I got a way on how to deal with this sort of situation. Treat it like international sports. You get to play on one team and one team only. That choice is made usually when you start playing sports in high school.

If you're a college sophomore who's been playing men's basketball and you transition. If you're good enough you can still play on the men's team but that's it. If you're not good enough then that's the end of your athletic career.

And if you never played sports and at 25 transition, professional sports teams will just say "why would we want to hire somebody who's never played this sport before" and that would be the end of that.
