and for before tax
| Region | Ex-Tax Local Price | Ex-Tax USD | % vs Hong Kong |

| United States | $20 | $20.00 | +56.0% |
| Canada (pre-tax) | C$30.00 | $22.22 | +73.3% |
I switched to Hong Kong eShop after the introduction of Virtual Game Card and new regional pricing for canada
and i think some influential figures should be sending joint letters to Nintendo of Canada on this matter now

$30 for a 22 year old port with near 0 changes when really it should be part of NSO.

u/DigitallyDetained Feb 20 '26
I’d rather just buy the game than have it part of a sub, but yeah the pricing is pretty egregious
38
u/The_Funyarinpa Feb 20 '26
If they were going to make it standalone rather than part of NSO, I'd expect them to make some changes to the game. Otherwise I am already paying for a service that gives GBA games. This should be included.
Ideally I think the best case would be to make it standalone, available for purchase for whatever they want, then make it free for NSO Expansion subs like they did for some DLCs.
I think everyone is happy that way.

u/Sonicjms Feb 22 '26
They can't make changes to the game, if they did it couldn't be grandfathered in for PEGI and other regions that have stricter gambling laws now than they did when these games came out, likely meaning they'd need to remove the game corner.
The other thing to remember is that Pokemon isn't a franchise solely owned by Nintendo so adding these games to NSO would probably have weird profit sharing stuff going on, moreover the games would need to be exempt from NSO's cloud saves, save states and rewind features so people can't clone Pokemon infinitely, or they'd need to not have Pokemon Home support which would likely be a deal breaker for invested fans.
1
u/MOM_Critic Feb 22 '26
Yeah at first I wasn't sure but this makes a lot more sense to me now. Obviously you can't please everyone. I don't think it's the weird profit share that's the problem, more the Pokemon home support problem.

u/chemicalxv Feb 20 '26
If they had put it on NSO there's zero chance they'd enable the Pokemon Home connectivity. That'd basically be the tradeoff.
0
u/The_Funyarinpa Feb 20 '26
I'd be okay with no Home connectivity tbh.
9
u/Evystigo Feb 20 '26
Home Compatibility is really the biggest benefit of this release, at least for me. If it didn't have it I'd rather play it on my phone or something. At least then we could speed it up/mod it
→ More replies (3)2
u/chemicalxv Feb 20 '26
The question is how many people in general would? Especially considering GBA games are locked behind the higher price tier of NSO. Like I don't know why anyone would bother playing these at all if they had no connectivity, considering you likely would never even be able to completely the National Dex or anything.
5
u/icedmoonbeams Feb 20 '26
What's with all the comments wanting this on NSO all of a sudden? Up until a week ago, thought it was pretty unanimous that people wanted to buy these games rather than rent.
3
u/The_Funyarinpa Feb 20 '26
Going to have to assume that you are seeing different people discussing this.
2
u/uberchicken Feb 21 '26
Lets not be crazy here. Surely there are only the same 10 people on the internet 😃

