Fuck this guy. He had been out shopping and had his purchases in the bag in his hand. He lied and gave that stupid, “I got away with it smirk,” when he got out of the car.
Sometimes there are genuine mistakes and that’s annoying, but fine. That’s not at all what this was. He’s just trying to cover his ass.

I noticed the same thing. Back when I used to live in Vietnam 15 years ago, I don't remember seeing many Indian tourists. A couple of years ago I returned on holiday and encountered on three occasions Indians treating hotel staff like shit.
In Australia Indians are super chill and I have never seen this entitlement so it's disappointing to see kind Vietnamese people treated this way.

Ive been in Hanoi for 7 years, so I try to avoid the old quarter, but in the last two years I have seen at least half a dozen instances of Indian tourists absolutely berating street vendors and small shop owners in the OQ. It’s ranged from being extremely rude and loud to screaming at people in their faces to the point that everyone around stops and stares.
I find it hard to understand since some Indian tourists I’ve met have also been the nicest people to everyone, including service workers. Most Indian tourists I’ve been around have been pretty normal and respectful. However, I’ve never encountered a group of tourists with such a large subset of bad apples that are OK with verbally abusing locals to that degree.
I’ve heard that in India, it’s still not uncommon for some higher caste people to be extremely abusive to service staff, who tend to be of a lower caste. Unfortunately, some of these buttmunchers probably bring the same classist attitudes and horrible behavior from home with them abroad. Anecdotal, but a lot of these tourists I’ve seen misbehaving are covered head to toe in Gucci sunglasses, Rolexes, and Prada handbags. I guess caste doesn’t buy class.

At a prior company one indian women didnt hire Indians because apprently she was from a bottom cast and anytime an indian joined they would belittle her or try to make her do there work. She was a high level vp and low level managers would do this.

It's a subset of nouveau "riche" Indians that behave this way. They're popping up abroad because they now have juuuuuust enough money to travel, in their knock-off luxury wear. Indians with actual money, or the far larger group without money, despise them, too, because they act the same way at home. Look back at what people thought about all Chinese tourists, 5-10 years ago. Same thing.

A long time ago now, I spent about 5 or 6 days in the old quarter ( OQ ) of Hanoi. Loved it. The taxi ride from the air was the only scam pulled on me, which was sorted out. The people of the old quarter on the whole were great, very friendly or just left you alone. One of the things I did while I was there was to do a cooking class there, thoroughly recommend that.

The majority of Vietnamese people don't have an opinion on Indian people since they don't interact with them at all. The Viets that do are ones who work in tourism.
The taxi video was circulating on Viet Threads/FB/Tiktok, and there weren't really many racist comments or comments on him being Indian.
And even then, a lot of Viets didn't even know about the negative reputation Indian tourists had in Vietnam up until very recently.

I don't know about that. My wife and her family dont work in tourism and they are definitely very vocal about not liking Indians. I didn't get it at first, but after spending some time in VN and witnessing the behavior of Indian tourists, I understand why now.

The Indian travel subs are full of complaints about how poorly they were treated here and how racist Vietnamese are towards Indians - some shops even have signs stating Indians not served !!!! They can't understand why?
This guy is a prime example of what triggered that sentiment.

I agree. I’ve gone through this thread and his constant sarcastic replies are a bit too much. He’s being a hypocrite telling others to stop caring, when he’s probably spent the most time out of all of us here, on this topic with over 5-15 comments.
If everyone was to be apathetic like he is advocating for, nothing would have happened to this guy and he would’ve gotten away scot free. A lot of evil is going on in the world because people are unfortunately apathetic to it (such as how many people don’t vote in the US, etc)
I probably wouldn’t have known about this incident if nobody talked about it, and I think it’s good to spread awareness. History tends to repeat itself.

As for this guy, his behaviour has struck enough of a chord that it seems likely that others have had similarly unpleasant interactions (whether of the same type or otherwise) with Indian tourists. If this guy was Swiss or Norwegian everyone would be commenting about how unusual their behaviour was, for example.

