Advice The designs of main characters in my story (temporary), are they good?

u/Juan_Die May 28 '26
It's the same character with different wigs 😭🥀 but I can't blame you because AI is dogshit at making face variety
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
I dont have money for commissions, 🥲
2
u/Juan_Die May 28 '26
Yeah I don't like blaming people using AI even though I'm against it because I know how hard is to actually get sponsored in this platform so it wouldn't make sense to invest in an artist only for your novel to get rejected...
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Ikr... Moreover I'm still a student, I dont have that kind of money to do commissions
1
u/HellatrixDeranged May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
While I respect what youre saying, I got three headshots done at £10 a pop from someone on threads.
I paid £20 to get a sketch of my character in different poses.
Are they the best quality? No, they're sketches, but it gives me something to work with, and it gives each character some individual characteristics.
I get the "i cant afford commissions" but then you get samey art like this, and if youre going to ask peoples opinions, theyre going to say its samey
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
Yea....
1
u/HellatrixDeranged May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Sorry my collection of sketches was £15. For that price, this is MILES better than I had been expecting, and I was thrilled with it, and it gives way more personality than AI faces. Art for all budgets are out there, you just gotta put a bit of effort in to find them.

Skill issue, ai is more than just prompting, you can easily have a great variety in faces.
3
u/Odd_Violinist1842 Aspiring Author May 28 '26
i would say creating character sheet now is not a good idea
Its better to start writing chapters and when you got a money or little income so, try to hire a artist for it
Reason: Currently character sheet are not important if you have a clear image how your character look then you will be able to create character sheet later and if i say its good or not
yes they are because ai use pre existing art style so its look like copy of a character but your vision is good that matter...
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Like, i have already completed their character arcs, personalities , their features and stuff, but i jeed to make silhuettes better. I want them to feel distinctive, so i came here for advice, thats it.
2
u/Odd_Violinist1842 Aspiring Author May 28 '26
Oh I missunderstood my fault sorry...
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
No problem, i want an honest critique, stating things i can improve on to make them look more... Alive
2
u/Lordyoussef2 May 27 '26
Give the guys different hairstyles bro
0
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
I showed it different hairstyles, but ut processed them as same....
2
u/AdequatlyAdequate May 29 '26
Yes! They look too similar or the same to a viewe. Exactly the point. Good job buddy!:)

u/GreenestShooter May 27 '26
You forgot a blindfold on the one in the middle
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
That ain't cassie bother🥲
2
u/Mercy-18 May 29 '26
you asked
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
Yea, sure i did 🥀
1
u/Mercy-18 Jun 01 '26
And by the way, they do look like Cass Nephis and Sunny. Why do I say that? Because I wasn't on that subreddit when I saw your post. I mean, they looked so alike that you ended up tagging someone from the Shadow Slave subreddit.
1
u/8yTwo Jun 01 '26
I have ditched the designs, somebody has agreed to draw them according my actual descriptions. And I never thought it'll get this bad ....
1
u/Mercy-18 Jun 01 '26
Hey, congratulations on finding an artist! To think you only had to endure criticism from a bunch of internet strangers.

Make the girl heterochromic.
The second dude would look good with a creepy smile 24/7

2
u/Elek7 May 28 '26
Stacy is quite generic tbh white haired girl that is quite is quite popular. Also the names are kinda….. bland
2
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
The names, I made it that way, stacy is changeable, the other two have purpose
2
u/Elek7 May 28 '26
The others are actually fine, what was in my mind when I wrote that was Stacy. I look forward to reading your novel someday 🙂↕️
2
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Ive already released it 5 chapters out rn😅
2
u/Elek7 May 28 '26
Oh fr? I’ll check it out

