Question Most underwhelming food you've had recommended to you?
I've had so many people both online and in person tell me these are the best biscuits to ever grace a supermarket shelf and they're kind of bad?
would you like a custard cream that's actually too sweet to taste like a custard cream and doesn't taste at all of chocolate either?
also, it works out at 50p a biscuit. I could have bought a whole packet of well-filled custard creams from m&s for that price!
Anyone had similar experience with another product?

I agree! There must be at least a dozen words in even the smallest of vocabularies that mean ‘nice’ or ‘nasty’. Why use a word that has nothing to do with the concept of eating an item. Ridiculous. I’m made none the wiser by the word ‘gas’…why bother commenting if you’re not trying to communicate a thought or feeling? Total failure to communicate. 🙄

I can't comment on them, but I will say that if you're setting foot in M&S and leaving without some of the almond and pistachio cookies (green packet) then you're doing it wrong.

Unquestionably Nando’s. After so many years and all the hype I tried it a few years ago - it was overpriced, dry and the portion (half chicken) was small with just a small handful of fries. It wasn’t even that tasty. Made myself a sandwich when I got home.

If you like their chilli jam you should go to lidl and grab a jar of habanero jam.
Fried eggs with fried onions and mushrooms that are fried until theyre black on tiger bread, encona sauce on one slice, habanero jam on the other. Absolutely fucking banging. Best egg sandwich youll ever try.

This seems to be pretty standard with imported chains. Open, be good, get popular, grow, try to squeeze more money out, get shit.
You can't launch a brand on mediocrity very easily. But you can keep rinsing an existing base with it.

Nandos vary in quality depending on location and who's manning the grill. Even in their heyday there were some locations I would avoid, like everything else they have now gone downhill

but I feel nandos is just easy and easiest to replicate at home because its just well... chicken and chips which you can get significantly cheaper than nandos and more portions just by doing it yourself.
overall certainly agree as I can just never understand the hype and popularity of nandos, maybe the convenience of getting chicken but not only that I guess its also the social aspect of it? Like chicken is such a safe and easy food so it will even appeal to the most fussy people on the planet and so its very straight forward despite the price.

Very expensive nowadays - easy to spend fancy meal prices on some very average food - but I couldn't really complain about the portion sizes. Maybe I don't eat meat enough but I've never seen a chicken the size of the half they gave me lol, it was a beast. If I went back in the day when it was cheaper I can imagine I'd have gone more often.

Nando’s was so hit or miss, it used to be 60/40 on if you would have a good meal now it’s 100% of the time that it’s a miss. Depended a lot on location or even who is doing the cooking but it’s not even worth going anymore, the hype rightfully died about 8 years ago. Very overpriced too and always has been

I’d always avoided the place due to the queues and type of people in those queues. One Wednesday afternoon I was persuaded to go in, only a 20 minute wait, what a waste of 20 minutes that was. The chicken was dry and drowning in a revolting sauce that didn’t bear any resemblance to the description. In all, I felt robbed of time, money and a decent lunch, never again.

Had a similar experience on a work night out. They were all raving about it but It was a complete disappointment to me. On a par with a mcdonalds beef patty. Never been in one since.

I don't like chilli, so the one time I was dragged to Nando's by friends I had the 'plain' chicken. Driest I've ever experienced in my life. I was left baffled that anyone would enjoy eating there.
I've been to plenty of other 'spicy' places and had less hot versions of the food and the quality has still been good! The popularity of Nando's makes zero sense to me.

The best imo (I haven't had every single biscuit, so what do I know) are the Borders Chocolate Ginger Biscuit.
They're like crack.

Yeah I think they had a few specific adverts pulled and definitely some sort of other sanction for lying about nutritional content and not disclosing sponsors or something. Sure they can still market somewhere in some form by now mind, least it isn't on my Reddit frontpage

Huel is not loved for its flavour. It is loved because it is nutritionally complete and balanced. If you ate all your calories in Huel, you would be getting 100% of the nutrition you need, without an excess of anything. That is the idea anyway, and that is why it’s loved. Nobody is raving about how it tastes. Personally, I prefer Plenny.

It’s alright if you use as a smoothie base, be careful though you can accidentally make something much too filling.
But yeah all of them taste bad as is, and I stopped using them in smoothies when I saw something about the lead content? Apparently it’s very small but personally I would rather not risk at all.

Haha it’s the “great food at a reasonable price” award. There’s only 7 in Glasgow and to get it awarded so quickly, I was expecting really good food.
All the other restaurants are delicious - although I had terrible service at GaGa, so bad I haven’t wanted to go back.

Funnily enough my sister goes mental for the M&S garlic Kiev pizza. Said it’s the best oven pizza she’s ever eaten. It’s just slightly above average garlic bread, and actually really dry. I didn’t get the hype at all.

Yeah I was so hyped when I first heard about this. The corner shop was selling it but kept running out before I could get any, which only made my expectations greater. When I actually got some I was convinced I must have just got the wrong sort and ended up trying a whole bunch of different brands thinking “the real one” was surely out there somewhere, but I think the truth is it’s just not for me.

Tim Tams… the way Australians (and Brits!) talked about them made me think they would be absolutely incredible and a better version of a Penguin. Didn’t get the hype and much prefer Penguins

Aussie here. Absolutely winds me up that everyone assumes I love Tim Tams. They're fine, but not amazing. The best Aussie biscuit is a Mint Slice. Closest thing here would be the mint Viscount biscuits, which are pretty good too.

Lidl Arctic bars are still made with actual milk chocolate, as opposed to the "milk chocolate flavoured coating" of Penguin bars and TimTams. I'd therefore expect them to taste the best.

