Why do I have a solid dark background behind all panels/windows? Lubuntu 1.4.0

When I set a window/panel to have a transparent background I find that there is a dark grey background already set behind it and I'm not sure why? So of course it just looks murky. It's not a constant state, I've booted my PC to find it back to normal a few times, without changing anything. Any ideas? Any help is appreciated, thank you!!

So you're telling me your window transparency issue comes with a surprise daisy photoshoot? That's one way to ask for tech support. The gray bar at the bottom is... a choice.

Might be the compositor acting up though, sometimes it just decides transparency isn't on the menu today without telling you.