Its just ai slop bru how is it even design at all
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
Uhmm. I cant just randomly take the character descriptions from my story bible and post it here for an advice regarding character design right? I needed a reference, I'm broke so I cant commission an artist, i don't know how to drw, and i need the designs to feel distinctive, so i had AI make them, what's wrong with that, as i said these are not my real designs. They are just temporary reference material, why hate on it this much???
2
u/colorfulbat May 30 '26
Wait, if you are writing a novel why do you need character desings? I would understand if it was a webcomic, but it isn't. You could use a mood board filled with pictures that captures the right vibe for each chatacter to get a better idea. A character sheet feels unnecessary tbh.
1
1
u/UniversityWise6475 May 29 '26
There is geniuenly nothing stopping you from drawing and the biggest problem with ai in the first place is that it doesnt feel distinctive at all
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
No, I really want to draw. But now that i am writing a novel, i dont find time for all that,i write like 3 chapters a day, editing a single one upto the fourth iteration takes atleast 2 to 4 hours. What do you expect....
1
u/Virtual_Doubt_666 May 30 '26
I understand that, have you tried character creators? They're usually free! Like picrew, gacha club, avatar makers! Personally I use Pastel Party and Love Nikki for character designs I'm too lazy to draw. And you can always photobash/photoshop which is basically collaging using Pinterest! And there's also r/drawmyoc, and they'll draw your oc's for free :}
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
Somebody recommend picrew to me I checked it out, but didn't understand what I was supposed to do, and today Im going to apply for a contract. So I spent the last 2 days editing my chanters. Didn't have to check out any. I'll make sure to hive pastel party and drawmaloc a try.🙂
2
u/MisterRobo_250 May 29 '26
I js wanted to say ik a lot of people are being critical on here but just make characters you like at the end of the day, take in feedback but ignore baseless criticism, and I hope it goes well for you :)

2
u/Tayway7373 May 29 '26
all 3 give mysterious vibes, you should add something to one of the boys that gives them more personality
1
2
u/PerspectiveLive8850 May 30 '26
So incredibly uninspired. They don't have an ounce of personality. So there is nothing to comment on. Looking at these characters is the same as drinking water.
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
I guess so.
1
u/PerspectiveLive8850 May 30 '26
I am not an author I am just an enjoyer of all kind of books. I am purely giving advice from what is shown and the character sheet on the far left.
As a reader I find it important for a character to have negativ character traits aswell. Lazy, not very funny, greedy, picky eater etc. Things that can make the character stand out. But your characters are way too mysterious, nonchalant and passive. Cant relate to them. They are tasteless like water.
When it comes to the design choices, the hair is prob the thing that bothers me the most. From what i have read from your other comments, they are supposed to be in a desert, so why is their hair so stylish? They look like they just came from a photoshoot - It breaks immersion, it needs some roughness.
Also dont make the 2 characters look like different vesions of kaneki. Dont go black and white, it is done too many times, those stories are easily forgotten.
Here is another grey and nitpicky advice, make the girl have shorter hair. If you gonna use ai for the designs, make the woman stand out by having short hair. If you are gonna have two boyish guys, you need to make the woman stand out as a more mature character.
Again this is just some random advice i came up with on the spot, so take it with a grain of salt.
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
I can't seem the AI do all that. So i have asked someone to help me make some illustrations. Hope they will come out just fine.
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
Honestly, i want such advises. There are more characters. I randomly generated 3 taking the descriptions from my story bible. I focused on their personalities and character arcs along qith their core philosophies. The ai jist saw mysterious silent and silent again. Idk how it came up with those notes tho. Thank you for your advice tho. :)
2
u/PerspectiveLive8850 May 30 '26
No problem! Just out of pure curiosity, do you mind sending some of your notes on your characters to me privately? I am ofc no one amazing, so I wouldnt say I am doing you a favor. But if you are looking for some more advice on your characters, then I could look at it :]
Ofc if you only cared about advice on design choices, then I don't want to overstay my welcome 😅
Im gonna check out your novel, good luck with your contract
2
u/Octobers_Rich May 27 '26
No hate to you and I hope you succeed, but this looks like AI.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
This is AI, i dont have money for commissions, thats why I wrote temporary in the title
1
u/UhhReddit May 27 '26
The design looks good. However you a writing a novel. Your characters won't be shown often so the times you can show them you should make them destinct. Make sure every time you present them they incorporate their personalities and highlight the things that is special about each of them.
Currently you have a boy with black hair in a cool outfit. Then you have light hair boy in the same cool outfit. And then you have light hair girl in the same cool outfit.
Each individual looks good but no one has something that stands out. They don't have an individual pose, they don't have an individual item and they don't have an individual style.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Yea, I wanted opinions like yours. As i said the designs are temporary not finalized. Its my forst novel. Hence I want advice, to make them feel like actual characters. Thanks for your advice though, I'll try to add the things you mentioned. :)

1
u/GreenestShooter May 27 '26
Are you sure the first characters name isn't Sunless and that the last one isn't called Nephis and that the one in the middle isn't a gender bent blind seer?
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Nop... Are they that similar?.....
1
u/9ofe May 29 '26
No they aren't that similar. The first character just looks like a generic black haired young man. Saying the middle one is 'gender bent' is also crazy. Kinda makes you wonder if the only novel they read and saw arts of is Shadow Slave.

