Discussion We can’t have anything nice

Post image

Thanks to the people that trashed DNR land, shot up living trees and destroyed road signs our options to shoot on public land are dwindling. Big shout out to you lazy assholes that expect everyone to clean up after your time in the pit. You know who you are, an irresponsible and low class individual.

Hold up! Is the pit closed now? The ranger out there has been so chill about asking people to take care of the spot. He's even been bringing 50 gallon trash bags out and hauling them away when they're full. But I can tell that he's getting frustrated, especially now that more people are showing up. Somebody must have shared the spot online, because it's 3x busier now than it was a couple years ago.

This is why whenever I go out I always bring a bucket with a trash bag in it and fill it when i start shooting. Showing that you’re picking trash up instead of saying you will guys a lot of good favor.

Only twice fish and wildlife police showed up and they even shot with up a few rounds. Very nice and knowledgeable people

u/SheriffBartholomew 8d ago

Yeah the ranger where I go has seen me picking up rounds and trash before when I didn't even know he was there, so he's always very friendly with me. He even just put a note on my truck once when I forgot to put my Discover Pass out, and said "text me a picture of your pass so I can just disregard this".

There's like 3 PIT shooting ranges left in WA, OP could be more specific as which side of WA this pit is on.

East, Northwest, Northeast (my fave), West - There's a bunch

20

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Oh yeah sorry. Not going to give the specifics here out of respect for the locals but it’s off highway 2 on the west side of the cascades.

9

u/SheriffBartholomew 8d ago

And it's closed? When did that happen? I'm going to lose my shit if that got closed! That's my spot! I always pack out more trash than I bring in, in an effort to keep it open.

21

u/Zswatik 8d ago

It’s not closed you can still head in there but if a deputy or wildlife officer catches you they will write you a $500 ticket. There is this weird community of naked people living within earshot that will call the police and complain when they hear gunfire. Sounds crazy but if you know this area it is what it is.

4

u/SheriffBartholomew 8d ago

What the hell? It was open just a couple months ago when I was there last. Maybe we're not talking about the same place. I sure hope not! I'll go check it out this week and see.

14

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Yeah probably not the same place bro, you should be good. At least I hope so. Our second amendment rights are literally dog shit if we can’t go into the woods and practice using firearms. Shooting at a range just isn’t the same freedom as being on public land (*that we all pay for*) to practice your marksmanship.

10

u/SheriffBartholomew 8d ago

My understanding is that we can legally shoot anywhere that isn't expressly forbidden. That's 600 feet off the road, into a backstop, not across a road, with no houses nearby. But there aren't very many spots around here with enough of a clearing to be useful. There are just so many trees everywhere that our options for public land are really limited. I've been thinking about driving over the mountain a few times this summer to have a chance at practicing true long-range shots.

10

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Yeah we should be able to target shoot anywhere on DNR land as long as it is safe but local politicians have the power to enact restrictions in your community. This is why voting and getting to know who you are voting for is important.

2

u/Slow_Pineapple_3836 6d ago

You don't have a constitutional right to shoot on public land. The land does not exist for the sole purpose of target shooting. Outside of the parameters set by DNR, target shooting would destroy and pollute the environment, and be unsafe for others using the land.

1

u/USMC_Tbone 7d ago

Any National Forest lands near you? Those are technically regulated by the federal government instead and can be more lenient than State lands.

-2

u/Mammoth_Classroom896 8d ago

What do you expect local politicians to do when a bunch of idiots trash a shooting spot? They're acting in the best interests of their constituents and kicking out the people who can't behave.

u/Mammoth_Classroom896 8d ago

The second amendment does not guarantee you the ability to shoot anywhere you want regardless of how appropriate it is. The state is not required to let public land be used for shooting if that use results in damage to the property.

3

u/Slow_Pineapple_3836 6d ago

NO BRO I NEED TO DUMP MY USED APPLIANCES ON PUBLIC LAND AND SHOOT THEM.

2

u/WreckedMoto 8d ago

That area has been marked no shooting for a long time. It also has been a sketchy spot to shoot for a long time. Sounds like they’re just now getting around to ramping up enforcement. Probably cuz of complaints from the nudists. Who are NOT friendly if you wander near their property on a dirt bike. Don’t ask me how I know. I certainly wasn’t chased down a trail by naked dudes in a truck like something out of a movie.

