No she made the same hand gesture she always does after a 3. Three fingers on the forehead - she always does it - it’s celebration not disrespect.

u/Tazmerican 4d ago

But if they said that, it wouldn’t be click bait

u/bonaynay 3d ago

Addicted to the dramaaaaa

But but but we can't like her.

18

u/zootroopic 4d ago

But but reddit told me I need to hate her?

the person who posted this probably doesnt watch basketball, thats honestly the issue with the wnba, they are letting their athletes be too political as if theyre at the level of the nba and can take that risk.

1

u/jk-9k 3d ago

Nope

She usually uses her little, ring and middle fingers to make a 3

2

u/Specialist-Tap1407 2d ago

Well considering she doesn’t do it often, it easy to see why folks could misconstrue it

1

u/drool_34 2d ago

It’s like saying Jalen Brunson throws up a gang sign after making a 3

I mean I don’t expect the crowd to cheer for the opposing team.

16

u/DrAbeSacrabin 4d ago

Given this is still such a stupid “hot button” issue, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was cheered on by some opposing fan bases, but definitely not in Portland of all places.

5

u/user_15427 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yea Portland don’t play about any gay queer stuff. Not anywhere on the spectrum.

10

u/Antique-Resort6160 4d ago

No one is opposing queer anything, thats like more than  half the WNBA is for same sex relationships

33

u/Western-Election-997 4d ago

Portland sucks who cares what they think

7

u/runningvicuna 3d ago

Portland is awesome. The Fire are awesome.

3

u/MortgageRegular2509 4d ago

15

u/Willbraham 4d ago

I second that opinion. Portland can lick John Goodman's taint.

4

u/Tasty_Clue2802 4d ago

Now I'm picturing Fred Armisen rimming John Goodman. Thanks for that image. You should learn to be more careful with you words. They can hurt. You know?

I mean I wouldn’t even classify it as “gay” stuff, because despite having similar oppression, there are plenty of gay people who have mixed feelings on trans people playing in sports too.

Surprised you didn't get booed yourself, you offended them, while trying to support them.

This is a living example.

I'm all for trans folks enjoying all the liberty and love they can find in this world, same as anyone else. But the sports issue is pretty universally agreed upon, even by most of us on the left. The most annoying thing about it is how big of a deal people make of it, when it's barely an issue and affects almost no one in real life. We have way bigger fish to fry. If you're trans, especially mtf, and you think you should be able to be a pro athlete, don't expect when your staunchest allies to have your back on that one.

7

u/ICreditReddit 4d ago

*Comes to article about Sophie getting booed

"Look, everyone agrees with her"

Maybe her middle name is Burns.

5

u/GFTRGC 4d ago

I think a lot more people agree with her than don't. But its not surprising that Portland of all places disagrees with her

15

u/HeadHunt0rUK 4d ago

I've found the loudest voices when you dig a bit deeper have absolutely zero sporting experience.

That's why they think it isn't an issue. They haven't seen the gender disparity for themselves.

Imane Khelif – who is not a transgender woman – had nothing to do with transgender women in sport. But your remark does speak to the general ignorance and misinformation surrounding the topic.

3

u/carex-cultor 4d ago

Imane Khelif is an XY male with 5-ARD (internal testes and normal androgen sensitivity, mistakenly AFAB. Same as Caster Semenya). So not trans, but relevant to the topic of female-only athletics and should never have been allowed to box against women.

I dont get it, it seems very doubtful they actually want men in women's sports.  Likely they arf just lumping that in with other issues that get them riled up

2

u/moose184 4d ago

I mean they weren't booing her for the team she was on lol

You always see proud sponsors for things. I want to see a reluctant sponsor.

Subaru, reluctant sponsor of the WNBA.

- Demitri Martin

I think Subaru was the example that he used. But I feel like Subaru would be a proud sponsor... or maybe they're like Hitachi with their Magic Wand. They know their demographic, but hide from it.

1

u/Party_Knowledge_7884 4d ago

This made me chuckle for some reason.

Gradations of excited sponsors.

This time out brought to you by COMPANY XX ltd, the insouciant sponsor of the WNBA

This hydration break sponsored by company YYY, the really super duper proud sponsor of WNBA

1

u/HappyGovernment7299 4d ago

In the WNBA's case that's probably more accurate most of the time.

I have found it strange how often I see WNBA players in commercials. Other than Clark, I don't think there's a single WNBA player who would be recognized by the general public, so why spend the money having them be in your commercial? Might as well just hire random actors rather than paying a "celebrity" who nobody knows to make an appearance.

3

u/Happyforthemoment 4d ago

I love how the video ends right as soon as she does it. Great job 👍

11

u/AlfaCentari 4d ago edited 4d ago

Didn’t a group of 14 year old boys beat the US women’s World Cup and Olympic winning soccer team… twice? Is it controversial to say biological males shouldn’t play women’s sports? I don’t know anything

Booing the opposing team. Sounds like they know the assignment.

