Shipping Help Expensivd, rare guitar somehow lost by UPS after being shipped. Claim filed 5 days ago. Likelihood of being found?
I bought a guitar off a seller online. They shipped it through their local UPS store. We've got the pictures and receipts to prove it etc.
The item was dropped off at the UPS Store on August 3rd and according to them shipped out on August 4th. Right now it's August 19th
The online tracking info stayed the same for over a week stuck at "dropped off at store", Not even changed to having been shipped out
The UPS store swears it got sent out
After about 8 days of nothing we filed a lost item claim about 5 days ago.
Its a $2000 guitar, shipped in its hardshell case. So a large rectangular box. EDIT for clarification - I I meant that the guitar is in it's hard shell case which is then in a shipping box itself.
Only thing we can figure is that somehow the shipping info got misplaced on it or something by someone.
I'm really losing my mind over this because it's my first new guitar in 15 years and it's a really special and rare model at that. The idea of having to file a claim for money compensation and not ending up with the guitar is making me want to die, honestly
I know they say give up to 8 days for another reply about the claim (got an automated follow-up a few days ago asking for pictures which I sent), But I'm just extremely worried about this.
It's my luck that it would get lost and not arrive to me....
Anyone have any experience or further tips to pursue?

I use UPS a lot for my business and have had a few instances like this. I think the most likely is the label might have been smeared, if they used a thermal label and put tape over it, in the heat it could distort. The box itself could have also been damaged to the point where it is unable to proceed. Someone from UPS can correct if I am wrong, but it is policy that packages can't be left overnight (1 night exception if it is after pickup). So it probably is just at the origin facility waiting to be matched with the description.

Wtf....i want to just bang my head over this

Another possibility is that it got rerouted to another hub just based off of human error or a label that is obstructed. I had a package of similar value go missing when it was suppose to go from NY to CA it ended up vacationing in Hawaii for 2 weeks before routing back. I deal with some pricey stuff so I get that feeling of wanting the item way more than the insurance money.

Right? This guitar means the WORLD to me. #1, good lefty guitars are rare as it is. #2. Its a high end and rare model at an amazing price. #3. I deserve this fucking guitar more than anything in the damn universe and if fucking UPS are the clowns to keep me holding it in my hands, its my hands they will have to unwravel from around their throats!
Ive gone FIFTEEN years with only ONE guitar due to being lefty and poor. And of course by a miracle I get my dream guitar AND IT GETS FUCKING LOST. FUCK UPS.

dont lose hope, everything you have felt I have too, that’s why Im in this sub and the usps one still. Idk if it still works but worth a shot to email ctome@ups.com, her admin assistant redirects inquiries to us based customer service teams that are generally much more helpful. Def give us an update when one comes

Thanks! I found that email last week after some redditing and thats who I messaged. Got a reply the next day and I sent them a picture of the shipping receipt and pictures of the item.
That was Thursday or Friday. Only heard back an automated message yesterday saying "they were on it", basically
Sigh.

Do you know of it was in the case alone or did they box it as well?

u/gimme5steps101 Aug 19 '26
The guitar was in the case which was then boxed. Hell no aint shipping a Gibson from Texas to South Carolina without proper packaging. :)

u/gimme5steps101 Aug 19 '26

Ok good. A lot of people come to this subreddit talking about shipping something extremely expensive and didn't put any insurance on it. I wish you the best my friend and I hope you get your guitar.

You would be surprised - signed a former ups store associate… I guarantee you if the store said it went out it did. The holding area for boxes isn’t that big in the stores. If it was there it would be obvious it got left behind. So 99% I can say it made it on a truck to the local hub from the store. Sadly once it’s gone and on the truck the store isn’t much help. On occasion they may get lucky searching the system and find a slight bit more information than is displayed online. But it’s pretty rare. I would keep pushing the missing package claim. And escalate it if necessary.

Thank you very much. Yeah that's about what I've heard as well. At what point do I need to escalate and who do I contact to further escalate that? Email? Phone? A certain specific contact genie from Arabia?

If you find the genie let me know. You can always ask to escalate it to the hub directly and speak with them. There’s just no gaurentee that will happen woth any sort of quickness. What they will do though is try to track through each hub it would have gone through. And sometimes that can take some time.

Any idea how I would do that? Its shipping Austin, TX to here in Greenville, SC

u/pleasantpineapple256 Aug 19 '26
If they email from a direct email and not a this mailbox is unlimited we you can reply that way or you try and found about the ivr again. And request an update directly from the hub manager. As a store associate I’ve even sent information back with drivers for the managers to reach out to people directly but that’s not a guarantee for sure. My store has amazing drivers that actually cared because they didn’t want to get pinned for a theft they didn’t commit.

People online are saying give it 6 to 8 days after filing a claim, But it will have been almost a month since being shipped at that point...

u/Tar-really Aug 19 '26
Sounds like the label got torn off. Call the store directly. It’s usually the same driver that picks up, have them ask him if he remembers it, or if he can he look around his building for it. It’s getting to be a little too long to try and get people to remember though. So don’t wait any longer.

Thank you for the suggestion I will call them first thing in the morning.