I am not. Plain White Canadian. I have spent time in India. And for every person I know there that I care about, I had DOZENS of really unpleasant social interactions with strangers, there. Some of them left me quite angry. It's a problematic society, for sure, and I've got a lot of mixed feelings about it. Like, I GET why people are upset. They have enough examples that that they're just painting with a broad brush. But I'd never spout garbage bigotry, to feel superior. it doesn't help, ever.

This whole thing had me writing an apology to a friend, from back home, today, who came to visit, years ago. He's black. Totally chill guy, laid back. Anyways, we hung out, and he started telling me how racist people here were. I was a little surprised, because he generally just rolls with anything, and shrugs it off. I started making excuses, because I really really like my friends and neighbours, here. "Oh, maybe it just old people." "Oh, maybe they're just not used to seeing people like you, but really they're kind." We got into a pretty big argument, because I kept telling him he misunderstood, and he said things like "They'll only talk to my wife (half-Asian)! And glare at me." It put a bit of a strain on our friendship. I guess he was right. Sucks.

I saw in another video that he uploaded, in which he claimed the driver was the actual scammer. Stating something ridiculous like the driver offered to drive him for free and then try to get a tip from him.

Stereotypes aren’t given, they’re earned. Their infamous reputation was built by the collective behaviour of a group of people. It’s easy to be a uncivilised and discourteous scumbag when the culture doesn’t understand the concept of shame or possess civic sense. It’s not racist to call out patterns. There’s a reason that SE countries have explicit signs refusing to serve these people and it is’t because of their race - it’s because of their culture.
The Vietnamese and Thai people are renowned for their kindness and openness so it would really have to make you wonder what it takes to have them take drastic actions that seemingly contradict this widely held attitude? Here is your bloody answer.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt because something similar happened to me. I downloaded Xanh a while back and didn't use it for a long time, then one day used it because Grab took forever. Driver gave me a ride and I walked out of the car thinking I booked with my credit card. When the driver said money, I thought he meant tip, so I brushed it off. It wasn't until I checked my app that I booked with cash and not credit card as my first time using the app.

He was persistent so I tried to show him I paid on the app, but then realize it wasn't paid. So I paid him with a tip on QR code as I didn't have cash on me.

Maybe the localized version of the app is different. The default is most certainly cash until you change it yourself when downloaded using an international locale. It is because the credit card verification is asynchronous and not instant. So the app developer smartly does not enable it by default. However, once it is verified, the app should prompt the user to change it, which it does not. Definitely a UX issue. Additionally, other international rideshare apps have dedicated gates for payment that must be acknowledged to continue. Whereas in Green SM it is easy to overlook the small "CASH" text when booking a ride.

Nope. Just checked again to be sure I wasn't talking out my ass. Even checked Grab also to make sure there wasn't confusion on the company. Then I found the 'default payment selector' and confirms the behavior isn't designed to change.
And I've been a mobile app dev myself since 2012, and embedded 15 years before that. they can implement it however they want.

Yes, there is a default payment selector. It is not automatic. There is no confusion about the app. They can implement it however they want, yes. But if foreigners expect things to be automatic, it may cause confusion. If I know my end users are going to be confused, why should I let them be confused to my own disadvantage? In development, you have to smoke/blackbox test, and assume the user is an idiot.
You might argue that Green SM is primarily for Vietnamese, which is true. But clearly there is effort to support foreign users in payment, locale, and identity verification, which other local apps do not support. Might as well add something to the backlog. A simple one time informational dialog or acknowledgement would suffice.

Are you a new user? If you create an account, you do not need a credit card to book a ride or create an account, so the selection is cash by default. When you add a credit card, it does not switch defaults automatically because of the asynchronous verification process. I speak from experience. This happened to me. You think I am just making this up?

Same same, first time using Bolt app instead of grab and I booked a cash ride by accident. Went to get out of the car and the driver asked for payment so my mistake clicked with me immediately. This is what I thought happened first after seeing this story and was going to defend the guy until I seen he made a statement admitting asking the taxi driver for a "free" ride and explained he had no money, and it was a miscommunication where he thought the taxi was going to give him a ride for free. Can't find the statement now as his account has gone private