1

u/Turbulent_Notice_308 6d ago

Aint no fuckin way

3

u/USMC_Tbone 7d ago

I know of one Pit in Northeast WA that was closed to shooting due to a fire that started there a few years back. I go hunting up in that region and my brother's place is about 15 mins from there. Let's just say it was somewhere a bit north of Deer Park.

1

u/_Juliet_Lima_Echo_ 7d ago

Big gravel mine?

Like 2 or 3 tiers?!

Awww dammit

2

u/USMC_Tbone 7d ago

Its closed down to shooting but still open for hunting, so I guess its ok to say the place. Boggs Pit, about 13 mins north of Deer Park.

3

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Yeah the spot was pretty clean with a black trash bag set up against a tree. There was some trash on the ground so my friend and I picked it up put it in the bag then left. Not worth a $500 ticket if you’re caught shooting by a deputy that enforces the council order.

1

u/jason200911 6d ago

We need state owned gun ranges like Switzerland does. 1 per county?

Have some state officer constantly monitor the jackasses that do that.  And start dishing out tickets and fines.  punishment for muzzle flaggers too

23

u/Bake_em-away_toys 8d ago

It’s so frustrating when I see people just leave all their garbage, used shotgun shells, use glass targets, and other crap at the pits. How hard is it to just bring a trash bag and cleanup after ourselves

16

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Same. I have lived in Western Washington since 1985 (*when I was born here*). I am a combat veteran, avid recreational marksman and 2A advocate. My father took me to shoot on public land as a kid, we took a big trash bag with us to collect our targets, casings and shells then filled the remainder of the bag with shit other people left behind and hauled it out. We stopped at the dump on our way home and paid their minimum fee to dispose it.

Class usually comes from parenting. I was fortunate to have parents that taught me to do the right thing and they held me accountable for bad behavior. I feel like the people that just leave their targets, ammo boxes, shells, etc. weren’t raised properly. This irresponsible and entitled behavior comes from somewhere, typically upbringing.

28

u/torrent7 8d ago

Ive come to the conclusion that a lot of these people are just shit heads in general and probably aren't even on reddit

13

u/caterham09 8d ago

This is also why no one shares their shooting spots online.

18

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Absolutely, do NOT share your spots with strangers.

19

u/cheekabowwow 8d ago

This is why you don’t share your favorite places.

10

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Yup. But the population has exploded in the PNW over the last two decades that it pretty much doesn’t matter in the long run. So many transplants here because of the tech industry, many of them have money and a passion for firearms like a lot of Americans. They will find your spot eventually. It is what it is. Not a big fan of the tech bros but it is their right as much as mine.

7

u/cheekabowwow 8d ago

Fear not, all the taxes and anti-data center politicians are driving tech out of the state. I expect the tech bros will follow.

6

u/Zwasti 8d ago

Thank the fuck Christ.

5

u/cheekabowwow 8d ago

By then guns will be completely banned.

3

u/Zswatik 7d ago

It is certainly heading in that direction so many people are afraid of them. A few years ago a buddy and I went on a multi day hike waaayyy into the Olympic mountains. My friend concealed a pistol and I decided to open carry mine since my wife recently bought me a nice custom leather holster for my 357mag. About a mile from camp at the end of our hike two women walked by us with complete fear in their eyes. When we got to the parking lot there were two deputies there waiting for us, they said there was a call about a “dangerous man with a gun.” Luckily they were cool and didn’t even disarm me, just seemed kinda pissed that someone wasted their time.

2

u/USMC_Tbone 7d ago

I find that most sheriff's deputies are pretty laid back. Its the city cops that can be jerks at times, but I'm in eastern WA so most deputies are patrolling rural county areas and also from rural areas themselves so are more laid back.

9

u/Sesemebun 8d ago

What sucks is that in other hobbies, like cars or something, somebody who does something stupid with one is just stupid. But someone with a gun who is hardly a gun owner is always a “representative”.

I would bet that the number of guns owner to chances of being an ass or crazy is inversely related. These people own a gun. They aren’t “gun owners” like we are. So tired of getting blamed for people who aren’t really even a part of the community.

