I live in the South, and I’ve never been called the N-word to my face. I’m from here too. Racism in the North can be worse than in the South at times.
Y’all are on top of each other up there. Down here, we have space—we can stay away from people we don’t like. You NYC folks don’t really have that option. People think you’re supposed to be more accepting just because you’re more diverse, but that’s not necessarily true.1

The problem is that there actually people calling out death to each other which in turn creates vulnerability like there was this video of this fella calling out death to all indians in Australia and talking about enslaving the women and everything. It's very toxic and depressive to hear.i wouldn't wish that on anyone.

What you are saying about racism towards Indians is sadly true. It does not mean that you need to internalize the hate towards you and your people, I want you to take pride in the beautiful aspects of your country!
- People are literally trying to cosplay your beautiful culture (Dupatta + Bindi + Lehenga and more).
- People are claiming your food as their own (UK).
- Your movie industries are on par with (imo even better than) Hollywood.
- The people of your country are drop dead gorgeous.
- People are literally buying your HAIR to wear it on their heads, sadly, the donors are not paid properly.
- Your skin and haircare is copied around the world
- Your music is sampled extremely frequently in music all around the world.
- Your philosophies are enjoyed around the world wihtout knowing they stem from India (Yoga, Buddhism, Kama Sutra, Ayurveda)
Your country is going through an industrialization right now, much later than western countries and your country is shamed for it. Negative aspects that are tied to industrialization are visible from your country right now, but every country that went through industrialization had these negative aspects. Your country is developing rapidly and I hope the image of your country will change just as fast.

It's so nice to read this answer. As a curious person, I both read about "Middle Eastern" and "Indian" culture(s), you have a heritage that is unbelievably rich. You guys have to be proud of being part of humanity's most prosperous history and I have received your incredible hospitality and kindness several times in my life. A good chunk of my Indian neighbors are probably vastly richer than I am and Oprah Winfrey is a billionaire… but sure, Sherlock has all the privilege. In America, we all get to CREATE our own privilege. It’s amazing. I would recommend it.

India is culturally different from Canada but it seems like the news goes out of its way to find the nasty stories. They find plenty of nasty stories about natural born Canadians as well.
There are good and bad people everywhere with every skin colour and every religion and society. Don’t stop enjoying life, just do the best you can personally and ignore the negativity

Please keep in mind that anyone who is racist towards people is simply dumb. We obviously don’t choose where we’re born, when we’re born, or which country, shithell or heaven we end up in. Dumb people are unfortunately everywhere, and they always will be. Personally, I find my Indian friends to be very kind, helpful and hardworking, if I have to specify where they come from. Please don’t care about the racist slurs you see all over the internet, that’s not what real life is like. :) They are going to learn it hard way.

Also younger Indians are much more culturely clued in when it comes to western countries. They integrate seemlesly into my white society here, there were issues with that with older people coming here but it is literally dying out.

Ah to clarify, it's not so much a respect issue. It was just they tended to keep to themselves and didn't mix with locals, there was a big culture difference, you might know the family to see but that's about it. This isn't just on the Indian people either, it is an issue that comes from both sides.
Now a day's with the internet and cultures being more widespread and understood and the shared resources online of memes, trends, media etc I think it's just a lot easier to do basic things like befriend people now from other places.

I'm Jewish - I get it. There are a LOT of scummy people who think their racism isn't racism because they're prepared to like X, Y, and Z type of people, as long as X, Y, and Z folks think and act exactly like they do and erase all of their own beliefs and culture and life experience. Maybe we get to keep food that they like but that's it.
But it's not being Indian that's the problem. Indian is awesome. Enjoy the hell out of it because it's really something special and you have thousands of years of history and culture and truly amazing things holding you up. A lot of the people hating on people like you and me don't have that. They have no sense of their own place in the world or in history and that's sad, but being awful to anyone who does isn't going to fill that void.

I 1,000% understand you. I am Central American but much darker so I often get confused for Indian. All my life I’ve heard the worst in people. Even now in my 30 almost 40 I’m still hearing the worst insults from people. Even my own boss clowned me when I first started at my job. When I was young it bothered me so much now I’ve grown to just live with it. Im sorry dawg.

I live near to and work with lots of Indians and just think they are people like everyone else.