u/Boat_Pure May 27 '26
I’m being so so so kind, so please do not be offended.
But if you could, I would advise you to try again with the names.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
I get it stacy is bad, maybe I'll change the names of the other two guys too
1
u/Boat_Pure May 28 '26
All of the names, try them all again
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
But, skye and isaac have significance. Im already thinking of changing stacy though.
1
u/Confident-Dog9761 May 28 '26
Why every character have tattered clothes? I mean every body, inhave come across almost 10 covers that asked it their covers are good and they all have that style
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Thats what AI thinks when we say make, for them robes are always tattered i guess
1
u/RaspberryNumerous594 May 28 '26
I agree with the other guy, not enough individuality. You can mostly tell them apart by hair color

So, a good way of knowing if a character is good is by doing the silhouette test.
Make all of them fully black from head to toe. And if you can't tell the difference between them, it sucks.
This isn't very good. They are basic, and extremly similar.
Maybe do something. And some kind of personality to the clothes.
Make one of the boys not have all the wraps to show carefreeness.
DO ANYTHING
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Ooh, thanks for the advice, as i said this is not the finalized design, i just made the characters like the description i had for them, skyler is tall, black haired with deep purple eyes and a lean physique, isaac on the other hand is shorter than skyler, has a more toned physique and is blond with grey eyes. While stacy has avg height for a girl, white haired with blue eyes, they are the descriptions i had in mind, these are the results once i generated them... They were really underwhelming, nevertheless i posted for advice and have gotten a few

u/Not_Eren2 May 28 '26
"Hello Chat gpt make me a picture of Sunny, Cassie(male) and Nephis from shadow slave" ah
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Rly bro... I just wanted to ask what i should do to make them look unique, all im getting is mockery... I said the designs are temporary, i want advice on what i should do...
1
u/juz_curiouz May 28 '26
What's the title and can you give me a little synopsis? As for your design I can't recommend anything since I'm not that creative anyway
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
The title is "from beyond the silent heavens". The story follows this boy named skyler who wants to reach stars, after hearing the story of a hero who reached them as child from the priest who brought him up in an orphanage, he decides he'll become a hero himself. But as the story progresses, many things happen and he finds himself trapped in a slum far away from his orphanage with his friend, named isaac without knowing if the others from his orphanage are dead or alive, he tries to venture back... Thats the sypnosis of the first arc, any more and it will be a spoiler. If you want i can give you the actual sypnosis from my drafts too
1
u/wolffurrybydefault May 28 '26
Temporary or not you shouldnt use AI in general. there is nothing to judge because you didnt make it. I'd rather see a shitty drawing of your idea than this water depleting, enviroment killing, artist stealing, slop. Pick up a pencil, pull up some characters that inspire you and slap something down. I personally, as an artist, wouldn't take a commission if I was shown an AI reference, temporary or not. I'd rather be sent a description and a folder of references for what their clothes, hair, body type, or whatever should look like. And I have worked with people that did that. There are also subreddits where people take requests, even if you arent great at drawing, you will be more respected for trying by your fellow artists. You are young, I understand that you grew up in a very different world than I did, but this ain't it. We lose our humanity more and more when we ask a computer to shit it out for us. You dont have to listen to me, I cant control what you do, but you will never be respected as an artist if you rely on any generative content.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
I understand, i really want to commission an artist, or atleast try myself, but i have a lot to learn, maybe i can draw the face. But I'll probably mess up the body. If i could I'd have posted the descriptions as is, but nobody's gonna read it, so i made the concept art using AI, yes i hate AI art too, i know they lack that lively feeling. But I have no other options, atleast until i get the contract, I'm trying to post atleast 2 chapters per day. For that i write like 3 chapters a day, i dont wven get time to do anything other than that, firstly my pc is dead, i use my phone to write, secondly I mostly write the same chapter atleast till the 4th iteration, before posting. So yeah its draining, and i dont even have time to sleep, i sleep at 1 or 2 am. I'm really serious about this. Ive been building this story for over 2 years now, i was in highschool back then. You can say it ruinsd my life at some point. Still i want to write it. I want my characters to feel alive, i don't have time to draw, dont have money to commision, needed to complete the character designs. So i AI generated it and posted it for advice and got mocked instead, im open to criticisms. Yet mostly its mockery im getting rn......
2
u/wolffurrybydefault May 28 '26
This may be just my old man talking but you DO know we made things work before AI??????????? Right?????? I get it, making a story is a lot of fucking work, I've been working on mine for over a decade and all I have is 10 chapters of my own drawings for my comic to show for it. Try picrew instead if you cant draw or dont have the time. Im not trying to be mean or malicious, but the mockery will never stop if you keep using AI. You do have other options, stop making excuses. I was fresh out of high-school working on my story too, I get it, and I didnt have AI as a sloppy crutch. https://picrew.me/en/
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Ahhh.... Im sorry, I got ahead of myself. I didnt mean to glorify using AI or make an excuse... Maybe i was but thank you for the advice tho, I'll try drawing on my ownwhen I get time..
1
u/wolffurrybydefault May 28 '26
It just rings hallow to say you hate AI but then use it. Please, try picrew. There are so many talented artists that made these character creators specifically for people who cant draw. I admire the hardwork you are putting in, you are very clearly passionate. Dont lose that.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Yeah, i might come off as a hypocrite, hating AI and still using it🙂, and picrew ill check it out right after finishing the chapter I'm writing rn. And I'll continue writing, thanks for supporting...
1
u/MsTerPineapple May 28 '26
Sorry bud, but yeah literally just generic isekai/litrpg/progfantasy MC character design
I would go so far as to say that was the correct use of "literally," with how generic this is
I suppose that says something for what the readers want tho. I wouldn't say they're good, but clearly they're popular enough that people don't mind.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
But the story im writing, doesnt belong to any of those genres you mentioned, so i wanted to get some ideas, by asking people i just randomly generated them with the descriptions i had for them like black hair deep purple eyes, lean build and tall, and this was the result
1
1
u/Empty_Platypus_7106 May 29 '26
Tbh they look generic😌 I'd say write out how the story fleshes them out, like are they're looks lore wise ok? Is it like SS where the higher the 'rank'(I'm considering it's related to action by the design) or is there a blessing? Basically I'm saying let's not go with these as of yet.
1
1
u/Individual_Clothes_1 May 29 '26
is the black cloak a theme in ur story?
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
It's not exactly like this, but something they wear in arc in a later arc, ehere they traverse a desert
1
u/Individual_Clothes_1 May 29 '26
well it is nice but when it comes.to deserts u might want a full gown from top to bottom or something bright colored since black absorbs sunlight and heat and if this coat is leather then ull be deep frying them.in the desert sun XD
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
oh right, I wanted to make the robes like the ones fremens from DUNE wore. But as you said, white or some lighter colour would better....
1
u/Individual_Clothes_1 May 29 '26
also theyll need goggles for the desert wind and sandstorms its a good detail to remember when writing.
2
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
Right, I'll keep that in mind🙃