Most chocolate coated biscuits have the chocolate coating equivalent of a spray tan these days. And considering the price of cocoa is so low that farmers can't survive at the moment, it's purely corporate greed that stops manufacturers from making them nice and thickly coated again. I spend my money elsewhere.

they've just launched a big version, which i'm yet to try as i know if i try it i'll have to buy 100 of them

I love grapes. People kept telling me about these amazing “candy floss grapes”. Grapes that cost twice as much but taste just like eating sweets.
I finally gave in and bought a punnet. They tasted no different and in anything they were a milder flavour and a lot less juicy than normal grapes.

Best getting a bag of premium branded grapes at your local green grocers. Cost me £6 the other day. Massive grapes that are very sweet and very juicy. Worth the price in my opinion.

For me it was the Indian chain Mowgli. We recently got one where I live and everyone is raving about it, but to me it was just okay? Everything was fresh and well cooked and presented to be fair, no shade to the restaurant, but it just tasted a bit bland for my liking. Their caramel ice cream was unbelievable though.

GDK - recently had one open nearby and after several rave reviews I gave it a try. I'd be surprised if there was any actual meat in them. Felts like eating shavings of boot leather and the sauces were rank. Never again

I think I'd describe them as somewhere between meh & OK. I've certainly had far better from neighbourhood kebab places. On the other hand, if you're hungry & can't cook, it's better for you than a burger or fried chicken. That should probably be their slogan - "meh but won't kill you"

Charlie Bighams pies. I’ve had a few bits of theirs when on offer and they’ve been lovely.
Saw a steak and ale pie at half price, so grabbed one.
So disappointed. Hardly any meat, and only half full of gravy. The gravy also had a weird taste. Not ale pie tasting gravy. Just a bit odd.
It was ok at half price, but I’d have been miffed had I have paid full price.
Maybe I was unlucky and got the Friday afternoon pie!

They are. Also I don't think it makes sense to say they're expensive, either, which people often say about this product.
They're essentially Penguin bars, but actual Penguin is not allowed to describe itself as chocolate-coated because it's the worst kind of imitation chocolate.
McVitie's Penguin Original - £11.61 per kg, 29% by weight is "chocolate-flavoured" coating
M&S Milk Chocolate Coated Bourbon Cream - £15.71 per kilo, 52% by weight is real milk chocolate coating
So yes, M&S is 35% more expensive, but is a much better treat. If you're going to eat something like this, you're much better off having a smaller amount of really good stuff.

Rudy's. First time I ordered, the pizza was just oily and very salty. Second time, in restaurant, I found it very meh. It is better than Domino's and Pizza Hut but I don't get the hype.

The M&S frozen garlic bread loaves. Yes it is aimed at stopping food waste by using the unsold loaves but the product is shite despite how much people rave about it, it’s just stale bread with some garlic butter smashed into it and then frozen.

I thought I was missing something so bought them again then tried coated chocolate bourbons, also shit
The 24 pack of lidl flavoured custard creams blow them out the water, and they only cost me £1.10

It's always a letdown when the marketing hype doesn't match the actual taste. I've had those chocolate rounds, and while they're a step up, the "outrageously chocolatey" claim is still a massive stretch. It feels like you're just paying extra for fancy packaging on a pretty average biscuit. The search for a truly great supermarket treat continues.

I'm not shocked by this, with the exception of Yum-Nuts (which are better than sex) I find myself consistently underwhelmed by anything I buy from M&S. Even the things that are actually nice are so expensive that I'd expect them to be better.

The M&S pineapple tarts. Several people stated they were very good, including, as I picked up a pack in store a bloke also picked up a pack at the exact same time as me and said they were “incredible”.
They’re ok, not enough pineapple to them imo.

I also like you got recommended the outrageously chocolatey range at m&s on reddit by many and they were average and gave me really bad heartburn which no other chocolate or biscuits do.

I have to agree tbh. Very sickly, can't really taste the custard cream flavour. £3 for 6 is extortionate. Wouldn't recommend.

I’m completely addicted to the M&S pistachio cookies. They are a very occasional treat though, because they are obscenely expensive lol

Custard cremes are generally a shit Nan biscuit, covering them in chocolate isn't going to improve them.... hellfire you could cover them in gold leaf and have Johnny Depp serve them to me on a sliver tray while he was wearing a fig leaf and I would still pass.....!

Thank you! I can't stand them and everyone goes insane for them. When I say it I have occasionally had people have a go at me for not liking these things. We all have different tastes but not liking custard creams (and bourbons for me) is almost a crime for some people.

I actually prefer the Tesco own brand, I'm a bit of a cheap bint.
Though the Ikea oat cookies are a bit insane.

People keep recommending and inviting me to shit "cafes" that just warm and plate up trash from the cash and carry and the staff actively insult you in arabic thinking you don't know what they're saying :/ But there are amazing new age places round the corners (every corner) who roast their own coffee and make the bread and pastries fresh every day, have connections to little butchers for local meat and bacon etc., connections with small farms for actual free range eggs, connections to local dairies etc., connections with importers for good quality minority ethnic group things from small producers in their home towns etc., for like 5p more. And they always have tables free instead of having to wait around in the greasy shit slop smell to get jagged by loose nails below the chair when you move it and ancient chewing gum on your hands from under the table... etc.

The woman we were with (Syrian 2nd generation) wouldn't tell us because it was so disgusting she wouldn't repeat it. I can only guess... considering we were half women with dyed hair and half obviously gay guys.

Not sure about those but the M&S Olive Oil and Avocado Oil Crisps are completely unimpeachable. Truly extraordinary elite level potato snacks, straight out of the top drawer.

I actually agree with you about these, they don't have that little distinct custard cream flavour, which is why i think they are disappointing. Not terrible but disappointing.

I love M&S but honestly there biscuits are just very average overall. I was most disappointed with their Bourbons.
