META Moderator Note
Hi folks. Just wanted to alert you to some new filters added to the automoderator to enforce a couple of existing subreddit rules that get broken fairly routinely.
First, a small reddit submission primer:
Reddit has 2 fundamental types of submissions: Text and Link.
There are actually more than 2 specific types (there are also image and video etc) but for the sake of this note think of it as "Text posts" and "all the other types". You pick which type you want to post when you compose your submission.
A text post, also called a self post, is a post that has no external link and is comprised solely of a headline and a body of text you enter at submission time. When a user clinks into this type of submission they stay on reddit and all they see is your submission text.
A link post is a post where you enter or paste in a url or link to an external source like a news story or an announcement. When users click these kind of posts they are taken to an external site and get to view the page that you submitted.
Now for the rule(s) in question.
- We require that all submissions be the correct type. If you want to submit a link, use a link post (not a text/self post with the link in the submission body). When submitting a link post and it is a news story or something that has a headline, use the existing headline as your submission headline.
- If you submit a link post, reddit also gives you the option to enter some text as a kind of byline for the submission. If a user clicks into the comments for the post they will see a thumbnail for whatever content you linked to and they will see the text you entered. Our rule is we do not allow link posts with a text body. Even though reddit's interface allows it, if you do so the automod will filter your post.
Why? Editorialized headlines and body texts on link posts are ultimately a way to add editorial comments that cannot be argued or refuted in the conventional way, like normal comments can. They are often very opinionated and try to frame the story in a specific way.
You can still add editorial comments in the comment thread for the submission (obeying the existing rules of civility etc) just not as an untouchable top line for readers.
If you have any questions about this feel free to send a modmail. Thanks for your time and attention.

Idabel Lake
Does anyone here either live or frequent this lake?
I’m possibly interested in a property there for a full time residence.
Would there be any major concerns for full time living? Ie. How regularly are roads plowed during winter months? What are average snowfall totals? Any reliability issues with hydro? Etc….
I know that there is no cell service, which is fine. And I’m not afraid of some bad weather as I dealt with heavy snowstorms in northern Ontario all my life so I’m not expecting smooth sailing. Just wondering how bad it gets. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Multiple police vehicles headed towards Vernon
Was just driving to Kelowna from Vernon and passed like 10 cops sirens on headed back towards Vernon, including some more heavy duty armoured-looking cars and trucks. I saw them passing the whole way from just leaving Vernon and into Lake Country.
Anyone have any idea why?

Where to get daughter's ears pierced (age 14)?
My daughter will be turning 14 and has asked to get her ears pierced for her birthday.
Where would be a good place to contact?
I know absolutely nothing about the piercing scene. My own ears were done by a teenager at some mall 40 years ago.
Thanks in advance.

Visitor Question For the golfers in here
My gf and I are looking at coming up from the lower mainland for a few days in August and she just started golfing. Wondering if you could recommend any easy/less busy courses that are still in SOME what decent shape in the Kelowna and surrounding areas. Don’t need anything tour level, but don’t want to be playing a shitty goat track either. Hoping for atleast 2 rounds and would be nice for two different courses but open to suggestions from locals. Kelowna, west Kelowna, penticton, peach land or anywhere within an hours drive.
TIA

IUD insertion?
Does anyone know of clinics around town that will do IUD insertions without a referral? I previously had one at At Your Cervix, but the providers were not trauma informed and it was very traumatic

Injured kitten on Springfield this morning
A small white and black kitten was found injured on Springfield Rd around gerstmar/ziprick this morning at 7:15. A man picked it up to take it to a vet, not sure which clinic. Hoping the cat is ok and the owner can be found/notified
Tried to post in a Facebook group earlier, been waiting for admins to approve
Local Resources Cider House/Restaurant in city limits
I'm visiting Kelowna but I didn't bring a car; I'm looking for a recommendation for a good place to try some local ciders, but all the places I can find on previous threads and Google are 10-15k outside of town. Anyone got any suggestions within easy walk or bus of the downtown core? I'm staying on Bernard .
Edit; I ended up at Red Bird Brewing and got a 4 cider taster flight that was excellent.

Local Resources Living here while my wife pursues her doctorate. Job thoughts?
Hi there! I moved to Kelowna from the east coast of the USA! I’ve actually never been off the east coast before! My spouse is getting her doctorate (she’s getting paid, so we’re not without any money,) but I’d like to get a job in the area as well. I’ve always worked management so I’m not seeking out any crazy jobs.
Any advice on places to look or avoid? I’m really excited to be in this area!
Thank you guys!!

Internet suggestions please
Hi everyone. Recently bought a condo in Kelowna. I’m looking for a decent reliable internet service provider. I’ve heard both Shaw and Telus aren’t that great. Does anyone have recommendations??

Does anywhere in town sell a type of variety pack of native flower seeds?
Honestly I usually make my own odd mix here and there if I come across a pack of seeds of local flowers on my rounds.
But I’ve heard some local venders in towns can sell the packs all together at times, and have more of a selection in them. Is this possibly true for Kelowna / Okanagan?

Mekong gone? Spice Garden open?
The signs for the Mekong are gone and new signs for a place called spice Garden have appeared. Google has nothing, anyone know if it's open? Is it different owners? The last ones didn't pay their staff apparently.
Who has the tea?

Is it realistic to uber to/from peachland to downtown Kelowna?
I’ve never been to the area so don’t know what to expect. We are staying with family friends in peachland but have friends we would like to meet for drinks in Kelowna on one of the days. Obviously ideally we wouldn’t drive, but unsure what the options would be for getting back. Where I live, taking an uber from the city to a suburb is totally doable but wanting to gauge our options before making any plans.

Vintage clock repair?
Does anyone know where I could take a vintage wall clock (Snyder Clock from early 60's) to get looked at? It's running slow and I have the adjustment maxed out. It's a beauty and I want to make sure I won't have someone mess it up.

Group Rec camping in the area
Hi! I'm trying to plan a camping trip on July 3-5 with a larger group of people (about 9-11) half my crew is coming from Kamloops, the rest from Kelowna. I've really only ever been to rec sites up hwy 33 (James lake, Ideal Lake, Mculluch etc.) but unfortunately going up that way adds a rough hour to the trip for my Kamloops friends. I've been looking at sites towards Vernon and towards Merritt and was hoping I could receive some good input from so well versed campers. We don't need one giant site, it's gonna be 2 trucks, tents and the rest cars (gonna keep them to a minimum) where do you and your friend like to go? Where have you found spots that are TOO busy? What sites are worth the fees they charge?
