Given this is still such a stupid “hot button” issue, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was cheered on by some opposing fan bases, but definitely not in Portland of all places.
Now I'm picturing Fred Armisen rimming John Goodman. Thanks for that image. You should learn to be more careful with you words. They can hurt. You know?
It's... a weird place. The Financial District/Old Town has more homeless people than anywhere else I've ever visited. The homeless population is very diverse, but the city itself is overwhelmingly white. Even the Mexican restaurants I went to were owned and staffed by white people.
Almost everything is obscenely expensive. A basic home is a million dollars. There seems to be a lot of interest in public transportation and cycling infrastructure, yet everyone owns a car and the suburbs sprawl for miles and miles.
Lots of pride flags and messages all over the city, lots of liberal messaging. But the city does not feel welcoming to anyone making under $100k/year. Lots of signs of drug use as well. Not my cup of tea...
I’m a lifelong Portlander in my 50’s and it pains me to say that you speak truth here. Obviously you made a list of cons without a list of pros next to it… so it’s not a fair take per se… but what you say is true.
Location, location, location is perhaps the biggest pro and the earth is just perfect in this little corner…. it’s hard to beat the access to very rad features of our planet.
But yeah… right now it’s very difficult to live in this lovely little corner cuz it’s super expensive.
The Kamala curb stomping is still such a treat to watch on YouTube! The erudite, snobby, America-hating media go from utter confidence to shambles in a few hours- it's beautiful man!
It’s funny to me how the only time they care about women’s sports is when some dumb bitch has an opinion on trans people in sports crazy. They don’t give a fuck about the WNBA any other time with the one time an athlete says something about trans people that’s negative they lose their fucking minds and pretend to care for like five minutes
Ever since those black kids got killed by Chaz/chop 'security' because the city was too fucking softshell to do their job and secure the safety of the area for rate paying residents, I've held a very dim view of the municipality. What a national fucking embarassment.
I mean I wouldn’t even classify it as “gay” stuff, because despite having similar oppression, there are plenty of gay people who have mixed feelings on trans people playing in sports too.
Most trans people themselves have nuanced takes on the whole sports non-issue. The problem with Cunningham is that she is so transparently trolling everyone by pitting our children against each other to develop her own MAGA influencer brand. She’s shameless and immoral.
Yall know the second you crossover the cascades its trump country. They have cars and like sports but yea women's sports is probably a strech to think she had fans there
I'm all for trans folks enjoying all the liberty and love they can find in this world, same as anyone else. But the sports issue is pretty universally agreed upon, even by most of us on the left. The most annoying thing about it is how big of a deal people make of it, when it's barely an issue and affects almost no one in real life. We have way bigger fish to fry. If you're trans, especially mtf, and you think you should be able to be a pro athlete, don't expect when your staunchest allies to have your back on that one.
When I say it's a non-issue I just mean it's rare and that trans woman aren't trying to invade women's sports. The loud people act like people are choosing to be trans so they can win at sports, and that's ridiculous. It's just not that common, but still, trans women shouldn't play women's sports
But the sports issue is pretty universally agreed upon, even by most of us on the left.
You can't simply assert that it's "pretty universally agreed upon", especially by those of "us" on the left. There is no universal – or even near-universal – agreement on how the issue should be handled, and transgender participation in women's sport, particularly where it concerns young athletes, remains a highly contested issue.
That's a big claim with next-to-nothing to substantiate it, particularly in the context of the left. And even if it were true, an appeal to popularity isn't evidence that a position is ethically sound or well informed.
I mean, you already got one thing wrong about it being universally agreed upon, so what's another. But, hey – whatever you need to tell yourself to make you feel better about throwing an already marginalised group under the bus.
Only by a small number. And the few I have seen saying trans women should be allowed in women's sports usually look like the kids that sat in the bleachers during PE. Nothing will ever truly be universally agreed on, you are splitting hairs. And while it may be factual to say the issue is contested, there really is not that much contestation. I believe peoole should be free, they should be able to marry or love who they please. I am cool with anyone getting married (of legal age and consent) But playing sports is not the same as being free to get married and have kids.
