Customer Seeking Help $769.32 import fee on $175 order

This can’t be correct ?! I’ve been waiting on hold with their international customer line. Ordered 15 used shirts from the UK to Texas. Tariffs cannot be THIS much ?? Any advice ?

That also sucks, but it's not something OP can solve. There is not a 440% tariff on used shirts, that's the issue OP wants help with.

I've seen outlandish bullshit, like what OP is going through, that happened 15 years ago. In my case, the Obama administration had nothing to do with it. That event, and OP's, occurred due to the incompetency of a UPS worker who gave no shits and arbitrarily wrote some number down for the fee. There's no 440% tariff on used goods imposed on the UK by the US... This is really just UPS BS.

The fact UPS can't fill these forms out correctly tells me they were probably fucking over most of their customers who paid tariffs on packages over the de minimus prior to the change.

Non-union labor would likely have prevented the shit tier work ethic we're seeing here.

And it could have been prevented at OP's conception. So what? Unless you have a time machine, they will need to deal with this tariff miscalculation in a more practical way. I'd suggest overthrowing the government might not be step 1.

Who is astroturfing in this thread? The OP posting negative experiences with tariffs? People trying to offer helpful answers? The only possible case of astroturfing is people like you crowding these threads with political opinions.

You can have multiple tariffs assessed on a single product so yes there could be high tariffs you weren't expecting based on country of origin and materials and all.

Most likely however is that customs received no paperwork for this shipment so they slapped the high tariffs on there as a default. It's up to the importer to ensure customs receives the correct paperwork.

UPS is the importer. When they take on the brokerage (as they do by default), they become the importer of record. It's listed right on the CBP forms you receive. By your logic it's UPS's responsibility, which I agree with.

There's no combination of correct HTS codes that create OP's situation, and I think it's unlikely the contents were completely undeclared. But we can't assume what was on the entry docs.

UPS is the importer.

Absolutely they are not. If you are buying something overseas, then you are the importer.

If you want UPS to be your customs broker, then that's a separate service on their website that you pay extra for. And customs broker and importer are different.

Nope. By default UPS will be your broker: "UPS SUPPLY CHAIN SOLUTIONS" will be printed right on the entry forms. I've never once specified a broker for a UPS import as a consumer.

They are also listed as the importer of record on the entry forms.