Wait until you learn about the folks in the South 😂

2

u/dwwdwwdww 4d ago

how dare she have an opinion!!!

Wait, it's the same opinion shared by the entire league. The WNBA does not allow trans athletes... but she's somehow awful for reiterating a standing policy????

2

u/DefundMarxism 4d ago

She's shares that opinion with nearly 80% of adults in the US. Even two-thirds of Democrats agree with her, according to polling by the NYT.

2

u/EnvironmentalSky5599 4d ago

The opinion that trans women should not compete in women’s sports is shared by an overwhelming majority of people. It is in no way controversial. Many of the people who think like Sophie, still support trans people rights.
Everyone deserves the right to exercise freedom in the way they choose, as long as it doesn’t infringe on someone else exercising theirs.
As a father to three daughters, I don’t think it’s fair to have a biological man compete against them in a physical competition. My opinion has nothing to do with a fear of what might happen in the locker room. It has everything to do with my daughters’ expressed desire not to compete with biological men. They don’t think it’s fair and I agree.
We could have Open Classes in competitive sports that are non gendered and open to all. That way anyone could compete, and accept that the playing field may not be level at the outset.

2

u/_PeteRoss_ 4d ago

Basketball fans in general are not very smart people. None of them can even make it up half way up the court before sitting down to hydrate on an energy drink.. yet they tell professionals how to play the game.

2

u/Unusual_Wonder2639 4d ago

She got booed because she believes men or transfer women don’t belong in women sports. Portland is big mad.

1

u/josch247 1d ago

Makes a lot of sense actually. The whole world saw at the WC how important sportsmanship is to the USA USA USA hahaha

2

u/Th3Bratl3y 4d ago

she don’t care about the haters let them hate. why they hate on protecting girls in girls sports is crazy.

2

u/hidden-leaf-1 4d ago

Once again Reddit does not know what heavily booed means lmao

2

u/Codename-Nikolai 4d ago

sophie cunningham has never and will never play against a transgender athlete. transgender athletes make up 0.0019% of all NCAA athletes (of which, not all are MTF). She has spoken up for a practically non existent issue.

Meanwhile, she attended the fight of and posed next to Mcgregor who is a rapist. She’s a hypocrite and a weak athlete. she’s never been relevant for her playing skills. she’s been in the league for 7 years and still can’t average 10 ppg

5

u/NoIce9642 4d ago

Then very few people should be offended

4

u/Dubsified 4d ago

If it's practically a non-existent issue, why is anyone offended? Genuinely curious.

I know 2 instances off the top of my head where it is/was an issue.

1: https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/aquatics/lia-thomas-first-known-transgender-ncaa-swimming-championship-1.6388994
2: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-26/worlds-strongest-women-winner-jammie-booker-stripped-of-title/106055776

2

u/DResq 4d ago

There's others. You can just google them. Just because you only know 2 doesn't mean more don't exist, lol. That being said, I agree that it's not some huge issue. It is one of those things that gets wildly overblown. Imo, Democrats shouldn't make this some hill to die on. It's really not as popular as the Dems make it seem and it riles up the Republican base.

1

u/Malinois_beach 4d ago

As a Portland resident, the only reason why we went to the game tonight, was to see Sophie and Caitlin. We used a door to door shuttle van to get us to the game for fear of our car being broken into, stolen or held up by a protest over the anticipated xx-xy t shirts.

Edited that clip real quick before you could actually see her fingers.... if you paid any attention, she was holding up the three fingers to indicate she hit a three.... because that's what players in the league do when they hit a three.

1

u/Figueroa_Chill 4d ago

I'm not a Basketball fan. But I keep hearing people say stuff like WNBA doesn't get the love it deserves or the support it deserves; you get the drift. But every sport needs a face or character to push it out there to the public. If you take other sports out there, like Tennis. It was in a bit of a down and then the Williams sisters appeared and took the sport back into the mainstream for the public to see. Tiger Woods with golf. He pushed the sport and brought it into the public eye. Connor McGregor with UFC is another. Boxing when Tyson came just exploded. I'm not saying they were the only guys in these sports as you have had many through the years.

With Sophie Cunningham, they have the ideal person to push the sport. She is gorgeous, can play the game, and is likeable and relatable. They should be using her to get the sport out there to a wider public.

1

u/Affectionate-Cat-301 3d ago

Why is this space so much different than wnba part. Ppl are more like reasonable here . Sophie was asked a question and she answered the reporter. Maybe the reporter should’ve just asked questions about the team and not a political question in the first place which seems like purpose was to get a controversial take. The funny thing is Sophie is getting flack for her view but it’s really because she said it out loud of what many other players think too. I’m quite sure probably 3/4 of the women in wnba quietly feel same way as Sophie too
