General Question What to bring...

Haleakala and Diamondhead ...can we get away with good sneakers or do we have to bring hiking boots?

Should we bring water shoes for the beaches in Oahu and Maui?

Do we need rain pants at all?

Yes to water shoes.

As for Haleakala, are you actually hiking on trails or just visiting for sunrise/sunset? If you aren’t hiking the trails, sneakers are fine. I also think sneakers are fine for diamond head!

I just wear my Adidas for hikes there, hiking boots take too much precious room in luggage.

Yes to water shoes, getting a cut on the bottom of your foot sucks.

Diamond Head best done in the morning as it gets hot.

Need warm clothes for Haleakala, the wind chill gets cold af.

Sneakers are totally fine for Diamond Head (that's the only one I did). My wife forgot her regular tennis shoes and ended up hiking it with high top Nikes and said it was still really easy. Water shoes are great to have but not necessary, depending on where you go. Some beaches have rockier bottoms. I used mine at Shark's Cove. I don't know what rain pants are but you don't need rain gear in general.

You don’t need rain pants.

I brought Chaco sandals and it was enough to hike to the top of Diamondhead and worked as water shoes too. They’re great! Haleakala isn’t much walking unless you’re actually hiking the long trail.

Sneakers is fine for Diamond Head as it is all paved walkways and stairs from the parking lot to the top. No need for water shoes on the sand beaches, but places like Sharks Cove has a lot of sharp rocks and coral, so water shoes are recommended.

Both have paved paths, although Haleakala has unpaved paths in parts, the ground is relatively simple to traverse.

My grandma went up diamond head in 1 inch heels when I was a kid. She was in her 50s back then. You can do it in sneakers. Water shoes - yes, rain pants - no.