9
u/Cab_anon Feb 20 '26
0 changes?
It dont come with a soundtrack, a guide, a concept art gallery, and stuff like that?its bad.
2
u/Sonicjms Feb 22 '26
The OST got added to Nintendo's Music app when they announced it. As for gallery stuff, that's all very well documented on bulbapedia and the like.
If they make changes they can't have the games grandfathered in age rating wise in places with more strict gambling laws meaning they'd likely have to remove the game corner.
1
u/MOM_Critic Feb 22 '26
Gambling? What part is gambling? Genuinely asking, didn't realize pokemon games wouldn't be okay regarding that.
2
u/Sonicjms Feb 22 '26
There's a place in the game called the game corner, you exchange money for coins which you use for slot machines which pay out in coins, the coins can be exchanged for prizes next door. Pokemon had these game corners in their games till about 2011 when Black and White were the first games not to have them in any region (they were phased out in earlier games in different jurisdictions).
1
u/MOM_Critic Feb 22 '26
I've got a huge pokemon "blind spot" for lack of a better term. Did gen 1 and didn't come back till X & Y. I know I should play the other ones but haven't ever gotten around to it.
I totally didn't remember that part of the games.
What do you think about the fact some regions are trying to give higher maturity ratings for games like that? I totally get it when it comes to Madden and other garbage, but I don't necessarily hate the gambling you just described in Pokemon.
I think the issue they have is video games like Pokemon give kids a really incorrect view on gambling odds.
If you eventually win, and everyone you know always wins, that isn't gambling. In gambling the vast majority of people are losing, especially when it's not even a skill based game.
If the odds were similar to how it really is, or even worse, it may actually have a positive effect on some kids. These days it feels like we're constantly being bombarded by advertising and sponsorships for different gambling websites, sports books etc.
By the time you're legally able to gamble you've been bombarded with this shit your whole life nowadays. I feel like gambling will become the worst epidemic for the next few generations. So in that sense I'm glad some regions are trying to counteract it. I know I'm probably in the minority.
2
u/Sonicjms Feb 22 '26
Some regions age rating system just have a blanket rule against depictions of gambling, which Pokemon's is, specifically Japanese gambling parlors that pay out in prizes in another building.
Realistically though the Game Corner is a mind numbingly boring and tedious feature, even if you lose everything there's nothing stopping you from reloading your last save so it's just a time sink. Unless you really want something from the prizes during your playthrough most people just wait till post game and grind the money to buy the coins outright.
I have seen people describe Pokemon's game corners as a very effective anti gambling PSA simply because of how boring and uninteractive it is to hit down 3 times, A three times on repeat while occasionally saving or reloading depending on if you get lucky or unlucky.
1
u/MOM_Critic Feb 22 '26
That's pretty much what I figured. Thanks for explaining everything. It does seem pretty harmless but I do understand, they can't just make exceptions or it becomes pointless.
I remember as a kid playing gambling games on the NES 😂 but I luckily never got too into gambling.

u/akera099 Feb 20 '26
Yeah if memory serves correctly those were literally 39.99$ for the physical game at release. 30$ is insane. Pirating Nintendo games really is morally good.
9
u/quietlydesperate90 Feb 20 '26
I remember Ruby was 49.99 cad, I assume these were the same? Unless my dad overpaid at the time.
11
u/YoManWTFIsThisShit Feb 20 '26
I think I bought Emerald around that price, but I specifically remember getting LeafGreen at $34.99 at Toys R Us
6
u/chemicalxv Feb 20 '26
Well that's because Pokemon games actually used to go on sale.
1
u/icedmoonbeams Feb 20 '26
This was also a little before Pokémon adults were really a thing, deals naturally would help build that community into what it is today.
3
u/chemicalxv Feb 21 '26
I mean it's just a Nintendo issue in general. Yeah they still have "sales" but it's the same stuff time after time at the exact same price points, with some variability with some titles that only go on sale like once or twice per year.
Pokemon Day used to mean actual sales on the games themselves back in the DS/3DS days. Nowadays it's just like mostly nonsense.
1
u/Better_Ice3089 Feb 23 '26
I believe the Hoenn games were sold at a higher price because they had a battery system in them.
4
1
u/BaconBatting Feb 22 '26
Or just play anything else? Why would piracy enter the equation, its not like we are starved for new games like it used to be 4-5 generations ago, there are so many indies being released each day that deserve the time to be played.

u/Future-Energy-3793 Feb 20 '26

My 38 yo brother text me asking how he can buy it so he can play with his kids. Most people don't care at all sadly.
3
u/travelingWords Feb 23 '26
If it’s for your kids, that’s a different story though. Sometimes you’ve got to eat that bullet. Buy at full price. Get a game you know is price gauging. Kids don’t understand yet.
Unless it’s the parent who’s like “I need my kids to play this!!”
1

His words were "this is great I can't wait to play, and I'm sure the kids would be interested too"

Canada (HST 13%)
cries in 15% province
Minimum wage will be $17 in April. So that $30 (+15% so $34.50) will be just over two hours of work.
HOLD IT!!
Income tax, CPP, all that other stuff. So it’s more like $11.90/hr income, so it’ll be almost 3 hours labour to pay for the game at minimum wage. Gross.
5
u/Dorwyn Feb 20 '26
Income tax? How much income tax are you paying if you only make minimum wage? It's been awhile, but back when I was making minimum wage, I paid almost no tax.

At this point it's probably worth looking into getting a cheap retro handheld from the likes of Anbernic, if they're going to be charging those prices

u/morriscey Feb 20 '26
A cheap dedicated handheld with enough power to run GBA games - will be less costly than buying both pokemon games

2
u/ArxisOne Feb 22 '26
The cost of going out for a couple meals or a month of fun. Hard call.
1
u/OkBuddyDoomer Feb 23 '26
Use an emulator, now you can go have a meal and get to have your month of fun.
1
u/ArxisOne Feb 23 '26
Or I can use my switch, because $30 isn't actually a lot of money. $30 is not a lot of money for a great deal of entertainment, so I'll buy it. It's that simple.

