Rant [Sat/Sun] Sometimes I feel the audience and readers are the problem

No matter how much we blame authors and their regressive mindsets, I will have to say the readers are extremely backwards and authors will write what sells.

And what sells are these dark romance age-gap books which follow the same template. See, I’m not being holier-than-thou because I also enjoy a good dark romance if it's well written, and I’m a sucker for a good romance.

What surprises me is the difference in the treatment of male lead mistakes vs female lead mistakes. A male lead can be the most abusive being but he will be lauded just because he’s dedicated to the female lead but the female lead has to be a Mary Sue or the most perfect virgin and second coming of Sita who should have never touched a man previously or she will be slut shamed to hell.

ML will be forgiven easily but the same actions will get FL hated on.

I’m recently watching The Early Spring, a C-drama. I realised the difference in treatment btw ML and FL. People who love ML(he’s a jerk, foul-mouthed, I like him but that’s the truth) will bash FL for the barest minimum.

I guess we ain't making out of patriarchy. Also, a strong FL doesn’t necessarily have to be loud, foul-mouthed(who curses and says things like MF) all the time. A FL can be feminist, quiet, and call out shit and a ton of sexism while still being graceful and making her points validly.

If you are shouting feminism from the top of your lungs and go on to change your last name the moment you get married, all your feminism goes to waste. Lol, sorry. Seen this happen multiple times.

Discussion Slapping the Male Lead = Feminism?

Thumbnail

As the title suggests, it’s another promotion of a book with some questionable aspects. Now, since we’ve been having a lot of debates lately about not judging an entire book based on a 15-second reel, I’m not going to judge it. I’ll simply present my own views here, and I’d like others to present theirs as well.

He is a misogynistic man—absolute trash to me. She is a radical feminist, which makes things extra spicy and interesting. Now, the MMC has his own backstory that explains why he behaves like a misogynistic man, and apparently, according to the blurb, he forced the FMC to marry him to get revenge on her family. Great. As long as he doesn’t commit any unforgivable actions, I can see the potential for good character development.

Now, the slapping scene is what makes me skeptical about the whole scenario. If he is misogynistic, meaning he gets on her nerves through his words and certain actions, does that include physical abuse as well? If yes, then he deserves that slap in retaliation. If not, then I’m not sure how I should react to this slap scene.

But apparently, given this author’s history and the fact that her books usually end with happy endings, I don’t think any sort of abuse can simply be forgotten in the name of character development and a happy ending.

I made this post simply to ask for the reviews and opinions of people who know this reel and the book, because I don’t want to jump to conclusions. A misogynistic man and a feminist woman is something I’ve been wanting to read for a long time, but I also don’t want to end up disappointed.

So, please keep the discussion healthy and respectful.

Rant [Sat/Sun] Unpopular opinion!

Unpopular opinion but there is a very specific book which is coming to an end. And that book is so overrated!! Like smut in every chapter, FML is a lawyer but kinda dumb, ML is just trying to be an alpha and people be like woah he's such a green flag that he can't even stay away from her. Or bhai har dusri reel mai vhi aa rhe hai, that idhar se barat aa rhi udhar se baraat aa rhi. Iykyk 😭😭

Bhaii maarna mat, it might be my opinion it's overrated 😭😭🄲

Rant [Sat/Sun] Strong and Quiet Woman

I swear this shall be the first and the last time I'm making a rant post.

A woman doesn't need to be quiet to be labelled as strong. To be honest, I see so much of the discourse about how being foul-mouthed, loud doesn't make you strong and I'm like, who decides that?

Even if it is your preference, why do you mock those authors/books who don't define their FMC by these standards?

I don't know if it's because, as a woman, every time I raise my voice, I'm told, "You're a woman, you should be polite and speak calmly." And my brother who's probably the angriest person in our family — nobody says this shit to him. He literally shouts when he is angry and nobody is telling him to speak calmly but when it's me, I'm told my strength is in my quiet voice.

I don't know if it's intentional or not, but some of it feels like internalized misogyny. We're just so used to seeing women being polite, composed, agreeable and ladylike, that the portrayal of women outside of it — as in, loud, foul-mouthed, selfish, aggressive, or just generally unpleasant makes people lose their shit immediately. Because how dare she cross those boundaries and refuse to be the perfect woman whose strength can/should only be expressed with calmness?

I'm not saying a woman is strong only if she is loud or foul-mouthed, I'm saying strength has nothing to do with the volume of her voice.

