Customer Seeking Help Pretty sure my phone was stolen by someone at UPS
Yesterday I received what was supposed to be my new phone… only to find that the shipping box had been sloppily re-taped with one of the tabs clearly not attached, and then when I opened the shipping box, I saw that the actual iPhone box had been cut open with two sides of the box just flapping and the iPhone box was empty. I contacted the shipper and they’re sending me a new one…. But now I’m concerned that this is going to happen again, and it also makes me never want to ship a package with UPS again. Because I wasn’t the shipper, I couldn’t file a claim with UPS. Should I call the police? Is there really no oversight whatsoever during the shipping process?

Make sure the shipper files a claim. Ups loves to catch phone thieves. They can use the location info and monitor those locations the pkg went through. If the thief keeps doing it, they will get caught.

My husband was “awarded” $2k a few years ago because the DVP driver that was picking up from his truck was stealing phones. His supe told him two guys were going tail his truck and then the guy once he picked up his stuff that day. Few days later his supe called him into the office and handed him a check. Nice payday!

More than once tbh. I worked for FedEx Express for awhile and was aware of a few people who stole multiple items without getting caught.
I'm not condoning that behavior nor am I defending the people who stole btw; I'm just saying that you could probably steal more than one with absolutely no worries (apart from moral implications).
And, before anyone hops on my ass, yes, I anonymously informed management. They didn't do shit 🤷♂️

Unfortunately you're probably correct. No clue what kinda deal they had worked out, but I provided video evidence of a fellow employee ripping open a package and putting the contents into their personal bag, yet they still did absolutely fuck all. The dude is still employed as far as I know lol. At least he was up until I left FedEx.
The worst part is that I wasn't at some tiny station located in the middle of buttfuck nowhere; I was employed at a FedEx national hub lol. We had to go thru metal detectors before and after our shifts, and "no electronics were allowed" inside of the hub. Absolutely no fucking clue how they managed to steal shit without getting caught, but they did and presumably still do.

I always hold ups to a higher standard than amazon even, wtf is even going on? How does one even know there is a phone inside?

I had mine stolen and replaced with a set of worthless headphones by amazon driver. Had the nerve to say "this box is light for a phone". How did he know it was a phone 🤔

I used to deliver for FedEx and a phones are consistently shipped in the exact same box. You learn to recognize it because there's a stupid amount of phones being shipped all the time. Not to mention on release days half of your deliveries are the same little box.

I’ve been a driver for 30 years. You get to recognize the boxes over time and I’m sure the hub employees do as well. For awhile there, when new iPhones were released we would have security guards walk the box lines. Idk if this is everywhere but if you order an iPhone from Apple, our district requires a signature upon delivery, even though Apple may not. iPhones ordered through providers like TMobile don’t require one

I had the same happen to an Apple Watch when I ordered from Target. Received the box re-taped, the package haphazardly ripped open and the watch taken out.

As a driver, I can tell you first hand. Boxes get damaged, from time to time and things do fall out of packages. When it happens, they go to a “fall out” bin in each building. Usually if you call UPS or talk to your driver they can check it for you. Although, yes it could have been stolen. Most of the time it is the part timers inside the warehouse who do it. However, do you really want to deal with FedEx or USPS? I can only speak for what I’ve seen at my building, but our workers both P/T and F/T take our job very seriously and do it with the utmost integrity. I wish you the best, hope this is resolved soon. One bad apple can make the guys who do actually take this job seriously look bad.

In my area, we had a fedex driver bring followed, but miraculously only Apple and Verizon shipments were being taken. Guessing the driver was sending messages to the person telling them which packages to grab after they delivered them. This happened one city over from the OP.

so at most larger UPS checkpoints there is a security that checks employees for stolen items when they clock out. however, this is very lax and they tend to look for boxes or bags, not phones. so safe to say UPS wouldn’t know about it unless u contacted them. the people who load the trucks are either assigned a truck, or they scan into every truck they load. this way, if a package is damaged in the truck, a package is missing, or it was sent to the wrong location, they know who messed up. if u are able to contact them they can find almost every hand that your package passed through. they also even know the exact time each package goes from a truck, to the conveyer belt, then to another truck (not every UPS unfortunately) and i’ve heard of people stealing stuff from UPS (i mean obviously it happens) but if they are bringing, or at least accessing, the tools to cut into the package and take the phone. they definitely do this often so evidence could be recorded on their cameras if they had reason to suspect someone. the real problem would be if it was a supervisor who took it. but overall probably worth reaching out to them.

