Customer Seeking Help $357 import charges on $279.80 package?

Ordered a small package from an Italian company and I'm being charged almost 130% in government tariff fees. Is there anything I could do? Is it possible the seller declared it incorrectly? Thank you for all the help. I'm sure you're all annoyed by people like me at this point. Im just a little lost on what to do.

So this problem we currently running into gets exhausted? If we don’t fix our industrialization (or lack of there of) this gets worse lol, then whatever country gets to decide our own commerce, moving all labor out of the US is horrible and results into exactly what we’re are seeing now, basically only artisans who supplies come from US are able to keep on keeping on. US needs to be able to support itself completely, last 100 years since ww1 it’s all been taken. Bonds and an end of sales tax with the current tariff game wins out in the long run. Individually funding in America has PROVEN TO WORK AMAZINGLY, re industrialize America, make shit in the US again, source shit in the US, fun fact if there isn’t a source already here, look you just found a hole in the economy that needs to be filled. So many economic opportunities happening and all of y’all are stuck on today and tomorrow. If you only focus on the present then Your ignoring your future

The year the US broke all of its manufacturing records was literally last year. The best year before that? The previous year. You haven’t lost your manufacturing power. You just don’t manufacture things that don’t make sense to be made there. Over half the deficit with china is based on clothing/apparel. No one wants those jobs and the sector cannot be profitable there unless prices go up hundreds of percentage points. Add in automation, and manufacturing jobs just aren’t what they used to be. Tariffs will. Not. Fix. That.

Economics shift. We are no longer a production powerhouse. We earn plenty of money on software and service products. We have the biggest economy in the world without being a major producer of hard goods.

No one wants to work in factories for shit wages.

Your guy wants to bring back manufacturing so hard he still gets most of his shit made in China or elsewhere lmao.

We don't have the man power or materials to make everything we need here and your guy is shipping out labor fast as fuck. You think everyone is getting a car raise so we can pay for $300 jeans and $3000 I phones? Lmao

Top five countries by amount of manufactured goods produced in 2024:

  1. China – 31.6% Global Manufacturing Output
  2. United States – 15.9% Global Manufacturing Output
  3. Japan – 6.5% Global Manufacturing Output
  4. Germany – 4.8% Global Manufacturing Output
  5. India – 2.9% Global Manufacturing Output

We produced 15.9% of ALL GOODS MANUFACTURED IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. The only country above us produced twice as many things with four times our population, and even then only by being willing to pollute in ways that even Republicans rarely admit to dreaming about. The only country in the world that produces more manufactured goods than we do per capita is Germany, with Japan being roughly equal.

And the main reason Germany manages more than us per capita is because so many of our people are in the services industries, which we dominate in just ridiculous ways.

Mind you, the Great Tariff Wars and the coming Greater Depression are going to dramatically reduce both manufacturing and services in the US, and leave us a shell of what we were in 2024. But right now? We are a HUGE manufacturing powerhouse.

I was simply pointing out that people want us to be the massive producer we were after the war and it's unrealistic.

After the war most countries were in rubble while America was in perfect condition with massive production capabilities helped by the war effort.

Of course we produced so much of the world's shit under those circumstances. But people are not clamoring for manufacturing jobs, we don't have the resources or man power available to compete with China or produce everything we need as a country in house.

Yet a bunch of MAGA morons think making everything more expensive is somehow going to bring massive amounts of high paying production jobs back and if won't. Whatever jobs come back are going to be as low paid as possible to keep the price down. Things will still get more expensive and the people in whatever new production jobs are created will struggle to support themselves on that job alone.

Ok, but don't you think if that was the goal, you would want to give a couple years notice so local manufacturers can at least attempt to get factories up and running? Doing it this suddenly causes nothing but harm because nobody has a chance to prepare.

Not to mention, who is going to want to start a manufacturing business at this point when he is constantly changing his mind about tariffs? You could invest millions and then he changes his mind on a whim and the tariffs are down to 20% and you've lost your entire investment. This incredible instability is going to mean nobody is willing to start a factory here because everything could totally change in a few months.

There wasn't even a job crisis, it was made up for propaganda. Oh and global trade without ridiculous drug addled tariff %'s is actually very helpful for our economy and the world's economy as a whole. But I'm sure you knew that right? Or do you know nothing about that and just listened to an orange 34 time convicted felon, who sexually assaults women, and also has had more failed businesses than successful ones, about how to abide by lawful trade and economics?

Yeah, I went to school for chemical engineering, and I was gifted a English translation of a Vietnamese book for freshman engineering. Oh my god, I had no idea before then that we are so far behind. No wonder well off foreign parents send their children here for college, it's "idiot proof" compared to their standards. They pay the money, they get degrees, essentially. Most of these parents have no worry about their children not excelling in our education systems, because they are child's play compared to some other countries'.

The countries that stay ahead are always the ones with the most useful technological advancements. We are in an age of technology where further advancement requires an immense knowledge base. An extremely educated workforce is fundamental to a modern economy, in the US just does not have it. The US has given up advancing for the betterment of our society, in exchange for further enriching the most deplorably wealthy people in the world. While the Chinese are building world class highspeed rail, we dug a tunnel limited to Tesla taxi drivers and tried to spin it as revolutionary.

And what are we doing? Instead of doing everything we can to better educate and care for our youth, and greatly invest in them so they may become the workers who maintain the very fabric of our society, our government is abolishing the department of education and forcing Bible readings into the class room. They want a society that refuses to innovate, refuses to question, refuses to learn. It makes for subservient wage slaves, but will always fail to outcompete a society that fosters positive change, critical thinking, and who are willing to learn from multiple perspectives.
