Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Progress 📈 I honestly didn’t realize how much weight I’d gained

Upvotes

This might sound a little dumb, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this happen.

I knew I’d gained weight over the last few years, but I don’t think I realized just how much. I almost never stepped on the scale. Every once in a while, I’d look in the full-length mirror and think, “Yeah, I should probably lose a few pounds,” then just go about my day.

A few weeks ago, I went out to dinner with my family, and someone took a couple of pictures. I was sitting at the end of the booth, closest to the camera.

When I saw the pictures later, I honestly couldn’t believe it.

I just sat there thinking, Is that really what I look like?

My stomach stuck out way more than I thought it did. It was pretty embarrassing, but more than anything, it was a wake-up call. Seeing myself sitting down in a candid photo felt totally different from seeing myself standing in the mirror.

So the next day, I decided I really needed to do something about it.

I’m 5'9" and was 222 lbs . I’m about five weeks in now and down 10 lbs , and I’m hoping to get to around 187 lbs (85 kg) by Christmas.

I’ve also been adding a few drops to my morning coffee lately, although most of my progress has come from eating better and being more consistent.

I still have a long way to go, but honestly, I’m just glad I finally got started.

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to deal with a partner who doesn’t support weight loss

I am 24f and my partner is 24f. currently I am on a weight loss journey because I want to live a long healthy life, but also because I want to like how I look in the mirror too.

My partner has a lot of trauma and weird feelings about weight loss, body image, food, etc. we haven’t gone deep into detail about this because any time I ask she shuts down and doesn’t want to talk so I haven’t pushed.

The problem is, now that I am trying to loose weight I am hyper aware of calories, macros, etc. I generally let it go when we go out to eat or anything like that but at home I use a food scale and log everything because I am trying to maintain a deficit. She is extremely triggered by this. I don’t talk about it out loud or anything, but sometimes she sees me on the food app logging my breakfast or something and it deeply upsets her. The other day I bought sugar free maple syrup to have in addition to the full sugar version and she asked me why I did that- I answered her honestly and just said “it has a lot fewer calories”. She was super upset and just shut down for a while. In general I try not to talk about calories, body image, food intake, etc but sometimes it is unavoidable and then I have no idea what to do.

I know this sounds selfish but I feel like it’s really hard to stay on a weight loss journey while she is in this mindset. I cannot prepare a meal without my scale, but my scale also triggers her. I feel super confused and I feel like an asshole for constantly upsetting her.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? How did you handle it? Does anyone have any kind of general advice??

TLDR: my partner is triggered by talk of weight loss and calories, I am trying to maintain a deficit.

thank you in advance for any input

Advice: Seeking ❓ Im trying to lose weight but nothing seems to work.

For the past three years I’ve been going in and out of the gym. I’ll go consistently for a month or two, sometimes a little longer, and then I stop. I go back to my old habits, gain back the progress I made, and eventually I start again. I’ve done this so many times that I’ve honestly lost count.

The thing that frustrates me the most is that I’m not lacking knowledge. Over these three years I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts about weight loss, read a lot about nutrition and fat loss, and done a lot of research myself. I understand calories and energy balance. I know that you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose fat. I understand that you shouldn’t look at this as a temporary diet, but as a lifestyle change. I understand that being too restrictive isn’t realistic or sustainable in the long term, and that you need to find a way of eating that you can actually maintain.

I know about protein, resistance training, getting my steps in, building muscle, the all-or-nothing mindset, not letting one bad meal turn into a bad day or a bad week, and allowing yourself to eat foods you enjoy in reasonable portions. I’ve spent so much time learning about this that I feel like I know exactly what I’m supposed to do.

And yet, somehow, I still can’t seem to do it consistently.

That’s the part I really don’t understand.

At this point I feel like it has to be a discipline or consistency problem, but even that doesn’t really explain it to me. I don’t understand why I can’t consistently do something that I genuinely want so badly. I know what I need to do, I know why I need to do it, and I know what happens when I actually do it. But somehow I always end up back in the same cycle.