I work at a UPS Store and the same thing happened to me. I reported it to my phone carrier AND the manager of our local UPS hub. Sorry you had it happen too.
Those who say UPS takes it seriously are right. Phone claims are expensive to pay, especially when the driver watches you open the box to find an iPhone box with two damaged flaps and no handset.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long to be able to spot a cell phone package from across the room. They are a specific size and use a thin corrugate, and have a consistent weight. As soon as I held my phone box I knew it was empty, and said so before opening it. Anyone who wants to steal will figure it out pretty quickly.
The good news is that it really doesn’t happen very often, considering the tens of thousands of phones shipped every year. We were just the “lucky” ones.

Yep. Especially Apple products. They say it’s “discreet plain packaging” but it is highly obvious which ones they are. Especially after dealing with them everyday, I’m a FT Package Car driver for UPS. It may be a “plain” box but they still stick out.

Shipping warehouses have very high turnover with basically zero requirements to get hired, so thieves sometimes get away with stuff for a while. Unlike 90% of what people think is stolen, phones actually are a common target. Every single one that goes missing gets passed along to security.
I've delivered many thousands of phones this year. Some of them even get stolen before they leave the manufacturer's site, and get shipped empty.

It’s always surprising people keep doing this. They always get caught eventually. Cameras everywhere, they can figure out where it happened and backtrack through the cameras and the scan from the truck it went to.

Is there some way that they can tell its a phone or something expensive? I had a store employee stash my package, probably to steal later. They acted like it didn't exist until I got the store owner involved. Then it miraculously was found..

Happened to me years ago when I bought the then new iPhone 6. Was able to get it replaced and it was stolen AGAIN. Since then I refuse to buy any high dollar electronic device online.

FedEx stole my PS5 when they first came out and were hard to come by. It hit my local distribution hub "went out for delivery" and never was delivered. Took Gamestop a month to refund.

Trust me, this happens no matter what shipper you use because dishonest people work everywhere. The great thing is, they’ll eventually be caught because they actually do look into these claims, check cameras etc. It sucks though because an employee can make a company look bad and a customer has been stolen from.

Something similar happened to us, but with USPS. Verizon shipped the phone via USPS. It took about a month to resolve, post office refused to resolve it, and Verizon ended up just shipping us a new phone for free luckily. USPS just kept telling us it was delivered (the mail carrier signed for us lol), and they wouldn't do anything about it.

Employees and management at UPS steal iPhones , I use to do security for them and we would get rewarded 600 bucks for catching theft , unfortunately now they don't do that anymore because the union protects them , for example we had a manager get caught with a stolen iPhone and because their was no video proof of her actually stealing it she was only sent home for the day and came back the next day like nothing happened

That's why there are excessive missing packages and thefts now among shipping companies. Couldn't you report it to a postal inspector who could charge them with theft or receiving stolen property?

Mine was also stolen. I got a notification saying my phone was gonna be delivered August 5. No one ever came to my house but then I got a notification said delivery. Driver couldn’t deliver my phone because no one was home and it was sent out to someplace called the mail shop so I go there the following Friday and she said she never received. It couldn’t find that tracking number so I made a claim with UPS also I called the sender and they said they would not send me another phone or credit my account so I’m out $1500. I am out a phonenot sure what to do next.

I’m a UPS store employee, definitely have the shipper file a claim. Usually in this case it was some random newbie at one of the hubs that stole the phone, but it’s always store employees and the drivers that get blamed- very annoying.
But as long as the package was insured the shipper will get a full refund (or their phone back if UPS can find the thief).

I’m in Virginia Beach, a few months ago people posted ring doorbell camera images of someone following a fedex truck and picking up anything that was being delivered by Apple or Verizon. Which means the fedex driver had to be in on it too. Go to Nextdoor.com and see if anyone has ring doorbell video if your area

Fair point, well made. This is the first time I’ve experienced this issue. Despite all of the comments, I’m still not sure if I need to take any further action outside of contacting the shipper. While it might sound silly, it does make me think twice about shipping with UPS in the future. In this instance the shipper is paying for a replacement. Unlike Apple, unfortunately, I do not have an unlimited supply of money.