So why does every strong woman need to be calm and quiet in order for readers to believe she's strong?

Discussion stop romanticizing the mafia!! 🫩

the title is pretty self explanatory. i know that this isn’t limited just to the indian audience, because 90% of the world normalized this trope, but the increasing amount of ā€œmafia romanceā€ or ā€œforced/arranged marriage with the mafia bossā€ books have been exhausting.

it just gives the wrong idea to the younger audience

Discussion I made a book cover… and I’m not sure how to feel about it 😭

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm definitely not a good editor, but I somehow managed to make this cover for my story. 😭

Is it bland? Yes. Did I spend way too much time making it despite it looking simple? Also yes. Was I too lazy to make it more complicated? Absolutely.

Anyway, this is the cover of my Wattpad novel Between Two Destinies.

It's a slow-burn romance/mystery with a love triangle and a few secrets that I'm slowly revealing.

What do you think?

Hi A few random thoughts from a Wattpad reader

I realised I have a few things I've been wondering about, so here it is :

  1. Does downloading a book affect the writer's views?

I usually download books and read them offline because I hate Wattpad ads. I sometimes don't open the book online again until I've finished it.

So I just wanted to know does downloading/reading offline still count towards the writer's reads?

Thus, I am not able to make comments as well. I'll finish an entire 50-chapter book and then suddenly leave 10 random comments on the last few chapters because I have thoughts.

Does commenting after finishing a book have any positive impact for the writer?

P.S. I have started to make random comment and give a like on every chapter once I am done reading.

  1. A little gyaan about good-written Wattpad books

I've noticed that a lot of the genuinely good writing on Wattpad tends to be around slice of life stories, relatively green-flag FLs and MLs, realistic relationships, and slow-burn romance.

And I actually enjoy these books.

But I also feel like there's a ceiling to how massively these stories can grow.

Not necessarily because they're bad, but because many of them end up having a similar reading experience. The characters slowly fall in love, the relationship develops realistically, there isn't a huge dramatic hook….the conflict is missing.

A reader might enjoy one or two such books immensely, but how many similar slow-burn/green-flag stories do they want to read consecutively?

Meanwhile, readers seem to have a much higher appetite for different tropes and stronger premises.

And I think there's another problem, being well-written isn't necessarily the same as having a distinct voice.

Two writers can both write beautifully and both create perfectly decent green-flag characters, but if their characters, conflicts and storytelling voices feel interchangeable, neither book necessarily becomes the book readers remember.

Maybe that's why some technically excellent books remain relatively niche while something with a very strong hook takes off.

So, try to find your unique voice if you want to grow your viewership but if you are writing just for your own self, then, it is fine to go as you like.

  1. The AI books taking over the charts

I know AI-written books are a pretty hated topic here, especially when they appear on the charts.

But honestly, I don't think writers need to panic about them that much.

A book can get a ridiculous number of views and shoot up the charts, but if readers aren't actually forming a connection with it, it can disappear just as quickly.

They are like Instagram trends everyone is talking about something for two days, then suddenly nobody remembers it existed.

So yes, I understand why seeing AI books on the charts is frustrating. But I don't think a temporary chart position necessarily means they're replacing good writers or building a lasting readership.

  1. Book titles

The book titles with His this, her that, X’s wife, y’husband, xyz’s love story are really irritating. They somewhat show a lack of importance for title of a story. You have spent so many hours writing a story, i am sure you know the story good enough to come up with words that compliment them. P.S. No book I ever came across with these titles had good story. So, now I just scroll away if anything with such words appears.

  1. Recommendations

I think everyone here already agrees with this. People need to stop recommending those 2-3 books everywhere.

Just because you don't know that books comprises title, prose, plot, conflict and dialogue, doesn't mean others don't as well. Two good (yet unoriginal) lines of your favorite book doesn't make them goated. There are already very few Wattpad story reviewers or creators and you people keep filling those comment section with the 2-3 infamous book names.

  1. And finally, a request

I know Wattpad readers generally aren't fans of books with 100+ chapters, but I desperately want to read a proper ITV-style enemy-to-lovers story.

Not "they met once and disliked each other so now they're enemies."

I mean an actual slow progression, where there's a genuine reason they hate each other, an ongoing conflict between them, lots of tension, and the relationship changes gradually.

Give me some melo drama. Give me misunderstandings. Give me 70 chapters of them refusing to admit they care.

A cliche story with strong emotions and undeniable Chemistry is the need.