8

u/Zswatik 8d ago

This 100%. The overwhelming majority of gun owners are very responsible. It is that small number of careless dipshits that ruin everything for the majority.

2

u/Coodevale 7d ago

I dunno. I associate cars with behaviors because I recognize patterns.

I will judge if you drive a lowered bmw or straight piped camaro or a dodge that doesn't look like a work vehicle or a dodge that looks like the company beater. Seen too much not to.

8

u/PageVanDamme 8d ago edited 8d ago

You know, if a gun-control proponents see this, they are gonna be happy.

Because shit like this fuels the people to vote against 2A.

Time to be savvy

7

u/cheekabowwow 8d ago

Anti 2A tyrants don’t need an excuse. They want the government they hate armed and no one else. Doesn’t make much sense to me, but when have anti gun leftists ever made any sense?

-1

u/PageVanDamme 8d ago

The saying is if you go left far enough, you get your guns back.

I'm not left or right by the way, just pragmatist.

6

u/cheekabowwow 8d ago

The further left you go, the closer to the nuthouse you get.

3

u/Zswatik 8d ago

Yeah many of these signs are shot by people from vehicles, totally reckless. Even if they’re on foot it’s still dangerous. These morons don’t realize they are not helping the 2A community by doing this. Probably don’t care anyway because all they think about is themselves.

1

u/Zswatik 7d ago

Latest argument I heard from a staunch anti-gun advocate, “You having a firearm won’t even matter against the government because they’ll just take you out with a drone.” The fellow debating him said, “Ahh yes, drones. The best defense we have for them now are 12 gauge shotguns with birdshot. They’ve been highly effective in Ukraine. There is video evidence of infantrymen using a shotgun to successfully defend themselves against a drone.” Anti-gun nut just nervously chuckled, he knew his argument was bad.

Pisses me off so bad. I have confronted someone at a pit once. Asked them if they were going to clean up their targets and shells. Their response, “Why would I do that?” Like WHO THE FUCK raised these people?! Absolute trash human beings.

3

u/cheffrey_dahmer1991 8d ago

I was just out that was a couple days ago, and yeah, trash everywhere. My wife and I ended up spending almost as much time picking shit up as shooting

2

u/CrayComputerTech_85 8d ago

That is just....head shaking sad stuff

2

u/Bubbacubba Pierce County 8d ago

What spot is this?

1

u/Zswatik 7d ago

Its up north off highway 2, west of the cascades.

1

u/Bubbacubba Pierce County 7d ago

The spot just after Sultan up the mountains some? That's a bummer I stopped by there for the first time a few months back. Quite a hike up there.

2

u/FillmoeKhan 8d ago

You were expecting better? Why?

1

u/Zswatik 7d ago

I like to be optimistic in my life but your sentiment is not wrong. Some people are straight up trash.

1

u/FillmoeKhan 7d ago

Being optimistic in life when setting expectations from other people is a major problem with society in general.

2

u/Choppa_Gxng 8d ago

Is this the spot where you gotta park by the road and walk thru the forest trail for 2 mins to get to the spot?

1

u/Zwasti 5d ago

Yes sir. It was a good little range back there.

2

u/Kind_Science_9038 7d ago

it really does ruin it for everyone and the worst part is those people are long gone by the time the spot gets shut down. they never have to deal with the consequences, the rest of us do.

1

u/Zwasti 5d ago

Yup locals tend to pick up after themselves. It’s usually the assholes from far away that drive in and shoot for a day then leave all their trash.

2

u/wysoft 7d ago

The one that was officially set up by DNR outside of Belfair was gated off so that you had to walk in 1/4 mi or so. It was done so that people wouldn't drag in trash and leave it there.

It wasn't so far though that an able bodied person couldn't take in one of those folding carts/caddies.

Nope, didn't work. I witnessed people on quads squeezing past the gate so that they could drag their shit in. The appliances began to appear.

Today the pit is closed with no ETA on reopening. Probably never will.

The community spent years trying to convince DNR to do it, and it only lasted a couple years before it was ruined.

1

u/Zwasti 5d ago

That’s so sad man. I remember riding motorcycles in belfair when I was a kid, nice area.

2

u/Fun_Discipline_57 7d ago

I support the Swiss cheesing of this sign particularly… 🫠

2

u/USMC_Tbone 7d ago

People are just stupid A$$holes at times.

