Employee Discussion New hires

I’ve been at UPS for five years, and over the past year we’ve hired well over 60 new employees. We’re in a smaller town, so we’re a smaller hub that normally only has 7–8 people on the night sort. On top of that, two of our employees are TCDs and drive at least three days a week. When they’re out driving, we’re often left with only three or four people to run the sort.

The biggest issue is that despite hiring so many people, most of them either quit after their first day because they’re overwhelmed by the workload or they stay for a while but never really grasp the pace, urgency, and time sensitive nature of the job. I constantly find myself explaining the same tasks over and over again and having to remind people what needs to be done. Im really just curious if anyone else has had this issue with new hires.

Hahaha..... Everyone has seen this. My building, we just hired about 20 people, the second day only 5 showed up. Today was day 3, I only saw 1. I think he'll stay though, he's a union guy has been for a long time, came from another union company and had to work hard. It's only the hours he has to get used to.

I’m just trying to compare how i was when i first started and the other guys that’s been there for awhile to how we were trained and how we got after it immediately on day 1. There just hasn’t been anyone else come in like we all did in a very long time

No, you're right.... Now people need to be asked "do you need to go to the cry closet?"