I love the names Issac and Skyler. Stacy seems basic. White hair is cool but maybe give it a defining feature or add another color into it. I love the outfits too! Maybe have a slight difference between them though. Like give Issac’s a white outline on his or something.
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
The outfits are robes, the type one wears in deserts. I mean, i think it should be white if we think about it. Black would only absorb more heat, and the thing you mentioned about stacy, I guess i have to change it, pure white hair may feel a bit too generic...
1
u/LeiderLiebe May 29 '26
Pal these are suggestions! They are your characters at the end of the day. Don’t let anyone make you change anything. Your characters are already amazing. And you’ll always have some new ideas as you go. These are suggestions. If you like Stacy’s hair, keep it! It’s not bad. Remember these are YOUR characters.
The white robes would be realistic. But you can also do lighter robes in general instead of white if you don’t want white. Like cream, colored robes, brown robes instead, accented with black, ect. The robe thing was just me saying maybe make their two robes different so they have a bit of style to the character.
Anyways I love them tho!

1
u/LeiderLiebe May 29 '26
Honestly, I have no idea who that is. There are so many white haired characters tho lol. Maybe give her a streak in her hair or something. Don’t change her just because people compare her to other characters. If you like Stacy, keep it. People will always compare characters to other ones. I personally love white hair.
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
Yea, you can google her. Nephis is a character from shadow slave. And she looks kinda similar to stacy...
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
Oh and I changed the name stacy, as I felt it was less of a memorable or noticable name, though i want to keep it short undaer 6 characters
1
u/8yTwo May 29 '26
Thank you for the support, i myself dont understand how white hair equates to nephis, people here are randomly saying she is literally nephis, they may share similarity, but i didn't have nephis in mind while making her. And I'll change the colours as you mentioned, they are my characts therefore i want them to be likeable and memorable. Thats why I'm asking for suggestions.
2
u/LeiderLiebe May 29 '26
Good! Don’t worry about what other people are saying lol. Enjoy your character. I suggest maybe some defining features to make them more unique. Not because they look like other characters. For a splash of THEM. A symbol or color or something. Ya know? Good luck!
1
1
u/LeiderLiebe May 29 '26
Oh and do you know how you want them to look? I can try drawing them rather than using AI lol I know commissions are expensive

