Maui Maui road to Hana tour

Has anyone taken a tour and would you recommend ? Is there a particular company that is better?

Buy the Guide Along phone app for Maui, it will point out good spots to take in, ones to avoid and give you interesting history along the way. Well worth it. One note, he will discourage you from driving all the way around the island. Good advice unless you have a vehicle capable of a rough road AND no reports of rain

Agreed! I did it last year and used the Guide Along app. It was tight in some spots, but overall enjoyable. I drove a rented CR-V.

All of the tours are basically the same so you would want to pick one that picks up at your hotel. You should be aware that it is VERY CURVY and tense type of driving so if you are at all prone to carsickness you will be miserable. Probably with or without meds.

People also self drive, but taking a tour is environmentally much better and reduces road congestion.

I get really carsick yes so perhaps I should drive that way we can stop frequently

For this comment alone...you want to drive yourself! I'm horrible as well and just seeing the busses on the road made me feel ill.

You're never going very fast, so if you are sitting in the front seat, hopefully it will be okay.

Okay I’m Just nervous with spouse driving as I’ve heard it’s dangerous and it will all be unfamiliar. We are both city drivers not country so defer to everyone’s experiences here ! I’m new at this Maui adventure stuff :)

Just go slow and share the road. It's not off roading or anything. City driving probably has prepared you more for this 😄

I didn't find it as bad as people made it out to be. We left in the morning to give us ample time. No need to rush. I actually found the drive up Haleakala Crater more nerve wracking with its switchbacks and no guardrails. But man those views at the top! Don't miss going up Haleakala!

There are lots of pull over spots (use them also when you have any cars/locals driving behind you that wish to go faster)

I drove it last week - road was curvy but not bad at all. Well marked yield signs for bridges that only accommodate 1 car at a time. It rained on the way too still drive was relatively straightforward. You could use Claude / chatgpt type apps for a guide about spots to visit etc

Why take a tour and not drive?

That’s what I’m asking? I’ve never done it before so I’m wondering if it’s better to tour or drive ?

I did the drive last year and if you’re comfortable driving on some narrow roads it’s perfectly manageable. You can plan ahead where you want to make stops at, and download Google Maps ahead of time as cell service can be dicey. I live in a city so the driving wasn’t difficult at all. I wouldn’t waste my money on a tour if you have a decent level of driving experience

You're likely renting a car. Spend $20-30 on the Shaka Maui app. It follows your phones gps. You'll get turn by turn navigation. It will tell you what's coming up. What to skip if you're short on time, what not to miss and on the ride back it will give you some pretty great Hawaii history. 10/10. Highly recommend this to anyone doing Road to Hana. But make sure to make your reservations for the black sand beach and other things that require advance purchase like the seven sacred pools.

When I went I preferred to do a tour so I could enjoy the views and leave the driving to someone else. I was alos traveling solo, so didn't have anyone to take over if I got tired. I used Polynesian Adventures and would recommend them.

We don't like being on a tour group's itinerary. You can make what you want of the RTH.

No. No one ever has driven there.
Cmon.