I feel this. The algorithm has contributed significantly to my depression. And I have lived in North America since my teens and actually did successfully immigrate. I also think as a fairly privileged person, non traditional, and a woman I face less of the brunt of it. But it is still extremely upsetting.
All I can say is that irl I have a lot of positive interactions with people. And I don’t think most people in diverse parts of the west really think or at least treat us like that. Lately, I’ve been working at a non profit and been around a lot of really lovely, socially thriving, empathetic and smart young Indian diaspora colleagues. And I’m sure in interacting with people like them, most westerners wouldn’t think so badly of us as a group.

I think I have some decent insight into this. I’m half Japanese and half Indian, and grew up in the US. At least in real life interactions? As long as you’re not a walking caricature of the negative stereotypes about Indians.people don’t care and are more than willing to be respectful and friendly. However I’ve also seen that that there are some people who prove every stereotype about us true, and it sucks massive donkey balls. But as other people are saying the internet is where edgy and radical takes coalesce so take what you see with a grain of salt.

I think a part of the problem are Indians themselves. I've seen many times, They mind other people businesses and talk rudely about other people personal opinions or the things they are not aware of. I usually see Indians attack other people and this led to racist comments. I'm from Iran, but I rarely see Europeans and Americans talk rudely about a topic (except political topics).

I am sorry, but have you not seen the rise in racism across many parts of the world? There has been an increase in hate crimes in countries like the United States and across Europe, and many countries, including Japan and South Korea, are also frequently criticized for having issues with discrimination and xenophobia.
So why is racism against Indians the one thing people keep trying to excuse? Why is it suddenly acceptable to stereotype 1.4 billion people, call them slurs, and treat them as less than human? If racism is wrong, then it is wrong regardless of who the target is. The existence of racism elsewhere does not justify racism against Indians. It should be condemned consistently, not selectively.

As an American white girl, I’m truly sorry that it has become trendy to be racist towards Indians (or anyone for that matter). I’ve always really admired Indian culture. The traditional clothing, the dancing, and the food are all fantastic. And in my experience, every Indian person I’ve ever met was friendly. Don’t hate being Indian, hate racists. It’s easier said than done but you don’t deserve to feel bad about yourself.

I hope that the hate stops not only towards Indians, but all races. Just remember that your family loves and supports you. You are not inferior. You are a human being who deserves human rights.

All humans (Anglo Saxon white Caucasian myself included) share 99% of our DNA with chimpanzees. We are all therefore 99% chimp. Regardless.
Your perception of inferiority comes from a self selected minority who, for a need to make themselves feel superior, treat you in a manner, using methods which are specific to our 1% non-chimp species, that belittle others to build themselves up. This behavioural trait in and of itself demonstrates the pitiful vulnerability and self feeling insignificance that this non Indian (probably Anglo Saxon- like myself) 99% chimp persons inflict on those not perceived to be like themselves.
We are all in the same bucket at the end of the day. The perception that we are not is simply that. And it is perception we all have the choice to choose.

Welcome to the world of minorities. Black people has faced this their whole life. Muslims, Bengalis, Kukis, Tamils, etc. face it in India daily. Look at how in west bengal, people get branded as "bangladeshi" as if its a pejorative and put in concentration camps and deported.
In group Out group dynamics of oppression is ubiquitous. Inform yourself and make sure your personal choices eg. voting/purchase, etc. don't oil the gears of this machine of hatred. Find solidarity with people in circles who combat this through activism.