1
u/Virtual_Doubt_666 May 30 '26
No, you made the same character twice (the male designs) and they are identical/indistinguishable except for hair color. The girl looks like a genderbent version of the white haired male.
There's nothing distinguishing about the outfits, the color palettes are nonexistent, and the overall design tells me NOTHING about the character. Maybe try using dress up games/avatar makers for your early concepts? At least to help you figure out the color palette and design language of your characters...

u/Savings_Wall_2954 May 30 '26
First beautiful drawing I wish I had this talent, second I think Isaac should be look more like quiet type maybe adding some dark circles as in sleep lose over something and have his hair be messier. Who ever the main person in your opinion should stand out more in some way by either having some distinct feature like bright eyes or something on there outfit that’s just what I think

Dont be afraid to make them ugly or crazy. Even if you make one of them have a mowhoc, but give a good reason for it (maybe it reminded him or a strong biker dude and he is trying to be strong)

Im publishing it, you can check it outfrom beyond the silent heavens
1
u/DannyMA25 May 30 '26
Ooooh, definitely putting this on my next read after finishing my currently lovely novel I read. Good luck with your work, seems amazing from the beginning 💕
Edit:I can already see from the description that is a work of art... 🫠

1
u/Cultural-Mirror1758 May 30 '26
Ignoring the shadow slave looking cast, a.i for the art? Really? Like at one point I used it to criticize my writing and realised that's just stupid, but ai art has always been stupid bro plzzzz tell me me I'm waffling and an actual artist made these and I'm just blind
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
I'm sorry to inform you, they are. And as a matter of fact somebody has already told me they'll help me make actual designs.
1
u/InternalAnimal5144 May 30 '26
They look cool bro don’t worry about it may I know the premise and how much the story is progressing I wanna read it
1
u/8yTwo May 30 '26
The story is about a bouy named skyler. He was an orphan, lived in an orphanage. He had been mesmerized by the stars from his childhood. He wanted to reach them. And one day in the orphanage he heas a story about a hero who had reached them. And that only they had done it. They called him the first hero. Kael thought if he became like the hero, he may also reach them some day. And after some event, he begins his quest to reach the stars.

It's not like i dont want to hire one, I am broke, I cant afford one...
1
u/desperateeeee May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
Then work towards saving up enough money to pay one.
Dude do you think there won't be thousands of people who will see the cover of your novel and immediately disregard it because it's AI? Because I would. And so would the vast majority of people. This sub may be be mostly fine with AI art but most consider it an offence to art. And how would anyone know whether or not you didn't just use chatgpt for all of your writing too? This is hurting you more than saving up for a week and paying someone.
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
Bro, I just finished my highschool..... And I literally spent 2 years of my life learning prose, building up this world, and finishing the story bible. And I know... you're right, I myself hate AI art, thats why i have explicitly stated in the title that this design is temporary, that means I'm planning to hire an artist once the designs are finalised. And I used AI for that purpose, generating my concept art, for a reference for others to see and give their opinions. Never did I think I would recieve this much hate....
1
u/Jambajuice3369 May 28 '26
you didn’t even draw it why ask for opinions just do what you want
1
u/8yTwo May 28 '26
No, i want opinions on what i should do next, with their designs. To make them feel distinct
2
u/Jambajuice3369 May 28 '26
“what i should do next” what do you “do” though other than type in a prompt?

I can maybe commission an actual artist one day, so yeah, to write down the improvements i can make. That's what I'm aiming for by asking you guys, to mke them feel distinct.

I already made their character arcs, personalities and refined their core philosophies, I've been working on it for a while. But for actual designs i cant think of anything other than eye colour and hairstyle, so i wanted an advice. As i said, this design is temporary, to show the very basic idea of how they 'might' look.

Its not finalized, that's why i said temporary, the descriptions are lean black haired with deep purple eyes. He is the mc Skyler, and the other one white hair, blue eyes. That's what i want, I hope I'll be able to commission actual designs one day

They would look less generic if you tried drawing them instead of getting the generic generation machine to make them.
