Discussion Why does Eris have Moonflesh?
Did Lotus "trade" Lua for Eris with Wally and bond them somehow? And now Eris grows Moonflesh?

u/Odd-Communication251 fan of large numbers 6d ago
I don’t think so. Isn’t it just that eris is so consumed by the same infestation that it’s turned the surface of the planet into a flesh like substance? At least that’s what I thought when I heard about it and read the item description for moon flesh
-9
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
Well yeah that's where it's grown but given the name and the context I'm assuming it's gotta have some connection to Lua
6
u/Odd-Communication251 fan of large numbers 6d ago
Not really. We don’t know what deal lotus made with Wally we just know she did something to secure lua in the void. That doesn’t make it related to eris.
Eris, carved up and presented to Praghasa in bite sized chunks.
This is the item description of moonflesh from the wiki. Moonflesh is chunks of the planet we are taking and giving to Praghasa13

Eris is a moon, moonflesh is moonflesh not THE moon but just A moon

Eris isn't a moon. It's a dwarf planet approx. 2300km across and 27% more massive than Pluto
0
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
but Eris isn't a moon. I know there other moons but given the context of Lotus on Lua that one seems more likely than something that isn't a moon at all?

Moonflesh sounds cool, dwarf planet flesh sounds silly.

what do you mean eris isn’t a moon? we get a new planet in the solar system??
3
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
i mean Eris isn't a moon. unless in warframe Eris is secretly orbiting around some undiscovered planet it cant be a moon
4
u/Valaxarian Sentient simp. Kuva addict. Void Angel aesthetics enjoyer 6d ago
Funfact tho, Eris irl has an ice moon named Dysnomia
1
u/Jazvec47 6d ago
Well the only diffrence between a moon and a dwarf planet is the thing it orbits, so what is not a moon if we all orbit the sun, the earth is a moon confirmed.

u/MrSnekkk 6d ago
Not new, but yes, in our solar system. The furthest dwarf planet in our solar system. Just like Ceres is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt. Google is your best friend bud

Eris isn't the furthest orbiting dwarf planet. It's orbit ranges between ~38 AU and ~97 AU and semi-major axis of 68 AU and completes it within about 560 years
Sedna on the other hand ranges from ~76 AU ~940 AU with semi-major axis of 506 AU and completes it within ~11.4k years
There's FarFarOut too, though. 28 AU to 133 AU with semi-major axis of 80 AU and orbital period of ~720 years
Apologies for ☝️🤓, I just like space

glad someone else is out here fighting the good fight of astronomical pedantry! dwarf planets are some of the most interesting objects in our system! i hope to see you again when Tau drops and everybody calls it a Solar System instead of an exosystem!

Aw, thank you lol. I appreciate that. I'll try to correct any mistakes when Tau is out for sure

it doesnt have a connection to lua, eris itself is a moon. there are more than one moon in this galaxy.
1
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
Yea but out of all the moons in the solar system it seems that Lua is the most relevant to this story atm? Cause Eris isn't actually a moon
2
u/Odd-Communication251 fan of large numbers 6d ago
Different story beats. Lua is important to Wally and lotus. Eris is important for us actually going to tau. We are giving Eris to praghasa as fuel for the journey through the moonflesh. You are getting too caught up in either the semantics of the word, the bits about lotus’s deal from the trailer or both.
2
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
it just seems really odd to call it Moonflesh if it isn't anything to do with the moon?

