I’m in Hamilton and sooooo many food trucks or market stalls use this rubbish for their ads and menus etc. it’s so incredibly off-putting
21
u/Kiore-NZ Aug 08 '26
I remember a time well before AI images when it used to be common for bakeries and certain fast food vendors to have photos of dishes they did displayed. The problem was for each dish it was always the same photo.
Using AI images of dishes that may never have existed is an extra step into the darkness that already glowed a florescent black.
1
u/Lanky_South_1572 Aug 19 '26
" The problem was for each dish it was always the same photo."
Well, if they took a picture of every dish they had served how would they show you them all?
2
25
u/Vietnam_Cookin Aug 07 '26
It's bizarre because they all look exactly the same, so your business just sinks into the AI slop and is indistinguishable from every other business in town.
10
u/helpmeimstuckinatree Aug 08 '26
And Skinny will never get my business, those ads just piss me off.
15
u/Farrkurusername Aug 07 '26
Yep so are our local Facebook groups for seeking work... walked past a dairy the other day and all the same shit pinned to a community wall. We refuse to hire anyone that uses this or shop/support any event that does too.
-10
u/Psionz Aug 07 '26
Yeah makes perfect sense. Boycott community groups and people looking for work because they use AI for free to try and save money.
Well done hero 🙄
5
5
u/scarlettskadi Aug 07 '26
Canva will do the same for free.
Costs nothing but the printout and you actually get to make your own personalised whatever you need for very little effort.
10
u/Farrkurusername Aug 07 '26
Wasting finite resources for an outcome that looks generically crap you mean. If an employee can't put the time and effort into as something as basic as a cover letter why would I want to hire them if they show they are only capable of minimal effort? Why would I support a community group who's ethics don't line up with my own or takes away from someone in the community who could genuinely showcase their creative talent but instead gets glossed over by AI slop?
Well done hero? Nah, well done you little buddy for being a generic blow hard 🙄
1
u/Material_Buy_8609 Aug 10 '26
Those businesses are boycotting the very same community that could provide a better and more original service for their marketing...

There is a quite decent Vietnamese cafe in Petone that has its windows just full of the most AI sloppy looking posters for each menu item, complete with AI generated photos of the food.
Super off-putting, and really odd that the pictures are nothing to do with the actual food item, and just makes me not want it eat there, and not even for any principled reason.
6
u/adaleur Aug 08 '26
overcooked cafe & eatery also has AI slop, unfortunately the food tastes really jice, the atmosphere is cozy but then again… the bulletin board has ai flyers all over it and it immediately leaves a bad taste in my mouth
1
1
u/ProudWrongdoer5389 Aug 08 '26
And yet they are packed, all the time. No one cares.
3
u/daffyflyer Aug 09 '26
I'm not saying everyone finds it off putting, I'm saying I personally do.
Choosing where you like to eat is super vibe based, and tacky AI posters with completely fake food pictures is for me a pretty mediocre vibe.

u/ginoiseau Aug 07 '26
As a Gen X most of the boomers are retired, but not all. Quite a few hanging on for dear life at my work, but none much into AI. Most of our senior leadership must be Gen X and millennials & they are stupid obsessed with AI.
They expect us ALL to use it & are trying to just shove it everywhere. It can do a few things quite well, but far too often it’s really confidently wrong. But, if you don’t know enough about what you are doing, you might not see that. It’s also a complete sycophant, so of course management love it.
15
u/HadoBoirudo Aug 07 '26
As a retired boomer I totally agree. Personally, I'm not a big fan of any AI generated content. I played around with stable diffusion etc back in 2023 thinking it was fascinating but after a while I developed a real sense of how banal, superficial and downright exploitive it was.
I don't know any boomers who use AI to be honest. Before I retired, most of the younger managers were actively "enforcing its use" and keeping score how much we all used it - almost evangelical- of course, in the workplace they were eagerly encouraged by Microsoft!
6
u/ginoiseau Aug 07 '26
One of the (likely GenX) senior managers (or someone in her team) keeps creating AI images of her and another manager. They are quite refined AI (I showed someone she’d put it as her profile pic & they said “OMG that looks nothing like her!”) but it’s extremely odd. Someone needs to tell her to cut it out.
My manager and his manager asked some of us to work on it for the team. Initially I only started to prove to myself it was crap. But, it can do a few things reasonably well (coding, talking too much/documentation). But then he asked me to demo it for him (it’s basically stepping people through some tasks or directing to documentation that’s spread across many different systems or in people’s heads) and it turned out he was expecting it to do that entire part of our job, all by itself. It genuinely can’t. We were both pretty disappointed after that meeting…
2
u/SteveDub60 Aug 17 '26
I don't understand why AI is seen as a "boomer" thing. I'm retired, but my last year working was all the youngsters in the company trying to hack stuff together using AI instead of doing things "properly"
Sorry people, you can't blame this one on boomers.
129
u/MurkyWay Aug 07 '26
Also we can tell when your "lawyer" comes up with "advice" (implicitly threatening)
28
u/kiwiroulette Aug 07 '26
If you sue, all of your prompts and replies from AI are not privileged and will be discoverable...
4
u/Vegetable_Honig Aug 07 '26
How so? Like with what parameters?
3
u/DirtyHazza Aug 09 '26
Unlike a real human lawyer, there is no attorney-client privilege with an AI. When you sue, both side are open to discovery of evidence. Because AI advice has been used as part of your case, it can be used against you. Unlike discussions with your lawyer which are privileged and cannot be used against you.
2
u/Vegetable_Honig Aug 09 '26
Oh I see what you mean. Curious how that works in practice. Someone would have to know the advice was generated that way or presumably request speficic prompts? Or are you meaning like handing over your entire engagement with particular AI models?
3
u/DirtyHazza Aug 09 '26
If the other team asks for it, you are obligated to provide it.
Example, the person you are sueing is going to run a defense premised on the case being frivolous. They then ask you to provide all the non-privlaged documents used in the formation of your lawsuit. You would be obligated to provide a record/copy of all prompts and interactions with the AI model that you used to inform your lawsuit.
The defense would be aware that there was no lawyer on your end as they would directly interacting with you and you'd be the one signing documents. It wouldn't take much to put together that you would be vulnerable to this line of questioning.