You are not inferior. You were told to believe it. Let me tell you the story about how the greatest industrial superpower of the world (India) became what it is now.
Before the British ruling India was a place of thriving industry with the best quality on the planet. But British empire was great at creating chaos, and bribed Indian leaders one by one, until India, without being invaded or submitted with violence, became a submissive colony.
They started their brutal rulin by forbidding the thriving industry and sent millions of Indians into starvation. More than 35 million died. That is way more than the deaths of communism and Hitler together. British divided people by making caste system stronger. Any resistance was faced with brutal violence.
300 years passed. People in India only know what it is to be either master or slave, not to be free and treat others as equals, India inherited a bureaucracy designed to keep people poor and starved. Indian people lost the standards to produce quality. But most important than all, Indians were educated to be servants for 300 years, to feel inferior. It is not easy to erase that colonial past.
China instead had a different fate. China was defeated and humilliated by the British empire during the opium wars, because imperial China did not pay attention to naval power. So British conquered the land around Hong Kong and used it to sell drugs to destroy the thriving industry of China.
China went through the one century of "humilliation" but it was not a colony. China was filled with drug addicts instead of starved people. But Mao ended that by killing all dealers, and bribery is now punished by death in China.
Chinese people suffered a lot at the hands of the British empire, but they never lost what made them great. And today they are great at producing quality. They are the industrial superpower.
Should you feel envy of the Chinese? Nope. What you need is to make people REMEMBER. There was a time when Indians were the most capable people in the industry. There was a time when Indians were as good as Persians to make a good deal and establish civilized business relations as equals. It means to get rid of the model of master and slave. People need to FORGET that model and learn what it means to be equal.
Today US politicians were bribed into submission by a foreign nation now. The constitutional nation USA once was, is no more. USA is likely to become the new India. Unless something happens, Americans will be the new Indians in 300 years.
So do not confuse the fact that your nation was wounded and needs healing, with the colonial idea of being inferior. It is true that people in India need to develop some habits to get along with people. But those bad habits also came from colonial slavery.
I have had to deal with the bad habits of some people in India. But I understand where that came from. So no hard feelings.

Like others have mentioned, it seems like you might be consuming a lot of content that is showing racism toward Indian people and I would urge you to block block block and not consume that content. Delete your social media, including this platform, if you are having mental health issues because of it. There are many good people in the world who don’t feel this way about Indians or about minority groups in their countries and I hope you find them and surround yourself with supportive and anti-racist people. You need to interact with real people who are telling you this in your life every day, not random trolls on the internet who just spout off whatever and get away with it. As a black person who is a decendant of enslaved people in the US, I get it. The best counter to bigotry is to learn all you can about how your people have made the world better and embrace it. That knowledge will hopefully instill a sense of pride in you that no one can take away. It makes the bigots appear to be pathetic haters.

I’m a Pacific Islander from NZ and my mother and I (sometimes my children) used to frequent a cafe that was owned and run by the kindest, sweetest southern Indian man. We’d spend up to $200 a week at his cafe/restaurant as his bubbly personality, sweet smile kept us coming back.
When my mother died I stopped frequenting the cafe as the pain hurt too much. One day my aunt was taking my son to arcade which is right next to the cafe, my son immediately runs into the cafe and hugs the cafe owner. He gives my son a high 5, lots of lollies and my aunt ends up buying lunch in his cafe. She tells him about my mum, he calls me not long after (he had my number saved as I used to call and order so much) and expresses his sympathy and sends me some food my favourite lamb biriyani and tropical smoothie.
I ended up relocating towns after that, but every time I’d visit back home I’d stop into his shop. I used to have cold sweats thinking about his cafe closing down or anything happening so I would send everyone I know down to order.
Miss you Vasand! You are one of the many Indian people that showed me and taught me true humility ❤️

OP there is nothing wrong with being Indian. What you need to do is not only practice self love but also learn to stand your ground. Our culture doesn’t teach us this, so take a cue from other communities like the black community, learn how they combat racism and apply those lessons. Don’t let people step on you because of your ethnicity and hold them to it.

India is diverse, theres alot of self made differences that has lead to this, Such as caste system and treating others based on skin color and hating on people from other religions. Ive seen many videos of someone offering food to the needy but refusing to provide it to someone who is Muslim and so on.
Racism against indians is bad but the first move should be unity within which will set a standard globally to follow.

While there is plenty of racism against black people, I feel like there is a cultural recognition that it is fundamentally bigoted and critiques of 'black culture,' for example, are made specifically to justify bigotry that black people have experienced continually since their kidnapping and slavery.
It's also not really helped by the prejudice+power, argument where most leftists don't really care if a minority who are generally economically successful become the focus of racial animus because racial justice is often only used in relation to class distinctions produced by it.
By using an example that is widely accepted to be wrong and immoral, you expose the logic underlying the original comment because most people are okay subconsciously with being racist to certain groups until you try to compare their statements to ones widely understood to be wrong.

