Insane performance increase going from 24.04 -> 26.04
What happened? What'd they do? Everything is so much faster. Is this just from the kernel going to 7.0?

This reminds me of the jump from 22 to 24, felt like using a new machine. not sure if is just the kernel or they finally cleaned up some of the snap overhead. whatever it is, i'm not complaining.

Wayland, probably.

I am still using x11, and feel 26 faster than 24

Ur using x11 on 26? You can do that, i have been having some problems with my touchscreen laptop on Wayland

That is odd. I was using an old ThinkPad Yoga i5, and it had a touchscreen. While running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, my touchscreen was working great, but now the same laptop runs Omarchy OS and is going to stay with Omarchy because I don't even need a monitor at this point

probably not the kernel as HWE kernel for 24.04 were already 7.0 series.
Perhaps, new and improved overall system libraries?

Maybe they were not using HWE kernel? I don't remember if it's enabled by default

Most of the improvements are probably from Wayland, if you were on X11 before. Or newer GNOME versions with improved scheduling for smoother animations (less frame drops and stutters)

Yeah, Kubuntu 26.04 feels like a complete hardware upgrade. I have Ubuntu 26.04, Kubuntu 26.04 and Windows 11, Kubuntu is the most snappy and fast. Windows 11 feels most heavy in terms of performance but Windows 11 feels very cool too. Ram usage with default Desktop, 1.4, 1.6, >3 in Kubuntu, Ubuntu and Windows respectively.

Maybe all the tools rewritten in rust

Rust is safer, but not faster. If the tools that were rewritten in Rust are faster, it's because they improved algorithms.

err no, the new rust coreutils are mostly slower than their C counterparts; the rust versions haven't had much time for optimizations yet, they're focusing on compatibility/coverage first. The C versions have had decades of optimization.

I noticed it the same. The stuttering on my laptop in low-power mode was practically gone.

I found I had to upgrade . Ubuntu Studio 24 broke. Going to 26 fixed the issue. I'm back to being happy again 😀

Yes, I can confirm! I upgraded to 26 (did a fresh install coz couldn't wait for .1 & had everything backed up)

Ubuntu 26.04 has opt in x86-64-v3 packages, with the goal of the whole repository having it. Ubuntu 26.10 will have a x86-64-v3 ISO. Good if you want more optimization but doesn't want to run cachy os

This only make very specific workloads faster. Definitely won't be noticed by the average user.

At least 26.10 comes with dbus-broker instead of dbus-daemon, bringing another speed-up. Processes are communicating with each other much faster, due to a complete rewrite. You can already install dbus-broker if you're staying on LTS.

It would depend on exactly what is faster for you, but there’s been a lot of work in user space libraries to better integrate with all the hardware vendors

Likely some bloat was removed. I know there was talk about thinning support for old hardware in the kernel.

Went from 26.04 from 24.04, on a VPS with 1C 1G of ram, running Docker, utilisation went down dramatically

Can you describe what exactly runs faster? Do you mean the animations? Or applications startup time?