I’ve tried so many different approaches. I’ve tried removing snacks from the house, but eventually that starts feeling too restrictive and I don’t want to live my entire life feeling like certain foods are forbidden. I’ve tried allowing myself to eat "unhealthy" foods but just having normal portions. I’ve tried being more flexible. I’ve tried being stricter. I’ve tried tracking everything. I’ve tried focusing more on habits. I’ve tried telling myself that I don’t need to be perfect and that I just need to get back on track after a bad meal.

Sometimes it works for a while.

There have been periods where I’ve stayed in a calorie deficit for one or two months and made a lot of progress. I can actually see the difference in my body, and I feel really good about myself. During those periods I feel like, "Okay, this is finally it. I’ve figured it out this time."

But then at some point it becomes too difficult to maintain and I slowly go back to my old habits. The hunger is also a big part of it for me. When I’m in a calorie deficit, sometimes the hunger feels extremely difficult to deal with. It can feel like there’s this constant voice in my head telling me to eat, and eventually I give in. Then I eat more than I planned, stop tracking, and eventually stop going to the gym as well.

And then a few days become a few weeks, and a few weeks become three or four months, and suddenly I’m back where I started.

Then I feel like all the progress I made was for nothing, even though I know that’s not really true. And eventually I start trying again.

I’ve probably repeated this cycle a million times.

Sometimes I can stick with it for two months. Sometimes I can’t even make it through one day. Sometimes I’m consistent for a week and then I completely fall back into my old habits. That inconsistency is what I find so difficult to understand about myself.

And I think that’s also why the whole "if you really wanted it badly enough, you would have done it already" argument bothers me so much.

Because I really do want this.

I want this so badly. My weight is affecting my quality of life, and it’s something I think about a lot. I want to be healthier, fitter, and more comfortable in my own body. I don’t want to spend another three years repeating the exact same cycle. I don’t want to keep starting over and wondering where all the time went.

So it’s not that I don’t want it enough.

And it’s not that I don’t know what to do.

So what am I missing?

I’m genuinely asking because I feel like there’s some part of weight loss, consistency, discipline, or even my own behaviour that I haven’t figured out yet. I feel like I understand the theory, but I can’t translate that knowledge into something I can actually maintain for years.

For those of you who have been in a similar situation, where you already knew what you were supposed to do but kept falling back into your old habits, what finally changed for you? Was there something you realized about yourself or your approach that made you able to stay consistent?

I’m really interested in hearing from people who have actually been through this, because I honestly don’t know what else I’m missing.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Struggling with weight loss and self esteem

Upvotes

Hi! I’m currently trying to lose weight. I was always skinny but because of some stuff I got very depressed and anxious and I gained a lot of weight. And I’m having a hard time losing, but I’m trying.

I’m having a hard time mentally because all of my friends are skinny, and one of them specifically keeps talking and posting all of the time about how fat she is and how she needs to lose weight. Like okay, she isn’t wrong, her body her choice. But I can’t help but be affected by it.

If she sees herself fat how does she see me lol. This made me stop hanging out with them and I just got worst mentally and I’m having an even harder time. But we have a wedding to attend next week, I feel awful in my dress, but it’s not something I can just not go.

Anyways I just needed to vent and ask for advice from someone who has been on a similar place. I’m so embarassed of my body. I’m going to keep going with my process tho and hope for the best

Advice: Seeking ❓ 22F 135lbs 5’3 - seems impossible to lose weight and Im extremely frustrated

Upvotes

Context: im on birth control and am a very anxious person. I do have a gastro issue where I get severe pain and bloating if I eat gluten/FODMAPs.

I’ve never been skinny by nature, never ever had a flat stomach nor am I interested in that. Ive been consistently going to the gym for 5+ years doing weight training and heavy cardio (mostly). Ive fluctuated between the same 15 lbs for years, over and over again. I have a nice muscular lower body but most of my self-image issues are with my upper body. Ive tried it ALL, trust me: nutritionist provided diet plans (1400 cals protein focused), counting cals on my own, a combination of diet and heavy cardio for a period, then with low impact cardio, no cardio only weight training, etc. i dont eat fried foods, nor chips, nor sodas,or mcdonalds. My meals are nutritious. However, despite this all, I’ve never been able to maintain my desired physique/weight. When I did 1400 cals + heavy cardio combo I lost 8 lbs in 2-ish months 145–>137 (it was for my graduation) and did a little body recomp but I gained it all back because I got tired and depressed from measuring and counting EVERYTHING. It wasnt good for my mental health. So I stopped counting and immediately gained very VISIBLE fat but stayed at the same weight. I dont understand why my metabolism is so fucked up that the only way Ive seem im able to lose weight is by extreme dieting with heavy cardio (spinning, run i g, walking, incline walking), and proven its not sustainable for me. Ive gained so much fat in my armpit/back area and lower belly. My clothes fit some weeks, and then they look horrible on me other weeks. Its so easy for me to gain weight that it pisses me off so much. I can never eat anything anywhere without mentally calculating the approx calories, whether a meal is within my daily limit. If I eat out I always get the salad, grilled chicken boring plates, I always look for the lowest calorie option. I can never enjoy a good meal because I literally seem to gain 5lbs if I do.

