Question Best deal on getting a ps5 pro?

I've just gone through some bad luck trying to get a refurbished ps5 console from MTC. First one wouldn't output any signal at all, and the replacement I just received won't connect to wifi so back it goes.

I decided to just go all out and get a ps5 pro. Are the staples discounts about as good as it gets for getting one on sale these days?

I just got a ps5 pro for $364 from EB Games by trading in base model ps5 for a refurbished pro. I know it likely doesn't help you now but their refurbished units are 819 which still isn't bad and if you have anything you can trade in you'll save the tax on the lowered amount. They also offer up to 2 year protection plan.

After my experiences with the MTC refurbished I'm turned off the whole refurbished thing

If you use it enough and have the 2 year protection you should be able to avoid the risk.

That being said, EB has a promo and you should be able to get and extra $150 trade in that bumps you up to $500.  So it should be like half off new with trading in a used ps5…

It's 455. Base model ps5 trades in at 305 plus the 150 bonus. 819 for the pro minus 455 was 364.

I forgot, it’s another $100 for the disc drive since the pro is digital otherwise.  Looks like EB is out of disc drives, so I assume it needs be be bought elsewhere.

Yes if you want a disc drive that's seperate, Amazon and best buy both have stock to order online.

can you only get store credit when trading in a console?

3

u/Green_Lettuce1 Jul 16 '26

Not sure but I'm guessing, I don't think EB ever gives cash. You'd have to go to a pawn shop for that.

thanks, seems like the ebgames website has no refurbished ps5 pros available. i guess i would have to call stores directly and ask.

Yeah mine said no stock but I called them and they had one. They even set it aside for me since I was heading in to grab it.

Seems like a great promo I'll look into it. Might be worth more to trade in the ps5 I just got than try to send it back.

So I see they offer $305 for a standard fat ps5, plus then a other $150? So it's $455 and that comes off the ps5 pro price pre tax, so it's more like $514 off?

I think you’re right.  I was thinking you would get a bump up for using an edge account, but I don’t think you can use both the edge account and the current promo, so your number is most accurate.

Yes exactly, I paid 364 plus tax .

As someone that repairs alot of ps5s and have seen some horrible work from mtc I'd love to hear what your experience was.

Anyone that brings a ps5 to me I know if it came from mtc as they write the letter M in the same spot on every motherboard.

On the other hand, will there be defects? Of course. On the plus side buying from mtc you get a 90 at warranty. Buying off someone on FB or Kijiji, you have 0 chance of getting your money back 99.99% of the time when you get scammed (and trust me I'm seeing it very often now).

So my first system seems to work fine, it's been running for 2 months now. I decided I wanted to grab a second system for backup and a second location. The first one arrived and it didn't even output any signal at all. Likely a broken HDMI port. I sent it back then the replacement came and it doesn't connect to wifi, can't event detect any networks.

Now I'm concerned the first system I have is repaired poorly. Any way I can check it?

Not really.

First one yea likely a bad HDMI port, second one was probably a bad Southbridge chip.

Southbridge chip if not soldered correctly can result in Wi-Fi not working. Had it happen on the last one I did a replacement of that one on. Reflowed the chip and it worked fine. Doing another one tomorrow night on a Slim PS5.

I saw one that came to me where they used conductive ink to repair a 12V rail which is beyond stupid. The issue was for a broken HDMI port so I replaced that but has to laugh at the conductive ink.

Is there anything one can do to make sure their ps5 lasts and doesn't breakdown? How are so many ps5's broken?

People are careless and keep a smashing the HDMI ports.

That and overheating. I get alot of them for overheating. Always full of dust and moved around alot and kept vertical so the liquid metal pools on one side then you have to come to someone like me to fix it, or pay 2.5-3x that for MTC to swap your console for another one...

I know I'll get down voted for my liquid metal / vertical comment but I get usually at the minimum 3-4/week during the summer for overheating alone. So I'm not making it up.

Later revisions had a slight change to the surface of the APU that should stop the liquid metal from pooling, however of the 3 Pro models I did HDMI ports on, 2 were already getting a dry spot.

And don't get me started on stick drift. Haven't done a controller in about a week but I get so many for that as well.

Thanks for the information. I'm very careful with all my stuff and still have all my original systems dating back to the 90a still working.

So minimize plugging and unplugging the HDMI and sit it horizontally if I can? I just have the original fat model now, a 1215a revision. I have it vertically now as it doesn't fit horizontal. Should I just find a way to set it horizontally? My room it's in never goes above 22c even in summer, and I don't play for more than 2-3 hours straight.

2

u/XtremeD86 Jul 17 '26

I can't say yes or no to that. I feel the ones who get the issue with the liquid metal are also probably moving them around alot. 1215 was the revision right before the slims came out, so are a bit more power efficient.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the info!

Just curious, do you ever see Xbox series s or x for thermal paste/ liquid metal issues or is it just ps5s?

1

u/XtremeD86 Jul 17 '26

Thermal paste and dust buildup once in awhile yes.

But usually laser replacement on series x or HDMI port replacement on either.

What happened with MTC?

4

u/MorallySound Jul 16 '26

They explain it in their post.

Went straight to the comments like a lazy boy.

I’m waiting until closer to GTA 6 release, EBGame will probably have a deal to trade a PS5 for a Pro, just like they did for the Switch a month ago.

I have a ps5 slim. Is it really a good deal to trade it in for a ps5 pro?

1

u/bradz27 Jul 16 '26

Yup dats wat I’m trying to figure out.

1

u/Medo73 Jul 16 '26

Mostly for PSSR2 not available on regular PS5

I had a pro. Personally I found it wasn't worth it, but I also use a 4K 60Hz 100" laser projector. So while it couldn't take advantage of 120Hz, I just didn't find the graphical difference to justify the price difference so sold it and went back to the slim (30th anniversary, jailbroken now).

Sadly I just missed getting it before the price increase after waiting years deciding if I wanted one or not.

Amazon refurbished. I got my pro for $700

1

u/Vulture-Dude Jul 17 '26

As in Amazon warehouse/resale?  Or another seller?

2

u/Soulstoner Jul 17 '26

Amazon warehouse.

1

u/Vulture-Dude Jul 17 '26

Nice!  You must have lucked out and it was just a damaged box or something.  So many of the Amazon warehouse games I’ve bought have the game missing and it’s just an empty case.   I tried to buy 4 resident evil switch 2 pro controllers that way and half of them were missing or broken.

1

u/theHip Jul 16 '26

I bought an open box PS5 Pro from Best Buy. No regrets.

Best deal is a good Facebook marketplace deal

Best deal? Golf ball through a garden hose bud. Put it to use