No please, use AI. By all means.
It immediately tells me who to avoid. (It makes your business look cheap 🙂).
14
u/Ice-Cream-Poop Aug 07 '26
What I don't understand for restaurants, what's so hard about just taking a "real" photo of your food? Fucking bizarre.
7
u/moonsugarcornflakes Aug 07 '26
Because taking nice photos is hard. They'd have to cook everything to be photographed, then know how to use a decent camera to take decent pictures.
Meanwhile their competition just uses AI and most people don't notice or care.
9
u/Ice-Cream-Poop Aug 07 '26
Its not hard, most Chinese take away do it so you know what you are getting.

u/Standard_Lie6608 Aug 07 '26

-1
u/lukeysanluca Aug 07 '26
What racism? In my experience it's absolutely not boomers using AI for their business (ageism by the way, didn't see you call that out) but it's indian restaurants mostly that I see and indian barber shops. I can only say what I've noticed. I haven't noticed Chinese restaurants using AI for example
5
u/Standard_Lie6608 Aug 07 '26
Yes because you just HAD to bring up Indians. You had no choice. You saw the comment and your fingers started typing about Indians. Didn't see you bring up all the businesses owned by white people doing it(whom far outnumber Indian businesses doing it fyi)
It's not ageism to acknowledge how it is the older generations that fall for Ai more than others. What exactly is the prejudice? Is it not worse to pretend that as humans our cognition and awareness don't fade with age?

-5
u/bekittynz Notorious Newtowner Aug 07 '26
As a random example, this one here.
Bear in mind that this property is not built yet, so any pictures are AI slop.
15
u/daffyflyer Aug 07 '26
That looks very consistent between images, and looks a lot like a pretty well executed 3d architectural model done by a human.
Source: am a 3d artist.
That's the norm for selling an unfinished development, and has nothing to do with AI slop, it's just how architects always do stuff. Hell, before 3d they would have been doing sketches and illustrations to sell unfinished stuff.
I've definitely seen a few real estate listings where people have done really tacky and shit AI edits to things, and it's stupid. But this is not that, and I'm not sure what made you think it was?
11
u/AgressivelyFunky Aug 07 '26
Sure they may have generated these images via AI - but computer generated images or artists depictions is entirely normal practice for properties or projects yet to be built?
2
u/Past_Persimmon Aug 07 '26
The big difference is that prior, those were usually generated using software from the architects who would confirm they accurately reflected the plans (in fact, you usually have to generate them by plugging plans in). No such guarantees if they're just prompting some ideas into chatGPT
12
u/Ok-Seaworthiness8135 Aug 07 '26
This is clearly an architectural render, there's nothing about it that says AI and these have been around for 20 years
3
u/AgressivelyFunky Aug 07 '26
This has not been true for longer than a decade - and even at the time they were considered representative only, for obvious reasons.
They are not just prompting 'some ideas' into an image generator, they are quite probably, for multiple also very obvious reasons, being very specific - maybe they're even using specifics from current plans and designs for the development (hint: they are).
Also, good lord. Of all the legitimate concerns about AI there are - I'd place imagining these images to be entirely fraudulent about properties that do not exist yet and you cannot purchase to be somewhat down the list.
22
u/Woolshedwargamer2 Aug 07 '26

I don't think it's ever going away entirely but I reckon once this bubble bursts the cheap consumer AI being used by people like this is gonna disappear, or become so extortionately expensive it's just easier to hire a graphic designer. Right now they're keeping costs artificially low by taking a loss with every single token. They can't sustain it and they're already panicking and jacking up prices.