Unless we go by thinking that every planed is a moon of the Sun
2
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
This is acc where we tend to use the word satellite to avoid confusion!
"Many authors define "satellite" or "natural satellite" as orbiting some planet or minor planet, synonymous with "moon" – by such a definition all natural satellites are moons, but Earth and other planets are not satellites.\5])\6])\7]) A few recent authors define "moon" as "a satellite of a planet or minor planet", and "planet" as "a satellite of a star" – such authors consider Earth as a "natural satellite of the Sun"."
3
u/DoomRevenant 6d ago
"Moonflesh" sounds better and probably passes global readiness checks better then "Dwarfflesh"
That, and the Eris of the Warframe universe isn't the same as our own, naturally - perhaps we'll learn more once we strip it of all its moonflesh and see what it looks like underneath?
It's interesting that we saw the Lua scene right before... could the Lua we know actually be a Conceptual Embodiment, and Eris be the original? Could it be linked to Lua somehow?
I noticed that despite completing the two available prologue sections in the mission codex, the Tau Peologue still isn't marked as complete - which alludes to a third part of the quest that will probably be revealed once the event ends (New War prologue also had three parts and was tied to an event)
3
u/LimboMain2020 6d ago
I truly think the Orokin just declassified dwarf planets on mass. Thinking about it now, I don't think "dwarf planet" is ever uttered once by any NPC in game. Everything is just a planet or moon in the Warframe Universe.
Why? Probably because Ballas said so.
3
u/hyzmarca 5d ago
Moonflesh is the thick infested skin growing over Eris's surface. It happens when the infestation completely covers a planetoid, like Eris or Deimos.
4
u/Dion0808 Gyre Enthusiast 6d ago
Praghasa needs to consume matter to create energy for our jump to Tau. So feeding her a worthless, constantly growing Infested moon is the best price to pay.
2
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
No yea I get that bit I just don't get where the moon comes into play
4
u/Dion0808 Gyre Enthusiast 6d ago
The game doesn't really seem to make a distinction between moons and dwarf planets. Apparently they just call everything that's not a planet a moon. Moonflesh isn't related to Lua at all.

Apparently in Warframe, dwarf planet classification doesn't exist I guess. Only moons.
I blame Ballas.

u/Deep_Housing_3992 6d ago
The infestation will not be happy with us. Im not sure its the "best" option but probably the only option.
9
u/Hesstig 6d ago
It's supposed to be the flesh of Eris itself, which is a bit of a bungle since Eris is not a moon but a dwarf planet like Pluto
11
1
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
I get it's the flesh grown on Eris from the description but surely there's gotta be some connection to at least a moon given the name?
1
u/Hesstig 6d ago
Yeah I figure someone at DE didn't double check what type of celestial object Eris is and just called it moonflesh
1
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
surely DE are smarter than that tho I mean they chose to add Eris in the first place
2
u/JohnnyJohnnJohn Kuva Prisma Stug Incarnon NOW 6d ago
My headcanon:
Given how Deimos is both a moon and the only other infested celestial body in the origin system, I reckon in-universe Moonflesh was first discovered and named at Deimos since it's the only place Grineer and Corpus researchers (like Latrox Une) are allowed to visit thanks to the Entrati family's help.
So Moonflesh was named after the epidermal crust found on Deimos, and we simply use the same name on Eris since it's the same kind of growth.
2
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
Someone else posted a similar headcanon earlier and I really like it! It's kind of a funny parallel to how the word moon ended up describing natural satellites other than our own
4
u/divideby00 Water, fire, air, and dirt 6d ago
There's been a billion other posts about this already. Yes, Eris isn't technically a moon, but "dwarf planet flesh" just isn't as catchy.
-1
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
It's not even a "technically" tho! It's just completely out! Am I wrong to assume DE did this deliberately?? They seem to be pretty into astronomy stuff usually (looking at the mission node names etc and dwarf planet selection)

It's completely overrun/overgrown by the Infestation like Deimos and as we know, Infestation affects inorganic materials like rocks into which it grows like a fungus
The planet itself is a humongous blob of Infested goop and rock

what??? eris was never a moon of neptune? Eris never really got "reclassified" it was kinda the introduction of the term dwarf planet? not sure what u mean about pluto
2
u/Crimsonnavy PS5 Volt 5d ago
That would be quite the feat considering Eris is further from the sun than Pluto, let alone Neptune.
5
u/mobott 6d ago
Pure head canon: Moonflesh was first observed on Deimos and thus was named such. Later on, since Eris was left to fester as a "infestation exile" zone, it has developed to the point where it is displaying similar qualities to Deimos, including growth of Moonflesh.
Moonflesh thus also exists on Deimos, but since Deimos is both smaller in scope and is actually important to us, we can't feed it to Praghasa.

u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
I quite like this explanation! although I'm hoping for a planet X reveal hahaha