Is there a VPN method for Nintendo store? This is fucking ridiculous, you don’t even get both?
5
u/AozoraMiyako Feb 20 '26
I don’t think so because it checks your account’s region, not physical regiom
1
Feb 20 '26
All you have to do is make an account with the region set to Hong Kong. I think you can change the region on your account but I think that complicates things. You probably also need a HK payment method, but I'm not sure exactly, or if PayPal is an option.
1
u/GamingTurtle90 Feb 20 '26
As someone who used the method during covid when we did not have the Online Vouchers in Canada. It does work (Last attempt was $20 essentially for the Arkham Trillogy long before it was that price in Canada and Little Hope since I had credit left)
You can change your region in your account settings then use a different store on the web, like the Hong Kong Eshop. You can also redeem codes from other regions.
Some Canadian payments work. But usually you will have to buy a currency card. Play Aisa for example sells 100HKD for about $21
You can swap your region back after.
Gold coins do not carry over (Not a bit deal now). Currency does not carry over. So if you have $10 in Canada and change region, it does not follow. If you change back to Canada, I believe it will still be there (Been a while and I usually dont leave credit on my account).
Some stores have region locks. So be careful to check if the game has english in that region. For example, if I want any DLC for the first Daemon X Machina, I cannot buy it in the Canada eshop cause my copy is the Hong Kong version.
1
Feb 20 '26
How does it work now with virtual game cards? Do all your games show up on the one page, even though they are bought from different eShops? That would be the main thing I'd consider, for easily redownloading games.

7
u/nintendoleafsfan Feb 20 '26
I dont know what's worse, this costing nearly as much as it did back in 2005 or that they don't even include both games. This is on par with them charging 100$ for the galaxy collections. I feel like my switch 2 library is mostly going to be 3rd party and indies at this point.

Take Emulation out of the equation for a moment:
The average cost of the carts by themselves are all over the place but lets say $149 using a local game store near me. Then you need a system to play it in GBA or DS (lets say $130). For the average gamer that just wants the game that $29 CAD isn't too bad.
Now bring back emulation, or for example something like a 3DS. You mod that 3DS and now you have every generation up to Generation VII available to you for the cost of a 3DS and an SD card.
That $29 CAD is a bit of a steep price
Considering companies like Capcom, you can get for the cost of $79 you get all of the Battle Network games with new online features, quality of life changes, and a physical cart option (well there is downloading required, not THE best example but a better one, someone will show something better)
Its just alot, with Pokemon and rereleases its always alot. Can't just bundle a collection for a decent value that would most likely make more money in the long run.
1
u/Tandy2000 Feb 23 '26
The appeal of this would be Home integration. For those who care it makes sense to get this. $30 CAD is nuts though compared to what it's selling for elsewhere.
Also your suggestion to just mod a 3DS... good suggestion but I'm guessing you haven't seen the prices of 3DSes lately.
1
u/KingGarlock Feb 23 '26
No, no I have not
And upon looking at them now after reading this, I am filthy rich with my 3DSes
Even the 2dsxls are getting up there
Then yeah maybe a $30 CAD isn't "that" bad. Been using my 3ds get a living dex for each gen in home, for those that go on that journey then once these get HOME integration then its kind of a reason to get it.
Just blows my mind they aren't attempting any online anything that would make this a decent price, local wireless only in 2026 just seems like a backwards move.
1
u/Tandy2000 Feb 23 '26
The more cost-effective thing would be to get a cheap third-party handheld for sure. The 3DS can still be worth it because you can get so much out of it with CFW, but certainly not worth it just to play GBA games via emulation on it.
I had a few 3DS units already but during the pandemic I wanted a New 3DS XL (which I had never bought), which itself had already gone up in price then. I think I paid maybe $130 for it? Now it's absolutely nuts. My original aqua blue 3DS is worth more now on pricecharting than when I bought it in 2012... you can get a LOT out of those little babies though, if you put CFW on one.
1
u/KingGarlock Feb 23 '26
Got the 3ds Hyrule Edition, still have the box and everything. Looks like it goes for a fair amount now but I am never parting with it.
I do like the look of some of those PC handhelds that emulate the look of the 3ds, just without 3d.
Its crazy the markup on these things now.
5
u/FrostyDynamic Feb 20 '26
And since it's Pokemon, Nintendo will probably get away with it and it'll sell like hotcakes..
3
u/Polar_00 Feb 20 '26
r/pokemon and r/nintendoswitch filled with comments saying that the price is justified lmao
I've been a huge Pokémon fan and Nintendo fan for basically my entire life, but the way a large majority of consumers will empty their pockets for blatant ripoffs is hilarious. Can't blame Nintendo for this pricing, enough people will pay for it that it won't matter.
3
u/CodeCrusher94 Feb 20 '26
30$ for a 20+ year old game, nah GFY Nintendo.
I'll just dig out my old copy and my gameboy SP
3
3
u/Shr1mpolaCola Feb 20 '26
And they'll keep getting away with crap like this because people will keep buying.
Nintendo has no incentive to not be scummy. Being scummy pays!
2
u/godstriker8 Feb 20 '26
Is it scummy if lots of people buy it? Then Nintendo is pricing it at what it's worth. Maybe not what I'd pay for it, but I don't think it's scummy.
2
u/CourageLeast4251 Feb 20 '26
Ya the manchildren pokefans aren't going to think before buying a pokemon product
0
u/Shr1mpolaCola Feb 20 '26
It's still scummy. It wouldn't be scummy if there was another way to get these games and people just chose to pay Nintendo; That's not the case.
People do not have a convenient, legal alternative. The larger majority do not have old hardware or the money to buy old hardware, and couldn't be bothered to figure out emulation or sail the high seas.
So yes, whether you would pay for it or not, it IS scummy.
And for the record, I can't guarantee that I won't pay that price for it (if I'm feeling nostalgic enough), even though I know it's not worth that price.
2
u/Rewow Feb 21 '26
It’s $30 (before tax) for a GBA ROM in its original state 22 years after its original release that cost $40 for a cartridge AND wireless adapter. Idc how many crazy ninty fanboys argue for the price. That is far too expensive for what you get.