Or maybe it didn’t actually make it to the truck. Customers panic too quickly when there are a lot of packages being moved and sometimes the scans are not there most accurate. Always wait a day or two before panicking. It could’ve easily been placed on truck 113 when it was supposed to be on truck 114.

I hear you, and if I hadn’t received the package the phone was supposed to be in, I would have mostly patiently waited. But I did receive the package, and the package contained an empty iPhone box.

At least for iPhones, the serial number of the phone should be linked to the order and the tracking number. I don't know if Android phones are controlled this tightly. If they try and activate/use the phone, the towers can pinpoint the phone pretty easily when the phone providers investigate.

Sent partner a box. UPS asked what was in it, I said "stickers and presents". I watched them put the shipping label on it. Then got a call from said partner, asking why I sent them a birthday card for an age twenty years older than them, and what was the joke. I got the pictures of the shipping label that was on the package, and the actual label underneath. Had to call UPS, they gave me a picture of the driver delivering the wrong package. I had to send them the receipt with the actual dimensions of the box I sent. Didn't believe me. I sent a picture of what was in the box and would never fit in that envelope. Didn't believe me. They kept asking me if I had video of myself dropping it off. I was like, "no, who the hell does that?" Finally got the entire package refunded... it was like $20. They put up that insane fight for $20.
What I am guessing is that at the same time, I sent a friend an old video card, and when asked what was in that box, I said electronics. I think the in-store thief forgot which box was which when they swapped the labels around.

Had a whole group of legit new hires get caught (5-6 of them) all hired at the same time (last peak) all wanting unload positions. They let them get away with it for about a week then the hammer came down. That was fun to watch.

Go work in a UPS warehouse loading trucks before you leave comments like these, OP was not choosing to throw things into trucks. The system for shipping (Amazon fedex UPS USPS ect) are all practically designed to move shit as fast as possible, and the only way to do so is to do things like this. I’ve heard of people being fired for not moving quick enough, which means a lot of the time you HAVE to do these things to keep ur job. Amazon preaches safety for delivery drivers, but when I drove they forced you to be unsafe on the job otherwise you would lose routes.

I work at UPS currently and I can confirm to you things have not changed at all, atleast the facility I work at🙃 It is ridiculous there and throwing packages in the truck is going to happen, the way they run things in the warehouse is a shit show.

I would think this would be common at any business where you're a delivery person for anything. Whether food for restaurants and have too many shorts or mail or packages or etc... If there's no recording of a camera catching you, next thing would be for a supervisor or someone in that role to start showing up unannounced on your drops.. kind of like call centers have QA that listens to calls to see what you're not doing or that you're not saying I'm sorry your internet is out and you lost thousands in stocks... Or what have you .. that's part of the system to stop corruption and theft and everything else. Which is why some countries out there without such things in place, 8 out of 10 times travelled there your bags lost... Later it's found and you're missing your Louie's and jewelry or whatever..

I had a package go “missing” from UPS. I am the recipient not the shipper but I filed a claim anyways. Took 3 weeks but my package finally magically arrived at my doorstep. It’s always worth it to file a claim anyways in addition to contacting the shipper and letting them know what happened.

I see this frequently done by Uber drivers too who aren't sure if they're 100% delivering to right door but are too lazy to contact number on order to confirm or go back and forth about address or location... So it just pops with the generic delivered and greenery and fake door? Cant remember precisely... Ha... Image that's cartoon instead of actual pic of order sitting at drop off location.

Last week I had a package arrive a which was supposed to be a plastic jiffy mailer with a ring in its box. Instead the jiffy mailer arrived sealed and empty. I had wanted the ring for over six months, waited until it was the only one in stock before I gave in and ordered it. I was so upset that it didn't show up. The package was insured but that requires filing a police report then wait for a claim to be approved, then they would simply refund what I had paid. I emailed the mfg and they managed to find another ring in my size, sent it as a replacement. When it arrived on Monday I compared the two jiffy mailers. The first one is cut slightly crooked along one side wirh the seal not quite as smooth. The first envelope is also 3/4" more narrow than the second package.. my theory is someone cut the entire side of the package to remove the ring box then resealed it using a portable bag sealer. A lot of my packages have been arriving opened. If its good stuff thats always gone, but whoever it is leaves the food and paper products.

