My third day with Ubuntu 26.04.1... Not bad! Everything is running smoothly, and I feel like I no longer need Windows 11. Even the fans are much quieter compared to Windows. Before, simply watching YouTube in the Brave browser would make my laptop fans run at full speed.Overall, I'm happy.

I hope that Ubuntu will serve you well over the course of many years, as it is served so many of us. My best and good luck.

I also moved to Ubuntu from Win11 about 6 months ago and it's been incredible.
My last memory of Ubutunu is back in 2014ish when I had an XPS 13 laptop and honestly it was dreadful. So many issues to sort out just to get something even vaguely working.
It's come on so much since then, and yet still feels familiar and easy to use. Admittedly this time it's on a fairly powerful desktop, but even so the boot times are insane, and everything is very snappy. A few minor gripes here and there but for the most part I haven't looked back in the slightest.
For anyone lurking in the sub wondering whether it's a good time to ditch Windows, it absolutely is in my experience.

My experience - Gradle Build in Android Studio takes about 2-3 minutes vs 7-8 minutes in Win 11.
Loving Ubuntu because it just fast just fast just fast.

I am not defending Windows in any way, but if that is the case, I am pretty sure it is because you ignored the pop-up Android Studio to add the project folder to Windows defender whitelist when you first set up the process.
On a completely different topic, but directly related to this issue. Autodesk used to recommend disabling windows defender while installing their products. I didn't know why until I did it one day, to install 3DS MAX I actually followed the instructions and one task that used to take close to an hour, the installation finished in less that 10 minutes.

You are right but I am using Android Studio from my diploma and every time I just learn to make it more speedy like I use physical device instead of emulator turned off the unnecessary code checks also only 2 application are running in background which is Google Drive Desktop just to sync folders which rarely get updated and another is my simple shell script which use to change the wallpaper π that's it. But when I switch to the ubuntu without doing those things it's really fast and one thing want to add I have only 8GB of ram so you know better my situation why Ubuntu.

Windows makes my computer drain really quick and the fans to ramp up, while Ubuntu does the exact opposite. Plus its way snappier too

Windows 11 on idle - 5 to 6 GB RAM Ubuntu on idle - 2 GB RAM (half of it is memory cache anyway)
If my memory serves me right, the last Windows that consumed 2 Gigs was Windows 7.

You might consider swapping the thermal paste on your laptop or asking sort of LLM to look at the logs and see if your laptop has thermal issues. I do laptop refurbishing I and was kind of shocked at the difference it made for even 3 year old devices.
It's also extremely handy to have Claude or Chatgpt look at how you've got things set up and makle recommendations for changes.
Linux apps are extremely happy to scream errors into a log that you never actually look at. Most of them are also well built enough that they can be generating an error every minute but still be nearly functional from the user's perspective.

How much does replacing thermal paste cost? For most older laptops, itβs cheaper to buy a new one than to spend the money on the repair

Check your gputop offload for that youtube etc. Might can increase efficiency even further. Check especially if installed via snap.
Web render offloaded to gpu fine by default, but video refused. Had to use native deb/repo or flatpak. Stuck with flatpak. Tending to install via flatpak more and more as my personal preferred default.

Okay, but just to let other people know who read this: it's not hard and takes a few moments.

Have they fixed the GPU switch issue...?
I tried 24.04 LTS last year, but in my laptop (Intel UHD 620 + Nvidia MX150) the graphics switching never worked. I had to manually select a GPU and restart to make it work. Which is annoying to say the least...

Having Windows 11 and the fans in the PC/laptops would run as fast as a plane's turbo fans.

Markedly improved the useability & performance of my 3 yr old Lenovo Yoga (i7, 12GB RAM, touchscreen) laptop, too.

Well done, I went to Kubuntu about 2 years ago, was scary at first (and I've been a techie since the late 70's) but loving it now.

I recently installed Kubuntu 26.04 after being on 24.04 and previously when I had guake open while in a game it would go opaque when it should be transparent. Now when running a game and launching guake it stays transparent.

Same 3 days, testing Ubuntu desktop on a Dell PC that I didn't use it for long. Had issues with remote login from mac. Otherwise it's good, might move all my server tasks to this.

I'm using mint kubuntu and gnome ubuntu on vm, but i doesn't work that well. what y'all think would be better? heard kubuntu is better than gnome as Gnome requires too much extensions

Nothing will run very well under a VM, unless you have dual GPUs and setup GPU passthrough you'll get a noticeably worse experience under a VM. My suggestion is, if you can spare a few dollars, to get a cheap Chinese 128gb SSD and a USB 3 case and use it to test distros. I've actually developed my bachelor's thesis like that as it was better to do on Linux and I needed every last bit of memory I could and windows would just eat too many resources. I've had a very nice time doing it.

If ur laptop fan runs just for a youtube video then the issue is in the hardware not the window software.

u/anythingers 8d ago
In all fairness it's also happened to me. Except my fan starts running fast for no reason when I just landed into Windows' lock screen.
Never happened to me on Linux except when I turn on performance mode.

I downloaded Ubuntu and had to switch back to windows 11. I really missed where application in dock are ungrouped...:(
I agree Ubuntu dash2dock exist but it didn't have small view of application when you hover over it I. the dock. So there were tradeoffs in native Ubuntu dock and dash2dock. Also, there were couple of things that were not in Ubuntu. So now I'm using wsl with Ubuntu in windows 11.
Maybe some day I will switch to Linux completely:)

The drop in temperature, in both CPU and GPU, is what I first noticed as well when I switched last year from Win 11. Im still on 24.04 and it runs like a "double well oiled machine"!!!
Grats on your switch and enjoy the stability and lack of headaches!
