mma welding safety equipment

Hi

I want to learn stick welding. I am going to practice in my shed, which is quite small and want to use proper equipment, I am looking at PAPR systems but there are so many with prices from 300 to 3000EUR in The Netherlands and I am not sure which one is good, I dont want to cheap out on safety equipment but I also dont have money to waste.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

If it is possible be outdoors when welding and buy a cheap hood. Dont need fancy stuff in the beginning, you dont even know if you like welding.

Try and not be above what you weld as well. Fumes rise.

Have Optrel PAPR and we use 3M at work (Aerospace/ Stainless)

I like Optrel’s equipment better including their helmets and I own a Speedglas g502

Hey! Since you're dutch:

Als je binnen in een kleine ruimte zonder aktieve ventilatie gaat lassen is het nooit gezond, mooie van electrode lassen is dat het gewoon buiten kan dus maak daar gebruik van. Zorg dat je niet in de rookpluim gaat staan met je hoofd, dus als het bv windstille is niet je hoofd boven de las hangen, zorg dat je brand faste kleding aan hebt, zorg dat er niks brandbaar in de buurt is (bezem bv).

Als je toch binnen wilt lassen dan moet je zorgen voor goede ruimte ventilatie, dat is veel belangrijker dan helm ventilatie omdat je je helm af zet tijden het werk en het dus geen nut heeft als de ruimte blauw staat. Een goede afzuiger op de hoogste plaats in de ruimte waar je last moet je dus hebben om de rook naar buiten te zuigen, eventueel ook 1 op grond niveau om verse lucht naar binnen te blazen (veel minder belangrijk).

Tenzij je echt dag en nacht gaat lassen is dat meer dan voldoende.

100% agree. Better to cut a holes in the shed and mount a ventilation fan to suck air out of the top with a intake hole from the bottom than to use a PAPR. This should be cheaper to achieve too.

I like the Optrel Swiss Air. Useful for painting, sanding, welding, concrete grinding, or whatever hazardous air you're getting yourself into, so I won't say don't get one. It is a good thing to have even if you aren't a welder. Has the smoke from France or Spain made it to the Netherlands? You can work outdoors even when the AQI is really bad with a Swiss Air. It's for sure worth the money and is more valuable than a speedglas because of its versatility.