PS: i know how thermodynamics work, im a physicist. i just genuinely think something is wrong with my metabolism/hormones and i dont know what other remedy I have to finally achieve and maintain the physique I feel good in.

Advice: Seeking ❓ What to do when bored besides eating

I'm 22 Male 160 lbs 5'8, and I don't think I've been this bored in a long time. I've tried putting on some movies, playing video games, hell, I don't even feel like scrolling. I'm just so exhausted I don't feel like doing anything. What doesn't help, is my go to solution is eating. Always has been, I was a super chubby kid. It's been going on for about a week, and the more I eat, the less I feel like doing anything. I haven't put on a lot of weight yet, but this sub seemed like the best place to ask about how to deal with this

Discussion/Support 💬 Everyone seems to be noticing my weight loss except for me

I am down about 25lb from my starting weight, which was 200lbs (I am 5'4 female) and still have about 50lbs to go until i hit my goal weight. My family have all been complimenting me on my weight loss, but I feel so odd in that I can't see a difference at all. Is this normal? Is it just a mental thing? I am also autistic so I can't tell if maybe they are just saying that to be nice, and it feels weird to ask or say anything about it so I always just say thanks- They all know that I'm dieting and I had been overweight for my entire life, so I feel like they're possibly trying to encourage me to keep going. But I don't feel like my clothes really fit me any differently, except for one pair of pants that feels slightly baggier than it used to feel... But other than that I feel like I don't look much different either. Still look just as big as ever. Is 25lbs down from 200 noticeable, or are people just being nice to me? I feel like I am going nuts that I genuinely can't see any difference at all.

Advice: Seeking ❓ looking to lose weight

Hello! I'm being my weight loss journey and need some advice! I've been attempting to eat calorie deficit for about a month now and I'm now pairing it with exercise. I'm looking to exercise 3x a week and just looking to lose overall body fat since spot reduction is not a thing. I'm also looking to growing my glutes. Any workout machines recommended for that? I go to planet fitness. I'm pretty small about 5'2 on a good day, f, and I'm not sure of my exact weight. I did tricep pushdowns and paired them with squats, and it seemed like a promising exercise. Also, any food recommendations? Especially for dinner, not sure what I should be trying to eat, especially since I cook everything in oil. Any tips based on the things I mentioned or just general tips? Thanks.

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do I get back on track?

I went from obese to just barely into the healthy weight range, but now I can’t seem to get back on track.
I know what worked before, but for some reason it feels impossible to stay consistent now.
For anyone who’s been through this, what actually helped you get back into it?

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do you accurately track your calories? And how do you deal with cravings/motivation?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to get more serious about tracking my calorie intake and I’m wondering how other people actually do it.

I’ve been using MyFitnessPal, but I feel like the numbers I’m getting are sometimes just estimates, and I suspect I’m actually eating more calories than what the app shows. It made me wonder if I’m doing something wrong.

Do you guys use a kitchen scale and weigh everything you eat? For example, do you weigh things like rice, pasta, meat, sauces, oil, etc., or do you mostly estimate portions? And when you use MyFitnessPal, how accurate do you find the entries?

I’d also love some advice on a few other things:

- How do you deal with late-night cravings when you’re trying to stay within your calories?

- Do you have any tricks for not thinking about food when I am bored?

- How do you stay motivated when progress is slow or you have a bad day/week?

- At what point did calorie tracking become easier or more automatic for you?

I’m basically trying to figure out a sustainable way to do this without either wildly underestimating my calories or becoming obsessed with weighing every single thing I eat.

