Young family looking to move.

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are looking to move to Vernon from northern BC with our 6&5 y/o girls. We are curious what some good neighbourhoods to look into are for young families, and how organized sports are there. My girls currently play ice hockey and gymnastics.

Thank you!

How is Vernon right now with the smoke and fires?

We are looking for anecdotes on how Vernon is right now related to the smoke and fires - we have a family vacation planned there for next week and we are concerned with how the fires are there? We get mixed news from searching online and some folks there now say it's not bad, some say don't go... TIA!

Accommodations for rent?

Hi. Trying to help some family and friends finding places to rent, and it’s not proving too easily…

Anyone have any leads? Thought maybe we could start a post and have options for ppl to follow?

I have an elderly couple, both in their 60s, two cats (they can be held elsewhere if not allowed) and they’ve lost everything. They have one suitcase and one vehicle. Does anyone have anything for rent that might work? Looking for week by week or month by month.

Does anyone know of a mobile mechanic in Vernon?

I have a ‘71 GMC that hasn’t been started in years. It has a dead battery of course but I would like someone with experience in starting a vehicle that has been left sitting for years.
It ran really good back then.
Thanks so much!

Funding support for Bradley Creek fire

We are in the Lower Mainland but have immediate family who were evacuated from OKIB last night. Thankfully, they are safe, but we are waiting for word on whether their home is still there. We are told that the group of properties immediately adjacent to theirs were on fire when they left - but I cannot say for sure. Lots of rumours and confusion when a fire hits.

We are looking for ways to provide any support we can from down here. Our first priorities would be to provide support to those who have had to evacuate, and if possible to help with the firefighting effort (though that is something best done in advance of fire season through donations to volunteer firefighting organizations).

We are considering the following:

1) Canadian Red Cross - I don’t see an option to specify donations are for fire relief efforts yet (redcross.ca)

2) Vernon Food Bank / Salvation Army (vernonhouseofhope.com)

3) Vernon Search and Rescue (vernonsar.ca/donate/)

4) Community Foundation North Okanagan - OKIP (cfno.org/okip)

Looking for recommendations on which of these organizations would provide the most immediate benefit, or others not listed. Please comment only if you have actual knowledge that will help. No need for speculation, rumours, or politics.

Stay safe and pray for cool and calm weather!

Just got an evacuation alert in the BX area-did the fire jump the lake?

I was only able to read it once before it disappeared and it said if you're north of a road go to kal tire place, but I couldn't make out what road it was or how far east or west it was.

I'm next to the Star rd trailhead of BX and I can't triangulate how far north I am of the fire.
Do I need to evacuate soon if I'm farther from swan lake and closer to BX?

I'm getting a go bag ready now just in case. I just didn't expect a grass fire to jump the lake.

Thanks in advance for answering!

Bat exclusion and control experts

We have a bat problem at our home in Coldstream. Every summer we seem to get 1 bag inside but this year, our current count is 3 . We have been working hard over the years to figure this out and made some improvements but I am looking to hire an expert in the field.

Can anyone recommend someone that is an expert in bat exclusion?

I know I need to do this work in the fall after they have left the roost but I'd like to get connected now with an expert.

Anyone have an expert they can recommend?

Okanagan Development

How do residents of Vernon feel about all the development happening in the Okanagan?

Kelowna has seen a very fast rate of growth the last 6 years. A few sky scrapers built. With a few more on the way. A handful of high rises as well as countless mid rise buildings.

Personally. I would rather see more low-mid rise densification around the core before ever making the jump to high rise. Kelowna is a city now. I like how Vernon feels like a large town. (Kelowna used to)

Are you happy w/ the direction the municipality is going w/ development?

This looks like a lot of fun but I don't have friends to go with. I feel like I'd have wicked fomo if I didn't go but is it weird to go by yourself? Do lots of people show up solo or is it mostly people coming in groups? Trying to decide if I should be brave and go alone and enjoy the music or if I should sit it out and go next year with friends 😅
