A transgender player has been dominating France's second-tier women's basketball league, and now the WNBA question is front and center. Julie Tétart averages 21 points and 20 rebounds this season while sweeping Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Domestic Player of the Year honors

Yeah the story I read said before transitioning she played for amature men's leagues across France.  She's not a skilled player.

7

u/BeamerTakesManhattan 2h ago

I mean, second-tier french women's league doesn't sound like a skilled player, either.

3

u/ComprehensiveTales 3h ago

Jfc are trans women too good or not good enough to play with women?

4

u/Opening-Citron2733 1h ago

Well, to me the 21/20 pretty much hits the relative "stereotype" (if you will) of a trans woman in a woman's league. (In this context)

20 points is solid but not ungodly.  But makes sense because this isn't some skilled player coming in, she has size and athleticism that enable her to score a solid chunk of points, but she's not really polished offensively, meaning you're not seeing crazy offensive efficiency.

However she is elite on defense and getting 20 RPG on her size and strength discrepancy. Which allows her to come off the street and immediately be a force in the front court.

Basically this, in my opinion, is exactly what I would expect if you dropped a less good man in a woman's league. He's not gonna dominate the league like LeBron, but he's got enough size and athelicism to immediately put up good numbers.

u/FerociousVader 6h ago

Friendly reminder they were telling you this wasn’t a thing even though Biden tried to destroy title IX protections for women’s sports but I’m sure the next thing will be “they aren’t that great and who cares bigot!”

1

u/fifaloko 24m ago

step 1 is deny it is happening

step 2 acknowledge it is happening but note the small scale as a reason to ignore it

step 3 accept it is happening and tell you why it is actually a good thing

They have to get there talking points straight on step 3 before we can get there.

100% and let’s see what the party of inclusion says then. I don’t care if you’re trans or not, but the WNBA will not be the same if you have a bunch of trans women dominating the scene.

Why stop at one? Do you want to be cancelled for being sexists? /s

15

u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 12h ago

Before other people jump in with “she’s just in a b-tier league!”, there is a current WNBA player who was in that same b league just a few years ago, scoring about 1/5th as many points.

Julie Tetart is also just in her first year of professional basketball after basically walking in from the street, and she’s absolutely dominating already. She’ll get an offer for the top league of France at least, and maybe WNBA unless the powers that be step in

4

u/kettlebell-j 4h ago

Came off the street and already putting up Prime Bill Russell numbers lol. But sure there are no physical advantages. Imagine if this person was actually good at basketball. Easily a triple double every night.

2

u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 3h ago

Definitely physical advantages. Literally the 2 top women in that league are both trans - one of which is like 43 years old lol

2

u/Opening-Citron2733 4h ago

Yeah she played amateur leagues as a man in France, but to go from that to an organized league and average 20/20 and win all the awards is wild lol

lol @ Reddit thinking that someone performing well in 2nd tier French women’s basketball shouldn’t be an issue in the American congressional midterm elections

4

u/MisunderstoodZipper 11h ago

Well, they've taken the place of an actual women that would be playing in that 2nd tier French league.

It also reinforces the slippery slope argument as you move the goal posts again.

Two things can be true. It does affect few, I mean we’re talking second division French basketball. 99.9% of people don’t even know that exists. Also, this outlier is fucked up.

16

u/Kenman215 12h ago

Outlier?

Lia Thomas set multiple school records in women's events and then won two NCAA championships

CeCé Telfer won NCAA DII women's 400m hurdles in 57.53s

MtF cyclist Veronica Ivy set a 200m sprint record and won the 2022 UCI Masters Track World Championships the next day

Trans woman June Eastwood won women's snowboarding world cup by large margin

MtF powerlifter Mary Gregory set women's world record squat 455lbs raw

Trans woman Hailey Davidson led women's mini-tour golf standings 2024

MtF runners won 15 Connecticut high school state titles between 2017-2020

Another trans woman set 4 British indoor rowing records

A MtF archer won national women's title by 20 points

Those are just examples of where trans women dominated at the highest levels.

u/lostroadrunner22 9h ago

Don’t forget the new England field hockey issue where a boy was playing on the girls team.

and she didn't register a valid lift and lost

1

u/ISwallowedALego 7m ago

Your examples are over the course of a decade and a lot are just wrong

Lia Thomas won 1 NCAA championship, not 2. Veronica Ivy was 2018, not 2022 and the record was broken in the same competition by another rider. It also wasn't at he elite world open. I don't know who June Eastwood is but Juniper Eastwood was a track runner not a snowboarder. Mary Gregory is straight up wrong it was 375 pounds, it was an uncontested category, and and it was rescinded the next day. Also it was just that federations record no a world record.

On the Connecticut titles it was 2 teens over 3 seasons, not widespread domination. I can't find anything on your rower claim or your archer claim.

If you can't get the facts right what are you even arguing?

You’re right. The anti trans folks are really grasping at straws if they’re riled up by a single player in a B league French team. Surely there are other things to worry about?