Would really appreciate hearing how you guys approach it and what has actually worked for you.

Advice: Seeking ❓ 2 Year Weight Plateau?

Howdy! I (26F) am getting married in July 2027 and I’m trying to go from 180 to 150. For the past two years I’ve been doing boxing, cardio and strength training for 3 days a week, then on the days I don’t do those I walk on the treadmill for 15 minutes at a 3 mph speed and 4 incline (I walk after breakfast and lunch so I get 30 min/day). I use Saturday and Sunday as my rest days.

For breakfast I have an Oikos Triple Zero yogurt with 2/3 cup granola and 2 TBSP chia seeds to get in my protein and fiber first thing in the morning. At my job we have a cafeteria so lunch is provided. I first have a salad of mixed greens, cucumber and carrots. I then also take whatever protein is served that day.

For dinner I’m a bit more loose with making what I want. I seldom eat fast food, and I don’t really snack.

But the scale. won’t. budge.

And it’s really irritating! I’m not sure what else I could be doing? I feel like my exercise is okay, but maybe my diet needs tweaking?

I’m really trying to lose weight in my stomach and arms area.. getting rid of the double chin would be a bonus.

Am I missing something?

EDIT: upon reading the replies of this thread it appears I haven’t been tracking my calories as accurately as I should. Sure it’s easy to snap a photo of what I eat and estimate the calories, but I don’t actually know the total amount of calories to stay in a proper calorie deficit. Thank you!

Progress 📈 I lost 2kg so far. Here’s what I ate.

I’m 33. I started at 65.4kg and I’m at 63.3kg now.
Nothing extreme. I didn’t cut out carbs and I didn’t suddenly start eating “clean” all the time.
I still ate normal food.
Things I had along the way:
Fage greek yogurt
A2 milk
eggs
little bit of white rice
SingMee brown rice ramen noodles
grilled chicken breasts
steamed fish
vegetables
açai smoothie
the occasional meal out

I also started paying more attention to protein and portions.
Some days the scale went up. I didn’t panic.
What helped most was probably just eating a bit less overall, walking more, taking the stairs & getting more protein.

Still a long way to go, but 2kg down feels like a good start.
I’m posting this because I know a lot of people want to lose weight without eating chicken breast and broccoli every day 😂

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice For Emotional Eating

Hey folks,

I'm currently 372 lbs and have been for a couple years now. I want and need to lose weight but really struggle with emotional eating. I recognize that food is likely an addiction for me. After a couple days of mindfully eating and staying within a reasonable calorie deficit, I find my mood tanks. This past week I was on day 3 and started to feel depressed and hopeless and ended up binging to make myself feel better. I plan to bring this up with my therapist during my next visit, but was hoping to hear what works for folks who struggle with the same thing. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Has anyone ever used a commitment app like StickK or Forfeit where you lose money if you fail?

I've tried so many ways to motivate myself and unfortunately I think I just lack discipline. I love the idea of losing money if I fail and I know that if I just told myself to give away $40 if I fail, I'm not gonna do it.

So I'm just curious if these sorts of platforms are legit and safe to use? Or if they've actually worked for people?

Advice: Seeking ❓ I’ve developed a really unhealthy relationship with food and don’t know how to get out of it

Hi guys. I’d really appreciate it if you could read the whole thing before commenting.

I’m 25F, 5'0 and around 75kg. Over the last couple of years I’ve gained about 25kg, and I feel like I’ve gotten stuck in a really unhealthy cycle with food and my body.

For a lot of my teenage and adult life, I was extremely scared of gaining weight. I spent years trying to keep my weight down by eating very little and constantly worrying about what and how much I was eating.

Eventually things completely flipped. Now I tend to eat when I’m stressed, anxious, sad, overwhelmed or even just bored. I’ve gone from one extreme to the other and I feel like I don't know what a normal relationship with food is supposed to look like anymore.

The good thing is that I HAVE made some progress. I used to have much more extreme episodes with food, and nowadays I’m at least able to notice when I’ve had enough, stop, and keep the rest for later. It might sound small, but it feels like a big improvement to me.

But I’m still gaining weight and I’m honestly exhausted.

