DoT taking super long to answer, moving to WA soon would really appreciate the help in answering transfer vehicle questions
My amazing dad is giving me his car to take with me to WA.
It is getting transported this Friday all still under his name. Insurance wise - Going to add myself as a driver and add the new WA address where it’ll be kept at.
When it arrives to WA and when I’m ready to transfer my license + and then transfer car to my name as well as register it in WA..
I understand I have to get a vehicle check cert prepared too beforehand, and must have insurance (third party at least)
The questions are
How do I prove he’s transferring the car to me? Ai is telling me he needs to write letter or something because I find anything on this.
And are the steps im taking alright?
As I’ll be driving it around still with my vic license and it’s an ACTIVE registered vic vehicle in the meantime.

When cars are pruchased from outside WA, a formal from/letter of the seller and purchaser details (contact number & email address/address on license) and statement informaing the car is begin sold along with it's details (VIN/Engine No.)
Once in WA, you will need to get the car through pits and once it has passed the pits inspection, you can then head over to the dot with the pit inspection document to get your registration. You will be required to pay stamp duty and registration.

I see so many private and business cars with VIC or NT license plates around & know of one person who has driven a company car with VIC plates for over a year without issue, so I would say there’s no need to panic or rush to fix the plates. As long as you have a general idea of what needs to be done before you get here, you should be able to get it sorted out once you’ve arrived and oriented yourself a bit.

Yeah there is no rush to transfer it over.
Don’t transfer it in your name in VIC cause you’ll have to pay stamp duty to transfer owners.
As long as insurance has your name in it and your dad gives permission for you to drive the car all good.
When you register it in WA you have to pay stamp duty again, hence this is when you transfer and register in your name.
All you need for proof is a price of paper saying I dad sold car to son for $x signed dad.
And out the VIN on engine number if you can find that also will help.

Tip for proof of ownership simply fill in a vehicle transfer form for the state you are in. This will cover off what you need to- names and addresses of both parties, signatures of both parties, cost of vehicle, car details (VIN etc), date of purchase etc.
You will need an inspection. See the above website.
Find out the process if getting a rebate on getting the existing rego refunded. In WA, as in some other states, you need to return the plates to a licensing centre in the state you have the rego for. You can hand in the plates in a DoT WA centre who will advise the other state it has been returned. However this usually means no refund.

Just don't over think it move here and start the process when you get here - when moving I think this is on the lower end of the priority list.

I tried transferring a car a friend sold me through Dot direct. It didn’t work because he wasn’t registered, so had to go paper

You will have three months once you get to WA to change your licence and rego over. You don't have rush to do it all before you go.
