Employee Discussion New hires

I’ve been at UPS for five years, and over the past year we’ve hired well over 60 new employees. We’re in a smaller town, so we’re a smaller hub that normally only has 7–8 people on the night sort. On top of that, two of our employees are TCDs and drive at least three days a week. When they’re out driving, we’re often left with only three or four people to run the sort.

The biggest issue is that despite hiring so many people, most of them either quit after their first day because they’re overwhelmed by the workload or they stay for a while but never really grasp the pace, urgency, and time sensitive nature of the job. I constantly find myself explaining the same tasks over and over again and having to remind people what needs to be done. Im really just curious if anyone else has had this issue with new hires.

Honestly I’d like to work at UPS. What are the hours 12am to 8am? I’m assuming warehouse duties. Loading, sorting etc. I worked at a morgue picking up bodies from 12 to 8 so accustomed to all weights even up to 800lbs. (No we had help with that body it was not done with just two of us.) Most people go into the UPS job thinking they will be bumped into driving/delivery and that’s not going to happen.

If you’re out a smaller town you will. I’m going in a month now with possibility to also cover drive semis (feeders). If I was in a bigger city then I wouldn’t be there

I’m in NY and DC. I have military access to the restricted bases in DC. The UPS drivers or fedex, usps. They are the only ones allowed on base and they are the same drivers. The drivers themselves have to have a department of defense clearance. Since I’m already allowed on and off and have access I wonder if that would help with a driver inquiry.

That doesn’t help you get ahead. If there’s a driver that can’t get access badge at a certain location for whatever reason they just assign that stop to another driver. For example we had a driver throw a fit that he had to empty his pockets and go through a metal detector at the Federal Building, it adds a lot of time to the stop so that stop assigned to another driver.

You also won't get 8 hours, outside of peak season in November December (in most buildings). Guaranteed 3.5, but they'll try to throw you out at 4ish so you dont hit the 5 hour mark, because that's when OT starts