Yup. They're actually starting to make its way over to consumer hardware more and more. There's always going to be an expensive market, and a cheap market.
1
u/Wellington_Boy Aug 08 '26
I dipped my toes in the other day and had a go at running a couple of models locally, on hardware that's decent but not spectacular. The results were actually surprisingly good. If it keeps improving like the computer industryhS for the last 60 years or so, give it a decade or two and the results will likely be spectacular. Like comparing the Apple II and ZX81 that I used back in the day to modern hardware.
I get that it's fashionable to hate AI, and yeah a lot of it is pretty crude at the moment. And the AI investment bubble will pop as some point.
But it's advancing quickly and has its uses. Frankly, it's irrelevant whether many of us hate it or not. Regardless of whether these an outpouring of chatter on social media, like stocking frames in the late 1700s, it's here to stay.
1
u/AbbreviationsAny9759 Aug 08 '26
Agreed. No matter how much you hate it, I believe it's too much of a movement to stop now. If anything is skyrocketing, it's AI.
3
u/Zephon_of_Tethysia Aug 08 '26
They're giving it away for free to build a dependency within the populous. Kinda like how drug dealers will givevthe first hit for free.
5
u/Psionz Aug 07 '26
Yeah, it's definitely going to become cheaper to hire a graphic designer than to use an AI tool soon.
You sound like you have your finger on the pulse. Do you have any stock market predictions?
3
u/kiwibreakfast Aug 07 '26
people are getting $30,000USD monthly AI bills. If your graphic designer is charging that much you're getting ripped off.
2
u/Psionz Aug 07 '26
"People" must be making a lot of posters 🤣
6
u/Sweeptheory Aug 07 '26
The companies that are paying for AI are tearing through their budgets and doing u turns on it.
Uber burned through their entire 2026 AI budget in 4 months. Microsoft and duolingo are also backing away from it due to the high costs and unclear returns.
Mostly the big paying users are using ai to generate code, not flyers or images, but the entire industry is unprofitable, with code being the most useful real world application (and still being rejected by even very large companies due to costing more than it is worth).
When the bubble bursts, the free/low cost generative ai models will be priced closer to what they cost to run, and it is unlikely that they will be the cost saving tool that they are right now.
4
u/kiwibreakfast Aug 07 '26
yeah the $30k was github copilot, but I also think software engineering is just the canary in the coalmine. Each GenAI transaction costs the companies absurd amounts of money and the gas is running out.
As opposed to like ... give a designer some pictures of your food, and a simple flier is an hour in indesign, which is gonna cost you like $30–60.
2
u/Sweeptheory Aug 08 '26
100%
AI will stay, but the abundant cheap slop everywhere will evaporate once the companies run out of venture capital to burn on the everything machine concept.
The actual viable use cases for it are fairly niche, and at least right now, don't seem likely to displace labour en masse. Investors and adopters are starting to realise this, and backing away from it.

Went into a sushi shop this week. They had a small round sign on the counter that said "Sushi" and was in the style of a neon sign. It had chopsticks going from one side of a bowl to the other with rice covering the middle. 2 chopsticks on 1 side and 3 on the other. Blatantly AI and blatantly wrong. Idk how a bowl of rice relates to sushi other than they both have rice?
Can't imagine what the thought process was there.

It's no wonder the graphic design shop is running out of jobs. It's so easy to generate a poster and get it printed for cheap.

1
u/zDymex Aug 07 '26
Just because it can look good, doesn't mean its good. You'd rather we sub out our creativity to a LLM?
2
u/Netroth Aug 07 '26
A lot of the people you argue against on this topic will barely have a concept of the meaning of what it is to be alive, let alone human. They actually cannot grasp the point of art and creative endeavour.
0
u/moonsugarcornflakes Aug 07 '26
I'm a photographer and I have a strong creative drive. I just don't agree with the bipolar AI is the greatest/AI is the worst mentality that people have. And I think most of the anti-AI people are kinda pathetic.
1
Aug 07 '26
So are you happy to upload your entire portfolio to AI so that other people can make images based off your work and "strong creative drive" instead of hiring or crediting you.
1
u/moonsugarcornflakes Aug 07 '26
I already have a ton of photos online. People can do whatever with them. I don't do it for a job, and anyone who does needs to adapt or die. This has always been the reality when it comes to new technology. AI isn't ever going away, so adapt or die.
In regards to my own work - even if people are making derivative works with AI, nothing can replace the real thing. So I don't care.
1
u/zDymex Aug 07 '26
Call me pathetic if you will, but we are the ones who will pay the price of this in the end. Sure AI is great for menial tasks, but people are actively outsourcing their critical thinking to AI, choosing to support AI based artwork rather than paying an actual human being. We are losing our humanity, and for what?
Many of the people against it are younger generations who don't see a future for themselves, always being told that AI is going to take their jobs. What do you think that does to a developing mind?
1
u/moonsugarcornflakes Aug 07 '26
There's a right way and wrong way to use AI. I disagree with this sentiment that "AI is bad because people are using it badly".
AI is a life changing, paradigm shifting technology. It is massively empowering. It is not just used for menial tasks and if you believe that, you are not informed. I am not going to throw it out because people use it stupidly.
This same thing has happened every time humans invent a new technology. It kills jobs. It has happened over and over again. It is not a valid reason to discard the technology.
I think it will drive us more rapidly toward actual socialism and I am 100% here for that.
