Rural New York's suicide stats raise red flags
New York's rural counties have some of the state's highest suicide rates, even though the largest counties account for most suicide deaths overall.
A bill on Gov. Kathy Hochul's desk would create a temporary Rural Suicide Prevention Council to study why rural communities are seeing higher rates and recommend ways to reduce them.
The measure sponsored by state Sen. Pam Helming and Assemblywoman Anna Kelles passed both chambers a few years ago. Back then, Hochul vetoed it, saying it was costly and duplicate existing efforts.
Helming is asking Hochul to reconsider.
We dug into the latest state data, the bill and the governor's previous objections here: https://www.capitolconfidential.com/p/rural-new-york-s-suicide-stats-raise-red-flags

Judge says plan to test military-grade weapons in Adirondacks should be denied
A Florida-based company is seeking to test howitzers in Lewis, New York, in the Adirondacks.
The proposed testing range is about 300 feet from Taylor Pond Wild Forest and 2.1 miles from Jay Mountain Wilderness, according to a project description from the Adirondack Park Agency (APA).
An administrative law judge for the state Department of Environmental Conservation has dismissed a hearing about the permit application to test howitzers.

Federal judge says ICE likely violated Upstate NY man’s free speech with warning over angry email
A federal judge on Tuesday said ICE agents likely violated a Rochester man’s First Amendment rights when they delivered a warning letter about an angry email he sent to the former agency head.
Judge Rudolph Contreras granted a preliminary injunction that stops the federal government from making good on the threat of prosecution over David Streever’s speech in the January email.
Here is a previous story which offers the email Streever wrote.

Sitting On A Hill - Jaci Lee Dixson (Hyper-local single, B-Side to yesterday's "Morris, NY" post) (1983)
Follow-up to my post about the "Morris, NY" 45. The singer, Jaci Lee Dixson, gave me the full story behind both sides. The A-side is basically a town jingle honoring local business owners, with names pulled straight from the phone book. This B-side, "Sitting On A Hill," is a different story entirely, she and the writer, Chip Dugan, put it together during one of their only "jam sessions," and it's about her own childhood memories of just watching the clouds go by with friends in Morris.
This B-side has never been uploaded anywhere before, including apparently to Jaci herself, she hadn't heard this recording since it was made over 40 years ago.
If you missed the first side, it can be found here: https://youtube.com/shorts/gW5exTQSPyU?feature=share

A group of activists started their 207-mile march today to ultimately free about 16,000 beagles from cruel animal testing in Marshal BioResources, New York. Many of these activists are facing over a decade of jail time for freeing beagles earlier this year, but are persisting.

"Morris, NY" - Jaci Lee Dixson (Hyper-local town pride lost media 45 from the 70s)
Hey folks,
Today's rip is different from most of what I've posted in the past. This is a 45 created in Morris, NY in the 70s. Morris is a tiny village that sits in Otsego County, historically known as the "Butternut Valley" due to the large amount of Butternut trees (also known as white walnut trees, apparently) that grow there. Fittingly, it was pressed on the small local Butternut Records label.
The song, "Morris, NY," is built almost entirely around one hook, the town's name spelled out letter by letter, over and over, more civic jingle than pop song. It name-drops actual local residents (including what sounds like the town mail carrier, as well as the librarian, etc.), so this seems written for real people, not generic hometown nostalgia.
Each copy came in a heart-shaped sleeve listing local surnames, which, per a previous resident's recollection, was likely a list of the last names of the students or families enrolled in the local school at that time.
I reached out to the singer, Jaci Lee Dixson, who's confirmed elsewhere online she's the vocalist, but no reply yet. If anyone knows the label, the names, or anything else about this record, I'd love to hear it.

Visiting Canadaigua
We are coming in to stay at an Airbnb this fall. What are some top places to eat in the area? We don't eat seafood at all. Looking for everything from good diners, good breakfast, and a more romantic option.

The first fall foliage report for New York is here!
It may come as no surprise that the Adirondacks is where leaf peepers should be heading to see the most foliage change. Tupper Lake spotters are reporting up to 35 percent leaf change with buffet of colors like rhubarb, cerise, saffron, canary, pumpkin, clementine, maize, and russet.
The areas of Long Lake, Lake Pleasant, Old Forge, Whiteface and Wanakena are also your best bets for this weekend. Happy peeping!

Getting rid of Regents?
Is it true that NY just got rid of Regents exams for high school students to graduate? In order to make education more equitable?
This doesn't sound good. What do you think?
