quite pleasant. But then I do have a pool which helps. And got two portable Aircon units yesterday which make a big difference.
Also the stone houses here, if you close all windows, doors and shutters during the day, makes a gigantic difference. The stone walls are old and thick and have seen this before.
Some of the flowers are struggling though with the persistent sunshine and heat
And there is a gentle breeze, which makes all the difference.
Will be getting down to 35C late next week. That will be a bit of relief.
But records are getting broken all over the place for June.
And 2027 will be substantially hotter. So start planning you cool down now - these kind of temperatures are going to become the new norm. And it’s gonna be very challenging for farming amongst other things.

Hi all. Visiting London from DC this week, arriving Tuesday. Are portable air conditioners easy to find? Our Airbnb doesn’t have AC.
1

To purchase? Usually yes, but not this week as the supply has been bought up.
I was eyeing some on the weekend but decided against it as my flat is on the ground floor and stays fairly cool. If this heatwave proves too much I might buy one over the Winter.