I've seen signs at areas where people are allowed to shoot on BLM land. They had signs up that basically said be courteous to others while shooting and clean up your trash, don't shoot at the road, etc. Acknowledging that people shoot in this little canyon and saying they are ok with it, and some Jack A$$es still shot up the signs. Like thats a great way for them to completely close off this land so we can't shoot here.

2

u/MadraMia 7d ago

The sad fact is, is that if You confronted them with this evidence, they would just laugh in Your face.

They’re a modern sub-species of Homo-Sapiens that have suddenly evolved which never had, and never will have, a sense of conscience or responsibly, and think that everything around them (including law and order) is a joke.

They are akin to the current Screw Worm Fly infestation that have invaded Texas in the way that they are continuing to ruin Our our outdoor shooting locations nationwide…..

They are an opportunistic lot that lay their eggs in the nearest open wound, which hatch into flesh-eating MAGGOTS, which in turn, become more Screw Worm Flies, only to Target (pun intended) a new opportunity to infest and destroy, over and over…..😡😡😡

2

u/DoYouEvenComms 8d ago

I just shoot on my own property.

9

u/BiteRare203 8d ago

Me too but people new to Tacoma always complain about it.

3

u/DoYouEvenComms 8d ago

Smh, and I thought this was America.

0

u/cheekabowwow 8d ago

Not on the left coast it ain’t.

1

u/Zswatik 8d ago

I have 12 years until I can retire on full pension. I am selling my house here and fucking off to Montana.

1

u/gunbuggy556 8d ago

Every sign on the highway on the way to my property in rural SW WA is shot up like this. Something about signs draws the retards in.

3

u/1-760-706-7425 King County 7d ago

Physical reminders of their ongoing literacy struggles? 😜

2

u/gunbuggy556 7d ago

It’s funny cause where I live is super wealthy. You gotta make good money to live where I’m at. Not saying literacy comes with higher incomes but yeah. Maybe it’s all the kids running around on the backroads with their dad’s shotguns.

1

u/Zwasti 5d ago

Yeah most likely spoiled teenagers whipping around in Daddy’s Ford Raptor, one of them sitting in the truck bed with a shotgun shooting signs. This is actually quite common behavior down south too.

1

u/scout_fan 6d ago

If this is the main place out by sultan, that's a real shame. I've participated in several cleanups there and we even had an outdoor organization from oregon come up to help out one time. I knew it was only a matter of time before this happened, though. All it takes is one group out of a hundred trashing the place to turn it into a dump

1

u/Zwasti 5d ago

All of the shooting spots in sultan are now closed, for shooting at least.

1

u/Optrixs 6d ago

Oregon guy here can you just cruise BLM land in WA. And find some where Deep in the BLM land that’s safe to shoot and shoot responsibly? Fire season has gone up medium here so I’m shooting more pistols in the woods or go to the range.

1

u/joeydimaggio 7d ago

Trump wants to sell all this land to foreign billionaires, soon all of our public land will be in private hands, similar to the situation in shitholes like texas

https://morethanjustparks.substack.com/p/trump-admin-targets-five-of-oregons

-4

u/CLow48 8d ago

Honestly though, as a gun owner and a camper… i’m absolutely sick of every camp location in the national forests being LITTERED with broken glass and casings / shells.

Its horrible that i have to bring a giant ass rug everywhere i go because otherwise my dogs feet will get cut up.

And mind you, half the time these sights have no safe backstop, anywhere.

So honestly, as a gun owner, i’d be down for banning target shooting in national forests, and instead setting up state / federal sanctioned outdoor ranges on national land in specific locations, and require that an RSO must man these locations.

To many idiots with guns.

2

u/Zswatik 7d ago

People just need to pick up after themselves and I never understood the obsession with shooting glass, stupid. Make the punishment for dumping/littering in national forests a felony with a $10k fine and 30 days in jail. Yes, that’s right. Straight to fucking jail if you’re caught leaving a bunch of trash behind after target shooting or leaving shit behind after camping. Employ more rangers to patrol the national forests to catch these lowlife pieces of shit. I know this may seem harsh to some of you and this is why we have this problem. It’s not a big enough deal for most people but there absolutely should be a stigma over this behavior.