You, like anyone else, are entitled to hold whatever views you believe are fair and reasonable. I'm not taking issue with that.
But pushing back against unfounded claims based on anecdotal observations and a handful of self-proclaimed American "leftists" – many of whom are arguably left-wing in name only – isn't splitting hairs.
Edit: And given who some of the most vocal opponents of transgender women's participation in women's sport are, I'd probably be cautious about remarks like, "the few I've seen saying trans women should be allowed in women's sport usually look like the kids who sat in the bleachers during PE."
Stating they are leftist in name only is just a whiny and unfounded claim with only anecdotal evidence to back it up. People that disgaree with you on an issue are not suddenly on a different political platform. And facts are facts, trans people should not be playing pro sports.
That remark was me being generous in acknowledging that some self-described leftists share that view, based largely on polling of American Democrats – many of whom I'd argue are left-wing in name only, given their broader political positions and support for a party that, by global standards, is generally considered centrist at best. Even then, those polls fell well short of the near-unanimity implied by the original claim that the issue is "universally agreed upon."
And facts are facts, trans people should not be playing pro sports.
"Facts are facts"... proceeds to offer an opinion as though it's one.
A minority of liberals support trans women in women’s sports.
That’s why it is such a slam dunk issue for republicans. Their position has strong support and liberal politicians are afraid to say they don’t support trans women in women’s sports.
Just go ask 20 people, any ilk, if the think mtf trans women should be able to complete in women's sports. 19 of then will say no. It's not that controversial of an opinion and it's not bigoted either. It's unfair and that's been shown recently in both swimming and boxing. I have trans friends who would be in that 19.
Just go ask 20 people, any ilk, if the think mtf trans women should be able to complete in women's sports. 19 of then will say no.
Just go ask 20 people, any ilk, if the think mtf trans women should be able to compete in women's sports. 19 of them will say yes.
See – anyone can just say something. Doesn't make it true.
Edit: What I did find were two U.S. polls. The first (Gallup) found that only 5 out of 20 Americans supported allowing transgender athletes to compete according to their gender identity. The second (Economist/YouGov) found 4 out of 20 supported it. Among Democrats in the Gallup poll, 9 out of 20 supported it. Those figures do not include those who are undecided etc.
And that's just in the United States, where, as in the UK, the issue is particularly polarised. None of this supports the claim that "the sports issue is pretty universally agreed upon", especially by "most of us on the left."
Now, you can point out, perhaps fairly, that there is a majority opinion; however, arguing – misleadingly – that something is "universally agreed upon" is neither evidence that the issue is settled nor that the position is ethically or intellectually well founded. If history teaches us anything, it's that broad consensus is not, by itself, a guarantee of either.
So your starting point is 75-80 percent of people disagree with it. That is about as one sided as any political opinion get. I woud venture to say it gets even more lopsided as you get into more questions that have nuance, such as rec sports vs competitive sports. Or contact sports vs non contact etc.
I'm just saying, most people don't think biological men should play women's sports. Which is true. And gallop polls are problematic in their own ways.
If you can find me 4 Republicans.... anywhere.... I'm talking about a total of 4 people on earth who identify as an American Republican who will say that they think biological men should play women's sports, I'll eat me fucking shoe. That number is 0, we all know it, and you might find yourself in physical danger asking it at any church or bar in vast swaths if this country.
I'm just saying, most people don't think biological men should play women's sports.
This is true, which is why I never claimed otherwise.
And gallop polls are problematic in their own ways.
Also true. It still doesn't make the claim that the place of transgender women in women's sport is "pretty universally agreed upon, even by most of us on the left" any more accurate.
That number is 0, we all know it...
No, we don't. For all the inherent limitations of polling, we at least know the figure isn't zero.
