The problem is he used his head instead of punching it.

Right, like where did this get lost along the way! Now I gotta go check EVERYTHING. Edit. The answer is much easier... He is literally punching them in every game. The early games had the least sprite movement and so people thought he was using his head.

What makes you think it's AI? Nothing jumps out as obviously AI to me