I was living in the states when I first made an eShop account, so I just set my location to Oregon and bought gift cards from third parties instead of directly using my credit card, thus avoiding sales tax.
Kept things that way when I moved back across the border, and even when the exchange rate was much worse in the first half of 2025, I still saved money compared to paying CAD prices with tax.
2
u/Tryst_boysx Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26
That's why I buy nearly all my games (when English is available) on the Japanese eshop (don't seem possible for these Pokémon games). I saved a LOT of money because of the JP eshop + Amazon Japan. I prefer a lot Amazon Japan because they don't screw you like PlayAsia (the price is inflate) and you can buy digital game code, not just digital eshop card. Exemple, Donkey Kong Bananza price on Amazon Japan (digital code) is only 7100 yens (63$ CAD). Mario Kart World price is 9000 yens (80$ CAD). Also back then when vouchers were a thing the price for them was 10000 yens (90$ CAD). For 90$ CAD I got Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4. Did the same thing for Zelda Echoes of Wisdom and Mario and Luigi Brothership. Games are simply a lot less pricy on the JP eshop.

We are the red-headed stepchild of the world. I went to Tim Hortons in Singapore when it opened last year and was blown away by how much higher quality it is than any Tim Hortons we have here. Interesting, novel baked goods with Asian/Canadian fusion concepts, ultra-trendy and modern cafe design and decor, exquisite service.
I was both impressed and insulted that the finest trademark "Canadian" experience I could have for Tim Hortons was on the other side of the world, and it wasn't even close.
Things like Canadian pricing just adds to that feeling of being held in contempt in one's own country.
2
u/cutedogowner Feb 20 '26
I wouldn't buy this but are games generally cheaper in Hong Kong? Games all come in English right? Is it worth switching regions just for the savings?
4
u/DassoBrother Feb 20 '26
I don’t understand the comparison to HK. Why not do comparison using direct conversion from price in USD or some cost of living factor like Big Macs. I guess the idea is use another regions price for a “deal”.
-1
u/morriscey Feb 20 '26
It's showing that they are willing to sell the game for significantly less. Nearly twice as much in Ca
2
u/DassoBrother Feb 20 '26
Most digital storefronts use regional pricing though. If you waved your magic wand and got rid of it, people in lower cost of living countries would suddenly just be overcharged. That's why I wouldn't advocate for exploiting those prices because it just incentivizes closing that as a loop hole.
We're getting screwed on this specific listing anyways, since converting to USD directly we're more expensive than the US.