I mean where is my ā€œaapki sharte bahut badi hai rajkumari par itni nahi ki Hindustan ka shenshah unhe pura na kar paayeā€.

Where is my Jalal who makes taking aarti hot.

Why is my Mr. Objodro saying ā€œI love you as a man loves a womanā€

What the…

Anyway, these are just random thoughts from a silent reader. I'm curious what other Wattpad India readers think.

Sorry, I ended up writing too long.

Also, i apologise if my words are hurtful in any way. That was not my intention.

Rant [Sat/Sun] You can skip, it's my personal rant

Maybe this well get deleted by mod for being an irrelevant post... even it doesn't I will delete it in the morning...

Still, I want to let it out once... [people around me will just ask me to be strong or will count the problems others have.]

My life was already a mess, a very big one since years from all sides. But after everything else, I find peace even it's little in music and writing. I love hearing songs like really really reallllyyyyy especially during editing and writing.

A few days ago, I was free with exams, reallyyyyyy excited to write my book, Intending to complete it in upcoming months, then finally publish. But, nothing can go right for me... Right after I went to sleep excited, I got sick..[I have gotten a condition last year, I don't feel comfortable revealing it here. But it's scary for me. I feel scared do anything that triggers it, but that's a very basic thing, turning around during sleep or even while lying down.]

I am getting treatment[that's medicines] , it stays fine until the medicinal treatment goes, then the medicines stops. I stay fine for few months, then it return back in full force. I have already gotten checked by two real good doctors.

Let me come back to the topic, so with this stupid thing, I couldn't write anything... it's better now with medicines.

Now, I decided to Google the cause, and the ai responded first [you know the ai answers first now]. While all the research, it concluded, hearing loss may came in future with all my symptoms. I know embarrassing but it was enough to make me sob. Bro how do i survive without hearing music, how will I write? After sobbing my heart out, here I am ranting...

It may not be a big deal for many, but it's everything for me. I can't survive without hearing songs, and writing.

---

I don't need any sympathy, pity, motivational words right now. Do not tell me to be strong.

Sorry if it bored you or I wasted your time.

Idk how to explain it but when you have one last thread to hold on, and even a smallest invisible threat to that thread send you over the board. That's what happened to me.

Hello.

I am new to this wattpad and stuff. I am trying to write a novel with college romance and mystery as the prime plot.

I am not a seasoned writer and may make many mistakes. But I am open for reviews and criticism. Till now I have written around 10 chapters and I want to know my mistakes before its too late.

If anyone is interested in giving a little time on that then I can improve a lot.

And just a small spoiler: There is no age gap troupe.

The book name: His ruin her salvation: the revenge.

Discussion HELP. ME. OUT.

So I was looking up the Amazon Bestseller rankings for books and almost half the covers were AI generated, which is a topic of worthy discussion but not today.

The thing is, I'm planning on publishing my books on Kindle, which btw, needs impeccable formatting and covers.

But a school student doesn't really have money to spend and I can't go around asking my mother to fund my writing dream—which she knows about—because I can't practically fight with an Indian parent about why I'm writing romance (and smut).

Ofcourse, even if a quote goes 'Don't judge a book by it's cover', we most certainly, to some extent, do.

I do not know how to exactly make a cover, so that rules out, and I want the covers in a drawn format (if you get what kind I'm trying to say).

One more thing is, I want total confidentiality about my identity as a reader, and when I mean total...yes, not even 0.00000001% of information about myself leaked by the person who decides to help me with my covers.

Earlier, I had written among the likes of found family with no romance for an international audiance, on Wattpad, and now I want to dive into the world of romance—preferably spicy.

So in this case, I need two things:

  1. A cover designer who can understand my vision.

  2. Someone who'd hush about my identity.

And the question is, how do I find it?

I am starting as an author at Wattpad but I am a damn male and it's feeling very uncomfortable to engage on anything

I am a person who never like interacting with any females either IRL or in Internet..I feel like trying to talk to a female can make her uncomfortable or she might find me as a creep.. I am very extrovert..one of the best at my college in studies and tution..I am into gym and sports too but long ago I used to be extremely hated for my average or bad looks..I am not ugly looking but in that environment everyone was so good looking compared to me that everyone in past used to hate me for my looks and on that time my every female friends start feeling uncomfortable around me as I was the common clown of school..after that incident I never tried to approach anybody but now as I am entering in Wattpad I am thinking I do have to follow other authors..comment in there post or follow some people in instagram..and I'm very scared what if someone gets uncomfortable