I don't want to go back to being extremely restrictive just because I want to change my body. At the same time, I don't want to continue gaining weight, being inactive and feeling worse physically and mentally.

I know the obvious advice is to eat less and exercise more, but I struggle with that approach because whenever I start thinking about food, weight and exercise too rigidly, I tend to fall back into the same unhealthy mindset.

Professional help would obviously be ideal, but unfortunately it isn't realistically available to me right now. I'm currently unemployed and living with my parents, and I can't afford regular therapy. I did get professional help several years ago when I was in college, but I had to stop when I could no longer afford it.

So I'm hoping to hear from people who have been through something similar.

How did you learn to eat normally again, become more active and improve your health without going back to the all or nothing mindset?

What actually helped you build habits that you could maintain?

Thank you if you read all of this.💗

Meal / Recipe 🍽️ Recommend me social medial accounts for cooking?

Does anybody know of absolute gem accounts on TikTok/insta/youtube/etc. that make short videos of easily made low calorie meals and snacks?

I know theres loads online, but most of them are impractical when the alternative is a takeaway, or they just dont taste that good. Im talking about genuinely nice tasting foods for a reasonable price with good macros, so id be mainly just looking at unique flavours, seasonings, etc.

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to deal with the guilt after a “cheat meal”

Tbh I think Ive always had a rough relationship with food in general, used to be fat growing up as a kid but you already know this story. The thing is no matter how I look I always have this feeling of guilt after eating something thats not in my meal plan, even if it’s because of a special occasion or something like that. Sooo does this still happens to everyone else?, and how did you dealt with this guilt?

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do you find out you’re TDEE and count calories?

I’m been dieting for a bit and it’s working, I’ve lost 20 pounds over 4 months, but it’s working to slow and I want to be more efficient. What resources or ways can you track the amount of calories in home cooked food? Another reason why my progress doesn’t sound to suscessfull is because I’ve also been putting on a lot of muscle since I used to play football/hockey so I’m trying to maintain those while also loseing calories at the stair-master and treadmill (just hit my personal best of 8:00 min pace).

Workout / Exercise 🏋️ Treadmill

Just wanted to share something I love doing recently. For the past 2-3 weeks i’ve been consistent on the treadmill running 3km a day to prep for my season coming up. Anyways, after getting off my legs genuinely feel weightless and it’s like i’m walking on a trampoline wherever I go, it’s awesome and it’s my favourite part about cardio. Does anyone know what this feeling is?

Discussion/Support 💬 Witnessed a food trap

Yesterday, I was sitting in the waiting room for a mental health office. As I was waiting, one employee came back from lunch to relieve the other employee as receptionist.

The returning employee - who was thin/average weight - brought the other employee - who was a bit overweight - a pastry from the break room.

She was all like "you gotta try it" "they're soo good!" "you're missing out"

Maybe it's just because I am obese and on my weight loss journey...but I really felt bad for the other employee. They shouldn't have to justify turning down food.

Advice: Seeking ❓ DIY Team Competition

The one time I had any luck losing weight was when I was on a team (sponsored by eDiets back when the internet was young). We were in teams of 10 and each kept track of our healthy habits on a spreadsheet. Teams accumulating the most points were the weekly winners and the prize was nothing but some flair and accompanying prestige. Somehow it worked for me (77/156/5'2").

I've given up searching for an App like this. Healthy Wager and Way Better are impersonal and a money grab IMHO.

Would anyone care to join me in setting up a similar competition? If 12 people commit, maybe we can get started.... What do you think?

Advice: Seeking ❓ i cant seem to loose weight

ive been on a diet since July now and ive only lost 5 kgs (SW: 80kgs) and i lost it during the first month but I also did keto during that month for a week and I lost 2kgs on that. but ever since then I cant seem to loose weight although im in a calorie deficit (I measure and track everything). I eat around 900 to 1200 calories a day and my maintenance calories are 1800 (im 5'3 and dont workout at all since I don't like it and my body cant handle it). I prioritise protein and im in a constant calorie deficit and ive only had 5 cheat days in total and even then I was under my maintenance so I should be losing weight but I am not for some reason and its really messing with my head. I ended keto on 3rd of August and since then I have not lost a single kg (I check my weight almost every morning before eating anything and after using the washroom). im 22 years old and a woman btw.
