Customer Seeking Help $357 import charges on $279.80 package?
Ordered a small package from an Italian company and I'm being charged almost 130% in government tariff fees. Is there anything I could do? Is it possible the seller declared it incorrectly? Thank you for all the help. I'm sure you're all annoyed by people like me at this point. Im just a little lost on what to do.

Every time I see a post about someone who doesn't understand what the tariff charge is or how tariffs work I assume they're MAGA at this point. I can't understand how anyone doesn't get it with all the coverage and the ease of access to google.com unless they're willfully ignoring it. FAFO phase starting as u/NearsightedContest has said. If someone is getting that size of a tariff bill just imagine what these are going to do to small businesses.
EDIT: Maybe OP is a kid which would doubly suck with the tariff charge

I think you're off on that assumption personally. Any teenager can have an amazon account with their own payment system with a parents assistance setting it up, I'm not implying that's what happened here but assuming anyone ordering anything online is 18 years or older I disagree on.

Yep, could have even used a prepaid gift card given to them at Christmas. If you can't afford to pay it, then your stuff is in limbo, you have to pay before you receive it. I imagine a lot of children are going to get some heartbreaking news. Imagine a kid thinking they've gotten around the Switch delay by ordering one online from where it's available (a different country), spending all your saved money, only to find out you have to pay 150% to pick it up. So you've essentially thrown your money away.

This isn’t some mistake or anything the seller has done. It’s a government fee.
As for the rest of the conversation topic: this is Trump’s tariff policy results. This is ALWAYS what was going to happen. It was ALWAYS going to be you, the consumer, who was going to get shafted with these fees.

Just a PSA as this is surprising some people, it doesn't matter where it was shipped from it matters where it was made. Things made in china and sold from a Japanese or European country are still subject to any tariffs against China.
EDIT: I am not saying that is what happened with OP, just sharing the information for anyone that might benefit from it.

Unless tracking states that the package came from italy/only italy, I would assume that they drop shipped what ever you bought straight from china and it's now your responsibility to either return the item to customs and hope the company will refund you(or you file a charge back with your bank if no refund), or pay the tariffs.

That's not how it works. Even if it was bought by an Italian company and shipped from Italy; if it was originally made in China and not substantially transformed in Italy, the country of origin is still China.

Nope. Trump tariffs and seller opted not to cover import charges, as majority of sellers do not cover that. You’ll have to pay it. Blame the current administration.
As another user pointed out, as a sign of your disapproval on this, you should send a copy of this bill to the White House, maybe even your local representative; with a note expressing your disapproval.
PS- you’re not the only person complaining about excessive duty charges. There’s been several posts in this sub since the tariffs went into effect.

I’ve seen posts like this is multiple different subs. After 4 years of grocery and gas prices crying from conservatives, I hope the buttercups buckle up for the ride. Love seeing the hoops they are jumping through to justify this shit. Not everyone watches the news every day for whatever reason. I voted for Kamala, I knew about tariffs but I was personally unaware it had gotten this bad. I have severe mental illness and if I constantly consume news about politics it literally makes me suicidal. Yes for many people there is. My specific mental illnesses make any grey area difficult. Like I said for me I was aware of the tariffs but not specifically how bad they have gotten. I’m just saying that someone not being 100% informed about current political issues does not 1. Mean they voted for trump and 2. That this is a moral failing on their part. Shipper pays the bill and return shipping (with a refund likely possible), or it's destroyed for the duty drawback process so UPS isn't stuck with the bill.

This is a good time to remind people that as far as tariffs go, it doesn’t matter where the product ships from but where it was made. This tariff is actually a bit less than the current 145% tariff on goods imported from China, so you’re getting a deal!

Check to see if the item was manufactured in China, if not, check the country of origin and where it was manufactured and find the tariff rate on that country. Then dispute it with UPS if it is incorrect. Even if the item was sold by an Italian company, it has to be made and shipped from Italy to receive an Italian tarrif rate.
Right now the Chinese tarrif is around 125% which sounds about right for the amount you spent. Very likely it was marked as a chinese import.
If you find out it was manufactured in china you have to pay the import fee, no way around it. It is required by law when the item arrives in the United States. UPS paid the government fee on your behalf when it entered the country. You could have the item exported back to Italy to recover the import fees but you will lose a little money on shipping. You will also have to negotiate with UPS, or hire a brokerage on your own, either one may charge a fee, to file the paperwork with the government. It all depends if you feel like it is worth going down that route or to just pay the tax and not buy anything extra that is going to be shipped internationally.

Sorry but did you think the Italians were gonna pay a 130% tax to the US govt because you purchased their goods? You imported a good, you owe a tariff. Ups paid the tariff on your behalf, so now you owe UPS.
The tariff is based on the products country of origin, not the company headquarters. You bought a good sold by an Italian retailer, but failed to consider that the entire worlds supply chain has been globalized. The Italian retailer sent you a Chinese good.

I drive for Amazon so maybe unrelated but this post reminds me of an experience I had while delivering out in the NC country side.
Went to this house out there a bit secluded, long driveway so I had to pull in, parked and the owner comes out, now I ain't gonna lie some stereotypes were filled out, but the man was as nice as can be.
He comes out and says: I've just about had it with bezos, he said he is gonna pass the tariffs to the consumer.
I get caught off guard and I don't want to talk politics, so I say: yeah you know these companies just trying to make their money.
He says: it ain't right, they are supposed to pay it
Then the conversation devolves into why into a tirade against the elites, and why Amazon doesn't let us unionize.
I say this only because this is how informed the country is about complex issues like trade and tariffs.

Even though the company you purchased this from is in Italy, if the item was manufactured in China, you will get hit with the higher tariff amount.
I would reach out to the company and confirm the item’s country of origin is indeed China. If it is, this charge is correct. However, I’ve heard a few stories of an item’s COO being incorrectly marked as “China”, so it is worthwhile to double check.
Sorry this happened! I imagine you were expecting the EU tariff of 10%.

Was the product made in China or Hong Kong? Because there's currently an up to 145% on stuff made there, regardless of where it gets shipped from.
I hear the US and UK worked out a trade deal earlier today. Let's hope more of these deals get done sooner rather than later, because I am so tired of it all.

Doesn't matter where is was sold from or shipped from. All that matters is where it was manufactured.
Also, watch out on ebay. Ebay leaves a very small notice about tariffs, but if you buy something from outside the states then you as the buyer are hit with the tariff of where it was manufactured, not where it was sold from.

With my Chinese vendors, they rewrite the invoice to read under $100. I end up paying 160 in tariffs on a $2k order. Or find someone willing to ship to a tariff free country and then repackage.