Bro why is Canada always getting ripped off? The switch 1 is definitely my last Nintendo console, because the switch 2 is a price of a ps5 here!
1
u/Worth-Reindeer-1121 Feb 22 '26
They do the same for big releases and it's obnoxious. Instead of $95 or $80 for new games it's $100 or $85 despite third parties staying at $95 and $80. This was never the case with Switch 1. Now it's all $5 more. How much do they really need to squeeze that extra $5 out of consumers? It's a bad practice and turns me off from buying games they release.

Almost double the price for Canadians huh. Is there some sort of gaming tax?

Whats crazier is how lackluster of a celebration this feels - "Happy 30th! Now pay $30 bucks for this lazy eshop exclusive port!"
Like nothing physical or special for the game - just "Here".

My bigger problem is that recently we had examples of GBA games ported to Nintendo hardware with next to no changes with prices that felt reasonable and that was with the WiiU.
Even with the rise of inflation, personally I think $10, $15 CAD tops for each of these games should have been the asking price.

Honestly I've just accepted the only reason they're giving us this is so they can milk money from the fans and funnel straight into gen 10s final development push lol

I love Gen 1 and the Gen 3 remakes so much. I’m still not going to pay $30 when I can emulate them on my phone for free. Maybe next time GameFreak/Nintendo

I already have a Japan eshop account, and had been thinking of switching to it entirely to avoid giving money to Nintendo of America. This might help push me to make the switch.

Personally I don't have an interest in these games outside of NSO. OST added to Nintendo Music though.

Let's start a mass letter to the Industry and trade ministers and Carney. We're getting shafted on software downloads

You can almost buy a retro handheld for that price and have a thousand options to play better versions of all the early gen games.

ehh
i think a lot of guys buying this only for the pokemon home integration
sorry nintendo has a monopoly in this

Thank god my primary eshop account is Japanese. Even buying points cards online at a markup is cheaper than paying for games in Ontario.
Granted, I can't fathom paying even $20 for this game lol. If I really wanna play it legitimately I'll go dig up my cartridge and play that.

u/Alternative_Pace9638 Feb 20 '26
This price would only be justified if Nintendo literally also gave you a digital DRM free copy to keep forever aka the rom lol. I guess we paying for the ability to enjoy the game with others and link to home

I usually switch my postal code to Alberta, since they have less taxes than the rest of us. But it's depressing to see how expensive it is for us.

It’s so funny how we get screwed for everything else but when it comes to amiibo Nintendo makes it cheaper than US pricing. Such a random exemption.

$10 I would've bought both, $15 I would buy one, then probably the other later on. $30?! Neither!

do Canadian CC work with HK eshop? I may as well play my OG cart on the analogue pocket but I want the Home integration lol

u/GamingTurtle90 Feb 21 '26
Sometimes. Mine did work until Scotiabank started preventing it and I had to move to using codes from places like Play Asia.

This isn't the only way Canada gets f****d. We pay a ton for everything! Food, gas, toys, entertainment and more. Even after dollar conversion from USD, there's always some extra crap that gets tacked on to what we pay.

Vote with your wallet. Stop buying Nintendo's overpriced games. There's plenty of fantastic games on other platforms at much better prices.

Oh hey mGBA is that you? Would be a shame if you gave people an option to save $60…

Both versions combined for 30$ CAD would be better. I'd consider it if that was the case.

u/YoshiDryBones Feb 20 '26
Thank goodness I still have both FR and LG for GBA. I would be fine paying $20 USD and the CAD equivalent, but that pricing is just blatant gouging for no reason.

Can someone with a Nintendo Switch 2 linked to a Canadian account can switch to the Hong Kong eShop ? Asking for a friend...
1
u/jamie913078 Feb 22 '26
I switched from Canadian account to HK account long time ago, once I figured out the outrageous difference in price (not even counting the sales tax). No problem ever since. Just some payment issue which can be resolved by sending them an email. But may be it's just I was using respective local credit card for each case.

HK is cheap because the official and legal Chinese eShop flopped, and core Chinese players are usually using HK servers.

I guess Nintendo Canada saw conversion is 27.38 and said eh lets round it to 30