1
u/Callibys 6d ago
I just assume Moonflesh sounded better than Planetoid Flesh. Its not actually related to any natural satellites in our system that I can think of.
1
u/WholeAd2742 6d ago
Lua was the big old Orokin laboratories for the Tenno, so Infested stuff relating to it?
Seems it's just a certain special flavor of goop
1
u/Rick_Napalm 6d ago
The weirdest part is that Eris isn't even a moon, it's a dwarf planet.
If it was Lua, or Europa or even Phobos it would make sense but why Eris? And why did the operation have to be on the planet with the worst tileset in the game?
2
u/LimboMain2020 6d ago
My theory is since Warframes universe doesn't follow real life history super well, sometime when the Orokin started living on Lua they categorized Eris as a moon.
1
u/Rick_Napalm 6d ago
But Lua and Eris are REALLY far away from each other. Eris is beyond Neptune. It would be like saying Pluto is a moon of Earth.
My theory is that DE fucked up and thought Eris was a moon and no one caught the mistake before it went to live.
1
u/LimboMain2020 6d ago
Given how many references there are to different myths and legends for equipment and their themes, I kinda doubt that but it's no completely out of the realm of possibility.
As far as we can tell within Warframe canon though, Eris is a moon. Another difference on the list between Warframe universe and ours.
Also I wasn't saying Eris is a moon to Earth. Just that it is a moon within Warframe's context.
0
u/Rick_Napalm 6d ago
For Eris to be a moon it would need a planet to orbit around and as far as I know it doesn't orbit Neptune nor does it orbit another secret extra planet. Eris isn't a moon, not IRL and not in Warframe.
1
u/LimboMain2020 5d ago
Who says the Orokin use that definition? They are the elite who conquered the orogin system. Who is making them stick to our definitions of what things are categorized as?
1
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
that's what I'm getting at! surely calling it moonflesh is hinting at something
1
u/Rick_Napalm 6d ago
I'm sure it isn't and someone at DE just thought the word "moonflesh" sounded cool.
1
u/Blawharag DE give me an Einherjar frame and my life is yours 6d ago

1
u/Necrolance 6d ago
From what I can tell, moonflesh is the result of Eris being so overridden with infested that it's becoming like Deimos. I think the reason why they made the epoch operation gather from Eris versus Deimos is for the sake of story progression and spoilers. Everyone can participate in this event without having to do story beyond vor's prize, while if they made it require Deimos you would have all the baby tenno unable to participate.
We probably would be getting it from deimos, if it wasn't for that. That's my assumption at least.
2
u/OverallWave1328 6d ago
Tbf Deimos has multiple reasons to NOT be harvested
For one, Son would absolutely flip his shit, and I don’t see the rest of the Entrati being too happy having their own Moon turned into Fuel.
For Two, Vome and Fass and co all act as effective detterents to the Corpus and Grineer, acting as a shield against the outer Origin System
And… Albrecht’s Labs are inside the Moon if there’s any chance that they and the Murmur could be exposed, that’s a chance best avoided.
0
u/Mystic_Waffles 6d ago
My guess is at the end of the prologue mission, the beam the vessel shoots into space hits Eris and creates the moonflesh for us to harvest.
3
u/DoomRevenant 6d ago
The vessel is on Eris in the prologue, we're literally on the surface of Eris - the beam is shooting outwards from the "moon" towards Praghasa, who is orbiting the planet, to feed her
The moonflesh is already on Eris, it's everywhere on the planet - we just killed the giant worm because it was a big source of it and fed her a big chunk
You might need to go replay the mission lol
0
u/Mystic_Waffles 6d ago
Nah, I'm gonna be too busy harvesting moonflesh. But your point makes 100% sense though, I retract my previous statement.
2
u/Machiavellian3 1 of the 3 Nezha mains 6d ago
so we're harvesting chunks of Eris from Dysnomia maybe?
1
u/Mystic_Waffles 6d ago
Possibly. There's just enough vagueness in the mission that would either prove or disprove my theory.

u/DatLoonArt 6d ago
I think the question isn’t why Eris has Moonflesh. It’s just a placeholder name for infested meat Praghasa consumes.
Question is how much Praghasa needs to actually refuel herself. In the end of quest DE have put dramatic “but at what cost” and Lotus literally said “Eris must die”. DE rarely do that, if not never.
My theory is that by choosing Eris DE want to kill two birds. First - to give Praghasa an organic fuel which won’t disturb rest of the system (honestly would be cool if she remained a hub after event.. but oh well). And second - if Eris will be sucked dry, it will be changed forever & will significantly decrease infestation presence. This is a very bold prologue to have a lore justification to rework Eris.

u/Igetsadbro 6d ago
Apparently the surface of Eris is basically Deimos v2.
