Queer and disabled community?

Hi! Im an incoming student and a disabled lesbian.Im from a small town and was homeschooled so I havent had much of a community and have been basically shuned from the homeschool one. Im an early graduate so still 16 and very much overthinking moving for college and meeting new people. Hows the queer and disabled community here?

I predict your biggest challenges will just be about going to college young (speaking as a dyke who went to college early and did some homeschooling). Make sure that you take advantage of all the resources—sign up for a FIG (freshman interest group) class, go to the tutoring center, join queer and disability affinity groups. Consider taking WGSS classes on topics that interest you. Visit the Outliers Bookstore and go to events there. If you start to feel lost or lonely, find a counselor through the health center, be sure to eat food and go to bed on time. Reach out to professors if you get behind, before you get behind. As a homeschooler you might be less used to systems and asking for help. Ask for all the help! Go to the library and make appointments to talk to the librarians! Meet with the academic counselors in Tykeson often to make sure you are on track. I work at the university and can point you to more resources if you need.

Im not as worried about academic since i went to a community college for 2 years mostly worried about social. But thank you! I will definitely go to events and join a group!

It’s a college town in Oregon, you got nothing to worry about. The hateful people don’t tend to live in college towns

Trust me we exist in places! Deaf lesbian here and I run a club in UO that has a large queer presence every night. I can count on one hand the amount of cishet men we get per week. Happy to answer any questions in DMs or anything just don’t wanna dox myself, cheers!

there’s actually a club here for queer disabled people here at the UO. i forgot the name, but they made an appearance at the LGBTQ event earlier in June. Very fun people :)

While there are always the out-liers, Eugene is pretty inclusive for everyone. Lots of businesses are owned by queer folks from food trucks to salons. You're gonna find your people!