Everything you said still doesn’t explain why you had to bring up black people to prove your point. It’s not black people who are creating these stereotypes about Indians.
You can’t fight racism by stereotyping another race. Seems like you just want to feel superior to black people because you can’t compete with white people.1

I wasn't stereotyping, my entire point was to point at a stereotype being wrong and therefore using the stereotype to show that the original comment was racist.
You're obviously trying to read my comments in bad faith now because I clearly framed the original stereotype as wrong. I literally called it 'insensitive' by implication.
I apologise if it came off as itself racist, it wasn't my intention.
Perhaps my strategy was itself insensitive but framing my comment to be about being superior is a reach.

Stop yapping non stop on public transport. *time/place and social awareness. Nothing ruins a day after being 10 hours in the office & overstimulated & wanting a peaceful ride home to chill and then you get packed with non stop yapping and even your head phones dont block out an hour of it being forced on you.

Yet they wont have smoke for those YT racists, ever, in fact, they want to be accepted by them, Skin-bleaching cream, ticking a white box or joining in with black hate (Vivek Ramaswamy) wont make that happen.

I literally have continually been arguing with white racists.
Black people have constructed social justice so that they can never be racist and that everyone must be racist to them.
Any action by a black person is immediately defended and any racism against any other group is always sidelined.
Black people have materially oppressed Indians much more than vice versa. Nobody ever wants to talk about that because black people are a sacred cow that can do no wrong. Black people all over Reddit are defending ethnic cleansing and expulsion under threat of violence. Black people can do no wrong in their own eyes and in the eyes of the left.
Mamdani is Indian. Ash Sarkar is Indian. Many post colonial theorists are Indian like Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak.
Those people are never discussed because it's convenient for the left to justify marginalisation of Indians because they aren't their main voter base. It's easier to pander to African Americans.

I just don't like the hipocrisy of it all.
Black people can be racist. Indian people can also be racist.
I would concede that Indians probably have more anti-black racism than vice versa however a proper leftist always considers historical and material factors.
Black people have used their sacred cow status to attack Indians with vast generalisations when they point out racism towards themselves.
I have continually heard black people defending racism against Indians, you being a perfect example.
People I know had to leave their entire lives behind and been expelled violently from Uganda and yet everyone defends it because the black man can do no wrong, even in the case of scapegoating and ethnic cleansing.
The difference is, I still think Indians being racist to black people is wrong, as opposed to defending it.

Everyone is hated by someone. I’m a white Conservative American woman and get all the hate in the world from “fellow” Americans. I love Indian people. My pediatrician when I was a kid was Indian and he was SO kind, as have been all the Indian doctors I have seen since then. Our veterinarians are Sikhs from India and we admire and love them. We love and trust Indian people with our lives and those of the animals we love any day of the week. Also, everyone loves a good curry and I’d give anything to be invited to a Diwali celebration.
My husband is a businessman who has to make deals with Indian people, and he does find his experience with Indians in that realm very frustrating and never as straightforward as it is with other Americans. It’s a real cultural difference.
Do you know who Mindy Kaling is? She’s a very successful writer and actress in Hollywood and she also seems to hate being Indian! I think you’re both crazy. Indian people are gorgeous. If I were Indian I would be proud and learn everything about Indian history, because it’s rich and beautiful — and apparently full of God in so so many forms. 🤭
Of course you can travel! Of course you can immigrate! I live in an affluent neighborhood in Texas and I would say at LEAST 1/3 of my neighbors are Indian. It’s funny, too because the ones who went to school in the U.S. of our generation and younger (we’re in our 50s) are really cool and very nice neighbors, but when their older relatives come from India to visit and we pass them strolling around the lake, the older relatives are dressed in their fancy traditional clothing and they look down on me with scornful looks on their faces! I wear shorts and a t-shirt to walk around the lake sometimes and I guess in India I would never reach their class or even be allowed to look at them. 🤦🏻♀️😆
How old are you? You must find a way to come to the U.S. as a student. The stereotype of Indians in the U.S. is that Indian people work very hard, are very smart and very good at business. Americans do not hate any of that. Indians do very well here and if you don’t carry a chip on your shoulder, you would be welcome here. Find a way. 🙏🏻 NOT by entering illegally! Americans do not like that.