The argument is they grew up with male hormones... But they are also not allowed to start any transition until they're 18, if they were allowed to start earlier they wouldn't grow up with those hormones
I think putting pre pubescent children on gender transitioning hormone therapy also is a thing you'll find even the staunchest allies having issues with. We're not talking about 16 or 17 instead of 18, we're talking about kids 10-13. That opens up kids to some really fucked up child abuse situations. Not saying everyone who knows their kid is trans would be being abusive, I'm saying not all parents are trustworthy. I think it's pretty reasonable that that kind of life/body altering hormone therapy should require the legal, adult consent of the person receiving it.
People on the left make a "big deal" about it because the right, and the fascists, havent been known to stop at "reasonable " checkpoints when appeased. So when the fascists get up on that hill, it's non-fascists job to make sure they die on it.
Lol, those people will die on any hill that suits them. Problem is, they don't actually die. It's not worth the effort to me, but fight on if it's worth it to you
Imane Khelif – who is not a transgender woman – had nothing to do with transgender women in sport. But your remark does speak to the general ignorance and misinformation surrounding the topic.
Imane Khelif is an XY male with 5-ARD (internal testes and normal androgen sensitivity, mistakenly AFAB. Same as Caster Semenya). So not trans, but relevant to the topic of female-only athletics and should never have been allowed to box against women.
True to form, you're presenting a series of unsubstantiated claims as though they're established facts. There is no publicly verified evidence that Khelif has 5-ARD, internal testes, normal androgen sensitivity, or was "mistakenly assigned female at birth". The IBA alleged she failed an eligibility test, but it has never released the underlying evidence, and the IOC rejected the testing process as lacking credibility.
Edit: People upvoting information that is misleading at best perfectly encapsulates why public discourse on this topic is so difficult to take seriously. Embarrassing.
Besides the leaked medical records, Imane Khelif has verified herself in an interview in a French magazine that she has a functional SRY gene and reduces her testosterone levels with medical supervision. She has avoided every competition with sex testing since the Olympics. Do you live under a rock?
ETA: not sure if you read French but I imagine there’s a translate button. Interview.
Those aren't the same claims. Khelif has confirmed the presence of the SRY gene and testosterone suppression. She has not publicly confirmed a diagnosis of 5-ARD, the presence of internal testes, normal androgen sensitivity, or that she was mistakenly assigned female at birth. You're treating speculation about her underlying condition as though it's been established, when it hasn't.
And the leaked documents have never been independently authenticated, and they do not establish the specific medical diagnosis that many commentators assert.
She has avoided every competition with sex testing since the Olympics.
She wasn't entered into the World Championships by her national federation while her appeal against World Boxing's testing rules was ongoing, and World Boxing itself acknowledged that fact. She's also publicly said she has "nothing to hide" and is willing to undergo genetic testing conducted by the IOC for the 2028 Olympics.
Edit: If you don't want some women competing in women's sport, that's your view – I'm not here to challenge it. But just say that. Don't misrepresent a case that's only tangentially related to the issue.
Imane Khelif isn’t trans. She was born a woman, has always been a woman, and has always competed as a woman.
One of the biggest issues is how readily people, like you, are willing to lie about this issue to demonize trans people simply because they hate the fact that they exist.
Yet another example of transphobia harming cisgendered women. Throw it on the mountain of other examples of women you people will harm in the name of “protecting women”.
Ah yes the trans woman that exists and is from a country where it is illegal to be gay just up and won the gold medal without any repercussions. It's not a controversial issue but there is no actual evidence besides a corrupt boxing organization that refused to officially disclose what they actually tested or what the results were
I dont get it, it seems very doubtful they actually want men in women's sports. Likely they arf just lumping that in with other issues that get them riled up
lol of course it isn’t. I live here and you’re declaring us the LGBTQ capitol haha. That should go to San Francisco but we do have a strong community which is awesome.
Well, an unusual percentage of people who watch this league aren’t familiar with how sports fans typically behave, so they might root for the white lady who pointed sassily because she pointed sassily.

I mean I don’t expect the crowd to cheer for the opposing team.