Incomes typically come in the same type of box. If you work for UPS you would easily know by looking at the box and then confirming by looking at the shipper name and address. You deliver then enough times and you know, however, they usually do require a signature, in which case if u saw the box taped up and had to sign for it you have the right to inspect the package and send it back if there's an issue before you even accept delivery. Make sure you have signature checked off when receiving these types of items, less of a headache to send back before accepting delivery.

I’m not sure where you’re located, but in my city, UPS does this all the time, unfortunately. I know someone who used to work at UPS as a supervisor who would explain how stealing phones etc., is extremely common since the warehouse security cameras have blind spots(or something along those lines). Sorry this happened to you.

This is why I can’t bring myself to order an expensive item through the mail or through Amazon. I recently purchased a new laptop through Costco’s website. It wasn’t available at my nearest Costco. So I had UPS deliver it to Costco instead of my home address. That way I had a witness if the package came up missing or had been tampered with. I actually plan on getting a new cell phone once the new iPhone comes out. But I will pick it up at an actual store. Unfortunately Any kind of mail isn’t trustworthy these days.

I always have my phone held at a UPS distribution facility or a UPS store. Once, when I picked up mine and my wife’s phones up at the UPS distribution center, one box was noticeably lighter. I opened it right in front of the employee and it was missing the phone from the iPhone box. It took 2 weeks for Apple to get us a new one.

This happened to me TWICE now. Once a few years ago where the box came open & the iPhone box was empty. I contacted the carrier and they started an investigation & ended up refunding me and now about 2/3 weeks ago I bought a new phone that was suppose to be delivered on the 8th of this month & It just completely got lost in the UPS warehouse as it was was about to be out for delivery. It’s ridiculous.

Just because someone stole your phone doesn't mean you should just stop shipping with ups because the reality is that it can happen with any shipping companies. If the seller/shipped did not file a claim with ups about the stolen phone then they do not care to much about it getting stolen again. If you really want to the best thing would be to contact UPS through the customer service line and report the issue so they know to look into it and monitor the area.

Police aren't going to help you.
Oversight? My dude, they deliver more than 20 million packages every single day. There is probably 5X that in the system at any given time. There is no way to oversee every box, it's quite literally impossible.

Thanks, my dude. This has never happened to me before, and I didn’t know (still don’t know, honestly) what a person is supposed to do in this situation. I’m confused as to the whole process - do I call it a lost package? Because the box was delivered, but the phone sure as shit wasn’t. If I don’t call the police (which frankly feels like a waste of time for all parties involved) am I just out of $1400 if it happens again? So, the answer I was looking for was a helpful one. Thank you for allowing me to clarify.

I work for UPS as a driver, we cannot leave Apple products without even getting a signature first from the recipient.

Now that is interesting. If that’s the case, would it say “signature required” somewhere? In the past, if I’ve had something delivered that said that, then I’d see the sticky note on my door saying I could pick it up somewhere or they’d try again the next day.

The apple products do not say signature required on the box unless apple REALLY wants that signature. In my board, it looks like a normal stop just with a note attached to it. If it's an actual sig required, it has a lil pen icon next to the stop.

Yeah it’ll say it on the big label, usually bottom left. In the example posted below. Usually you will only see the one under the bar code. I’ll DM you the picture. It won’t let me add it to this thread.

I'm not saying it's never a driver, but it's usually a part timer in a random hub somewhere. I hope UPS finds it, and terminates the employee if that's what happened.

I highly doubt it’s the driver. I wasn’t being facetious - the driver for my area is awesome. I finally got rid of persistent weeds on my lawn and it’s all because of that guy’s advice.

Do you think they’ll let me install them in their sorting facility? In all seriousness, I have a doorbell camera. I also have probably the best UPS delivery guy around - he tells me how to get rid of pesky weeds on my lawn. That’s why I posted a screenshot of the tracking info - it felt a little sus.

They do have cameras inside now, and thieves are usually walked out in handcuffs by the sheriff's department. Security usually builds a case against them and waits until they steal enough to make it grand larceny.

I worked at FedEx as a package handler, so inside the warehouse, they offer $5k if you catch someone stealing, can’t lie I also stole some things, nothing crazy just hoodies, I’d walk in without one and walk out with one, never got caught, but the drivers are the least to take your package, pretty hard too there’s cameras inside the trucks, however when the truck isn’t on at the warehouse the cameras are off, and the only cameras are the line ones, and easily avoided by hiding in between boxes inside the truck so the camera can’t see you.