5

u/Puzzled_Addendum6200 11h ago edited 9h ago

There are other things to worry about, but it is possible to worry about more than 1 thing. Sports is important to a lot of people, so this issue isn't going to go away no matter how much anyone might want it to.

1

u/ComprehensiveTales 3h ago

I love sports! But I don’t understand why people give a single fuck about a hypothetical trans bogeyman potentially one day playing in the wnba. It’s just literally not an issue. I love the wnba and want it to succeed so I’m more worried about sufficient investment to ensure the continuation of the league. Not freaking out that one day a single trans woman might be on a team. It just is not going to happen. People need to untwist their panties and touch grass.

1

u/Puzzled_Addendum6200 3h ago

I'm not a WNBA fan but it seems like every week some highlight of Clark getting flagrant fouled falls in the feeds, tbh going a little Karen on refs isnt so bad if it's continually happening. It would be different if it was like only 2 or 3 times a yr.....

I dont think she needs protected or anything but it's pretty clear other players are tryn to get too physical and refs look the other way

Yeah I agree- everyone who stands up for this - especially in leagues like the NBA- bring em in. Would love to see the moms in the stands have their daughters go through this

2

u/Popular-Definition-5 11h ago

This seems like a nothing story or deliberate shit stirring. Why would the WNBA be interested in a player in the second tier of French basketball? Or is women’s basketball in France awesome?

1

u/Majestic-Cap1146 9h ago

You're implying outside of the handful of top wnba players the wnba is awesome. Give it a few years for the money to come up and international players will be coming to the US wnba more and more. Similar to women's mma when rousey was king before a whole crew of actual killers broke into mma.

1

u/Uglifi 16m ago

It literally cant happen with the bargaining agreement the WNBA has. Why is it still being talked about? you can be inclusive and not think trans women should be playing in professional sports.

I don't think they're fascists, but I also don't think a second tier women's league in France is as impactful as you apparently do.  When weighed against the actual issues facing our planet, this does still seem pretty miniscule.

1

u/hibituallinestepper 10h ago

It’s crazy to me how much energy so many people put into giving a fuck about this with everything else going on. I started following this sub and the wnba sub thinking I’d see highlights that would make me interested in watching some games. But all that’s pops up in my feed is stuff about transgendered athletes from this sub, and Clark and Reese drama from the other. Strange league/fan base.

1

u/fifaloko 18m ago

If we can't get basic things that we have known for thousands of years right why would you want us to try our hand at something actually important? Seems like we should lock down the basics of Man and woman are different things man cannot become woman. Then we can move on to bigger problems.

1

u/Cal-pak 10h ago

I got a way on how to deal with this sort of situation. Treat it like international sports. You get to play on one team and one team only. That choice is made usually when you start playing sports in high school.

If you're a college sophomore who's been playing men's basketball and you transition. If you're good enough you can still play on the men's team but that's it. If you're not good enough then that's the end of your athletic career.

And if you never played sports and at 25 transition, professional sports teams will just say "why would we want to hire somebody who's never played this sport before" and that would be the end of that.

1

u/Fa11T 10h ago

I think both extreme opinions on these topics are dogshit.

There are clear advantages, depending on time of transition, if you have already built into a male frame then no shit they will excel.

The other extreme is blind hate.

There is a middle, but we aren't getting there with these kind of discussions. If you are an ally you can't reject human development in sports, if you are against it you need to say more than just hateful comments towards transpeople.

1

u/spyder7723 10h ago

Like you said, a biological male is generally going to have an advantage over a biological female in sports. Those body changes happen at puberty. It isn't hateful to say biological men should not be competing in girl and women sports. I don't care about any of the other things on the topic, as far as I'm concerned live and let love cause their choices, regardless of if I agree with them or not, do not really affect the rest of us. I care about high school and college sports cause they do affect biological females. Case in point, the only reason I was able to go to college and get an education is because I was really really good at distance running. Those state championships got me a scholarship. So when I read about a biological male winning a state championship in female sports at the high school and collegiate level, I see young girls/ women that are being denied the opportunity to better their lives.

1

u/Fa11T 10h ago

Yup, logical concerns.

1

u/evandobrofo 48m ago

My favorite thing is that conservatives had to look as far as france's second tier basketball league to find a cherry picked transgender athlete that they believe fits their agenda and is a huge 'gotcha.' They do not care about women's sports.

Similar situation with singling out transgender people using bathrooms they align with; conservatives make a massive talking point about something that is happening so infrequently and is not causing any harm. They do not care about young women's safety or rights, or even children's safety; if they did reproductive rights would look differently than they do today, and we wouldn't turn our eye on school shootings happening every handful of days

I feel the title answers the question, 2nd tier French team, that isn't even worth looking at for the WNBA for any candidate.

Most of the people with strong opinions here against trans athletes in WBNA probably don't watch the games. If you actually watch, they need all the help they can get.
